We're going to be busy welcoming new and returning students to the Bookshop over the coming weeks. If you're new to Cambridge do come in and say hello, we're a friendly lot. You're always welcome to use the bookshop as an information point, a quiet space, or as a sanctuary. Feel free to ask us anything, we've heard it all before and we don't believe there's any such thing as a silly question. We're here to help you even if you don't need to buy a book. Of course, we'd be delighted to sell you books for your course too and we offer a 20% discount to University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University students all year round, not just for Fresher's week.

A sad moment in the history of the building that is now home to our bookshop, but fascinating to see all of these pictures and to read such an excellent account

On this day in 1897, the University of Cambridge voted against awarding women the titles of their degrees. There were riotous celebrations by male undergraduates - shop windows were broken and a giant bonfire was lit in the Market Square.

There's just one week to go until we have the pleasure of hosting Andrew Stauffer to celebrate his rapturously received new book, Byron - a Life in Ten Letters, published to mark the bicentenary of the death of Byron.

The book explores Byron's life and work through some of his best, most resonant correspondence. Each chapter opens with Byron's own voice – as if we have opened a letter from the poet himself – followed by a vivid account of the emotions and experiences that missive touches. This gripping life traces the meteoric trajectory of a poet whose brilliance shook the world and whose legacy continues to shape art and culture to this day.

'Ingenious … this devilishly readable book brings Regency England and Napoleonic Europe to howling life and pulls its disgraceful but irresistible subject into dazzling focus.' - John Walsh, The Sunday Times

'Lively and well illustrated … Stauffer's compendium abounds in vital force … it is also chock-full of … downright depravity … [a] crowded and entertaining chronicle' - D. J. Taylor, The Wall Street Journal

'Stauffer's book is a splendid thing, colourful and busy with incident, but always thoughtful and astute in its judgments.' - John Banville, The Guardian

Don't miss out! Register now to reserve your place at this free event that is sure to be enlightening and entertaining in equal measure.

The Cambridge Festival got under way on Wednesday, and we'll be joining in next week with no fewer than three author events at the bookshop. Always entertaining
and often inspiring, Cambridge Festival events are a highlight of the calendar in .

On Monday 18 March, you can come along to hear Jeremey Burchardt in conversation about his book, Lifescapes. In this talk, he'll draw on three remarkable unpublished diaries to explore the vital role that landscape plays for many people as a source of wellbeing, emotional equilibrium and personal development.

Join Andrew Davison on Wednesday 20th March to learn about Astrobiology and Christian Doctrine. Andrew will tell the centuries-long story of the human quest to understand how life got going. He will explore the current state of scientific thinking: what Cambridge chemist John Sutherland has called at least “the end of the beginning” of the journey to understand how some of the matter on Earth – and perhaps elsewhere – has the remarkable quality of being alive.

Finally, on Thursday 21st March, we'll be exploring the gentle power of solitude with two renowned researchers, Netta Weinstein and Heather Hansen. In this interactive talk, they will help the audience envision serene spaces where you can find rest in Solitude.
