Have you noticed that when you feel stressed, you also experience digestive upset? This is a normal response, but some basic techniques can offer relief.
Here are three you can practise daily with minimum effort and no cost:
1) DIAPHRAGMATIC BREATHING
Most of us take shallow breaths most of the time, often due to stress. This is subconscious, but breathing can also be conscious, and practices such as diaphragmatic breathing can help support our gut.
2) EAT WITHIN A 12-HOUR WINDOW
The gut needs time at night to repair itself from the effort of digesting food during the day. If the gut does not have this downtime, gaps can develop in the gut wall; for efficient repair we need two things: a relatively empty gut and the growth hormone that is produced at night while we sleep.
3) TAKE A STROLL
Benefits can be achieved with just two to five minutes of walking after eating, as this supports digestive function by stimulating the stomach and intestines, helping food move through the digestive system, reducing bloating, and even helping gastrointestinal symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome.

We need your help!
Can you explain our stone circle?
When we moved into Heather Lodge the back garden was overgrown and we didn’t notice the large, circular, stone structure alongside the Strathwhillan Burn. It is some 30 feet across with a carefully constructed top of dressed sandstone and a depressed centre; word is that it had been quite deep, but was filled in decades ago.
The Heather Lodge, Banner Lodge, and Moss Cottage buildings were originally farm ‘offices’ associated with the Douglas Hotel, (built in the Victorian era) and elements of their architecture suggest that they may have included a stable or coach house, and staff accommodation.
Perhaps the circular structure had some agricultural use? It’s too big for a well and, given the quality of the stonework, it seems rather ‘luxury’ for grain or slurry storage. There was some heavy cast iron pipe work associated with it, and one theory put forward is that the Victorians were able to collect methane generated from farm slurry, possibly for use in gas lighting.
Do you know more though?
