"I was inspired by the efforts caterers are taking with their menus: reducing food emissions through meat reduction, offering tasting sessions for children and parents, and the sheer innovation involved in creating delicious, healthy meals that children love.
From Jackfruit Jambalayas to Spiced Chickpea Pilafs, school meals are simply not what they used to be - and thank goodness for that."
Our ambassador Chris Packham spoke to the Daily Mirror earlier this month about the exceptional work our catering partners are doing in creating healthy, climate-friendly school menus. π±
In his article, Chris discusses the importance of providing plant-based school meals for children and our planet, shining a light on the caterers at the forefront of the school food revolution. πͺ

Our ambassador Chris Packham spoke to The Mirror last weekend about the incredible strides school caterers are taking to create healthier, planet-friendly meals for children. π±
"As an ambassador for ProVeg UKβs School Plates programme, I have had the privilege of witnessing the transformations taking place in school cafeterias across the country. Gone are the days of uninspired, nutritionally deficient meals. Instead, there is a culinary revolution β all thanks to the inspirational efforts of the school caterers driving this change."
Chris talks all about our School Plates programme in the article, which you can read here: https://hubs.ly/Q02pLbt-0

Worried about getting all your calcium needs on a plant-based diet? π€ Weβve got you covered! πͺπΌπͺπΏ
Tip: Try to pair a high-calcium food with a high-vitamin D food to boost absorption. This could be as simple as adding mushrooms to your tofu stir-fry, or pairing your favourite fortified cereal with almond milk! π₯π₯£
With that in mind, here are five sources of plant-based calcium you can add to your diet:
π Tofu - boasting up to 400mg of calcium per 100g, calcium-set tofu will help you gain the maximum benefit
π Almond milk - containing around 120mg per 100ml, almond milk is the best non-dairy milk choice for boosting your calcium intake
π Leafy greens - kale, spinach, chard and cabbage are great sources of calcium, 100g of greens contains nearly 300 milligrams, about the same amount as a glass of cowβs milk
π White beans - A great option for plant-based meals, beans contain 62mg of calcium alongside a whole host of health-boosting properties
π Broccoli - An incredibly healthy addition to your diet, broccoli also boasts a modest 47mg of calcium per 100g
Which is your favourite plant-based source of calcium? Let us know β¬οΈ

Making kimchi...πΆπ§π§
π« π
Kimchi is a fantastic spicy ferment made with Chinese leaf cabbage, garlic, chilli, onion, ginger & apple (sometimes with other added veg too).
Fermented foods like kimchi contain good bacteria π¦ , so are fantastic for our gut health (& therefore our brain too π§ π)
I love kimchi as part of a salad bowl, but it can also add a kick to a stir fry.& other hot dishes, & I also love it with cheese π§ π
Sprouting broccoli seeds π
These nutrient packed little sprouts are a great source of fibre, vitamins & minerals, as well as containing glucoraphanin - when the sprouts are eaten an enzyme converts this inactive form to sulporophane, an active compound found in cruciferous veg. This helps with liver detoxification, may also reduce inflammation & improve the gut microbiome.
Broccoli sprouts contain 100 x more sulphuraphane than Broccoli π₯¦
Sprouts are easy to grow & can be added to salads, sandwiches, smoothies & stir-fries.
