We were pleased to welcome two groups of medical students from China on their summer field trip to our Education & Conference Centre last month. Our Medical Director delivered an educational lecture on palliative and end-of-life care in the UK and this was then followed by a tour of the Hospice.

The students were very keen to learn about hospices and palliative care in the UK and we hope to host another group in the future!

This is just part of the education and training we do. For the full list of courses we provide at the Hospice, please head to our website at https://ow.ly/shSK50ThA8x

At our Hospice, making every moment count is at the heart of what we do. We’re always inspired by the compassionate gestures that bring joy to our patients and their families.

Recently, a devoted son arranged a heartwarming visit from a pair of donkeys for his mum at the Inpatient Unit. This touching surprise brought smiles and laughter to everyone—patients, visitors, and staff alike. The donkeys, kindly brought in by Mini Donks, created a memorable experience for the family, showcasing how we go above and beyond to honour each patient's unique wishes.

From animal visits to colourful flowers, our dedicated team constantly finds ways to make patients feel cherished and valued. Whether it's fulfilling a simple wish or organising a special visit, we’re committed to offering comfort and joy alongside medical care.

Everyone deserves the best possible care and support at the end of life.

On behalf of those responsible for shaping palliative and end-of-life care, NHS East of England and Marie Curie East England are conducting a survey to understand the experiences of those affected. Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is pleased to support this important initiative.

If you’re living with a terminal illness or supporting someone who is, you have the opportunity to share your opinions. Volunteers, health and social care professionals, and anyone bereaved in the last two years are also encouraged to participate. Your insights can help improve care for everyone at the end of life.

Take part in the survey and share your views today at bit.ly/eastofengland.

Son cycles across Britain in memory of his dad - Arthur Rank Hospice Charity 06/09/2024

“Dad would be proud of me.”

Starting tomorrow, September 7, we have another brave cyclist taking on an incredible challenge! Nick Mutch will embark on a remarkable journey, cycling nearly 1,000 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats in memory of his dad, Alan Mutch. Alan, a devoted engineer and lover of the Fens, received compassionate care at our Hospice during his final weeks, a care that Nick and his family deeply appreciated.

Over nine days, Nick will push his limits, covering about 110 miles each day. This challenge is not only a tribute to his dad but also a vital fundraising effort to support the Hospice that provided such care.

Have you ever wondered how Arthur Rank Hospice Charity started?

This International Charity Day, we’re reflecting on our journey that began in the 1970s with Dr. David Bratherton, a therapeutic radiologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Inspired by Dame Cicely Saunders, Dr. Bratherton recognized the need for a dedicated hospice in Cambridge—a place where patients in the final stages of terminal illness could receive the compassionate care they deserved.

From our beginnings at the historic Brookfields site in 1982 to our purpose-built facility at Shelford Bottom, the Alan Hudson Centre in Wisbech, and patients' homes in the community, we’ve been committed to making a difference for over 40 years.

"Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is a cause close to my heart. Their Hospice at Home service cared for my mum before she passed away and my dad was always really proud of the work I did there as a Trustee."

This September, Lee Maughan, CEO of Green & Purple and former trustee for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, will cycle 980 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats. He’s taking on this epic challenge in memory of his parents, Carol and Lee Maughan. Lee's mum received care from our Hospice at Home Team, and he’s dedicated this ride to honour both his parents.

Lee’s commitment to this challenge is driven by his desire to give back and support the end-of-life care provided by the Charity that meant so much to his family. Covering scenic routes over nine days, this journey is both a personal tribute and a fundraising effort to support our vital services.

We’re incredibly proud of the ‘Community Ambassadors Team of Soham’ (CATS) from Soham Village College, who were inspired to fundraise for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity after learning about our work.

These five remarkable students—Alex, Iris, Oliver, Ted, and Tom—channelled their creativity and passion into unique fundraising efforts, from cake sales and car washes to sponsored bike rides and community events. Together, they’ve raised over £260, demonstrating the powerful impact young people can have on their community.

Their dedication and spirit of giving are truly inspiring! Thank you, CATS, for your outstanding support and commitment to making a difference.

This will be such a fun challenge - we can't wait to see how the teams make a difference in the community and how the fundraising arrow will show the growth of the seed funds! 💚

Here’s our MD, Sharon Grocott, kicking off our Arthur Rank Hospice Charity's Money Multiplier Fundraising Campaign with a fundraising arrow!

The idea is simple but powerful: teams start with £50 and over three months, you use creativity and teamwork to grow that amount as much as possible, all in aid of the incredible work Arthur Rank Hospice does for our community.

Not only are we participants, we're also sponsors of this amazing campaign and our team at C4B Media is buzzing with ideas! We can’t wait to see how much we can raise.

You can do it too!... Who’s in? Link for more info: www.arhc.org.uk/fundraising/corporate-partners/ways-to-support/moneymultiplier/

We're on the hunt to find five more businesses to join Bidwells in taking part in our Money Multiplier Challenge.

Running from October to December 2024, the challenge gives participating businesses a £50 seed fund, courtesy of C4B Media, with the goal of multiplying that amount as much as possible through fun and innovative activities. Bidwells has already kicked off their efforts with plans for an after-work quiz, with more fundraising ideas on the way.

Bidwells team's commitment to Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is deeply personal: Two of their colleagues were compassionately cared for by the Hospice in recent years. The team has been an active supporter throughout the year, from volunteering in the Hospice garden to completing a team 30k walk, and now they’re ready to take on this new challenge.

We'd love to have ten teams take part, with a combined target of £5,000 to help provide care for people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or life-limiting condition. Plus, there’s a stunning glass trophy from Go Glass Design and free tickets to our 2024 events up for grabs!

"They have both been tested and pushed to the very limits of their comfort zone, and they have both done this, week after week, without complaining and always with a smile. It is so reassuring to see Nurses who genuinely care, and these two genuinely do care."

At the end of July, our Bistro was filled with emotion as District Nurse Sister Michaela Hill, Community Nursing Sister Gemma Powell, and Clinical Nurse Specialist Sarah Pake were honored with the prestigious Cavell Star Award. These awards recognize nurses who demonstrate exceptional care to patients, their families, and colleagues.

Michaela and Gemma were praised for their compassionate and professional care, especially supporting a patient with complex needs who wished to die at home. Sarah, who had nominated them, highlighted their dedication and ability to build trust. In a heartwarming twist, Sarah herself was also presented with a Cavell Star Award, acknowledging her outstanding support for both patients and colleagues.
