Some vague themes for any new yogis this week!But what the heck is ‘Moon sequence’ and what does the summer solstice have to do with a yin yoga class? 🤷🏻♀️
The moon sequence is a series of poses we do every month when there happens to be a full moon that week. This reminds us of life’s cycles and how things come and go. The poses themselves are great for strength and flexibility. 🌕
In Yin yoga we have time to pause and reflect as we enjoy relaxing poses that last 3 to 5 minutes. This gives time for me to lead you in a guided meditation or simply give you something to think about whilst you’re relaxing. Tonight‘s theme of the summer solstice reflects the event that is occurring this week. Poses will be ones to really savour much like the tasty fruit and vege grown locally 🍓

This week our Hatha class is helping us to shake off the stress of the day. Yoga is very good at doing this normally but this week we’ll work with the breath a little more to calm our nervous system.
Yin tonight is a guided meditation as we take ourselves gently from pose to pose. Sound a bit weird? Just go with it 😅 Yin poses are sloooow. They are mostly floor based where the body is supported by props so you can relax 😌

Did you run a marathon this weekend? …No me neither 😅 But one of regulars did! An amazing achievement! 🥇👏
As such, yin yoga tonight will be full of postures to aid recovery for runners! It’s a favourite sequence for all though as generally everyone’s legs are achy from doing lots of exercise or from being glued to a desk chair all day. Yin tonight will stretch key muscles in the legs, hips and butt! Not only that but help release a little into those tricky connective tissues like the IT band (oof to get that massaged!😱😭)
My regulars, will know what’s coming tonight with Hatha- the moon sequence! We do it every time the week contains a full moon. A lovely series of postures to both strengthen and stretch. It also means we get to play with our half moon balance! 🙃🌛

It’s great at the time isn’t it but I always feel like I’ve got a ‘food hangover’. All that sugar causes inflammation in the body so it’s no surprise! In Hatha we’ll be focusing on shifting toxins, with active poses including twists, but also a lovely pose that we can relax into to ‘unclench’ our digestive system.
In Yin yoga we’ll be doing what we always do really - doing less - but with purpose! 😅 What does this mean?? In yin we let our bodies be supported by props and cushions so we can really relax in a pose for 3-5 minutes. Relaxing the muscles, unsticking the fascia, creating space in painful joints and calming our minds.

Do you know there’s lots of different types of yoga and lots of different type of people that teach it! It’s definitely something I’d always say shop around for to find your perfect fit! 🙏
What’s important is how it makes you feel both physically and mentally:
😌 You might be nervous going to your first class, but you should feel a sense of calm and accomplishment by the end
🦴 You should be able to follow your teacher even if that means taking alternative poses in the case of illness or injuries (please note: everyone feels a little lost in sun salutations at first 😅)
💪 You should notice some benefits! Whether that’s sleeping much better after class, or noticing that you’re getting stronger and more flexible

How I came to Yoga...
I first discovered Yoga back in 2013 as a weekly class that I wedged into my life as some kind of exercise that didn’t look too hard! I soon found that:
1. It was harder than it looked! But my teacher was both encouraging and supportive and that’s what made me come back to the mat every week. She also put up with me and my friend occasionally falling in to fits of giggles when we were trying a difficult pose.
2. I enjoyed not only the classes and postures themselves, but the sense of calm and peace it brought to me during and afterwards.
Unfortunately, a few short years later my Yoga teacher retired. I was without Yoga classes. Dark days! I couldn’t find another Yoga class that suited my schedule, but fortunately I found my sanctuary in dance fitness classes Clubbercise and Zumba. So much fun! Little did I know where they would lead me! Although dance fitness did wonders for my health, both physically and mentally, I still missed that sense of focus and grounding from the ‘moving meditation’ that is Yoga. In January 2019 I was dreading the days ahead confined to a desk in a stressful veterinary practice management job. I burnt out. I made the decision to quit and take some time out to discover what I really wanted to do. I knew I enjoyed the dance fitness classes. I also enjoyed Pilates classes for that connection and control in my body. However, it was a chance Yoga holiday in Portugal that reignited my love for Yoga and made me wonder if I could teach it. On returning back home I took out my mat again and practiced. I passed my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training at Yoga Hero in Leeds in November 2019.
