Jankyn Smyth worshipped at St Mary's and was a generous Benefactor to the church as well as the town and it's people. Jankyn (he would be known as John in todays times) was responsible for the financing of a new sanctuary at the east end of the chancel, four bay arcades either side of the chancel and adding the North and South chapel chancel chapels all this was done between 1457 and 1470. Jankyn died on the 28 June 1481, he and his wife were buried at the east end of the north aisle of the nave at St Mary's Church.
Today we celebrated with a service at ST Mary's Church with a short play from Feoffment school and the message portrayed by the children through their play was, be kind and considerate to those who have less than you. The County High Chamber Choir sang "The Long Day Closes" and "Mother of God" Our Mayor Cllr. Diane Hind read the traditional list of benefactors, this years list included, Jankyn Smyth 1481, William Tassell 1556, Thomas Bright the elder 1587 and the younger 1626 and Poly Clopton 1730. We can see that Jankyn's good work continued long after his death

The Jankyn Smyth Cake and Ale Ceremony takes place on Thursday, for those of you who don't know what this is, here is a short history of the event.
Jankyn Smyth was a significant benefactor to the town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk; he left a bequest in his will for a Mass to be held each year on the anniversary of his death in 1481. This included money to provide cakes and ale – the charity still continues and residents of the almshouses founded by the trust receive money. It is believed to be the oldest endowed charity in the country still in existence. The special service is held by the Guildhall Feoffees at St Mary’s Church with musical contributions from local schools and with the cakes and ale to follow at the Guildhall, with a toast to Jankyn in special Guildhall Ale brewed by a local brewery (which mentions Jankyn on the label!). Many of the alms-houses residents attend, and later they’re treated to a slap-up lunch.
Below is a picture of Jankyn Smyth, a portrait of him hangs in the Guildhall.
If you have a beautiful picture, please email to [email protected]; and we can feature it on our page.
Thank you.
