How did Panettone become one of the most famous Italian breads? 🥮
Its origin goes back to 1495. During the luxurious Christmas banquet given by the Duke of Milan, the dessert got burnt. A young cook, called Toni, came up with a rich brioche bread, filled with raisins and candied fruit. The Duke loved it, and so the tradition of ‘Pane di Toni’ was born. 🎄

Giovanni’s Caffè and Pizzeria, previously known as “Charlie’s Coffee Company”, is a business that has been operating for years and that is now owned by Giovanni.

Giovanni arrived in Cambridge in September 2015 to take an English course. He was only 19 years old and was very happy to have an experience abroad. On his third day in Cambridge, he stopped by to see an Italian friend who worked at Charlie's Coffee Company. That day, Charlie, the previous owner, met Giovanni and asked him if he knew how to make pizzas; Giovanni replied that he was eager to learn and so he did. From that day onwards he began to work for Charlie's, bettering himself every day in the production aspects and management of the shop. At the end of 2022 he took over the business, after Charlie decided to sell it to him.

From January 6, 2023, after the holiday season, Charlie's Coffee Company reopened with Giovanni as new owner.

Day after day, Giovanni still carries the same enthusiasm as when he first started which now, drove the desire to take the next step and lend the business his own name on the 17th of August 2023, adding an extra touch of Italian authenticity to the experience: Giovanni’s Caffè and Pizzeria.

Giovanni’s Caffè and Pizzeria will continue this beautiful adventure always looking for simplicity and genuineness, which are the typical characteristics of Sardinia, the land where Giovanni was born and lived until he decided to move from one island to another, advised by his parents to fly away and grow thanks to commitment and seriousness.

The story of Charlie’s

Charlie's Coffee Company is an independent family owned cafe located on Burleigh street, Cambridge. We serve pizza, a wide selection of cakes and homemade scones as well as Illy Coffee. We also offer a rotating selection of craft beer and wines. Open since November 2014, it's our mission to offer great food of the highest quality and excellent service in a cozy, friendly space. We look forward to sharing our love of pizza and coffee with you.
