Did you know you can build your own sampled instruments in Studio One? Presence XT has an Editor with the power to let you build multi-sampled, multi‑velocity, multi‑articulation, scriptable instruments. You may not have encountered it before because it’s not included by default; you must buy it as an add‑on. However, as many people now receive their PreSonus software products through the Studio One+ subscription, you might find that you already own it.
Visit www.sosm.ag/PresenceXT to find out how you can build a simple sampled synth.

Improve your studio by adding a magnificent 1073SPX-D channel strip from worth £2754!
The SPX-D maintains everything that was special about the original 1073 input module: its two-stage transistor preamp, Marinair input and output transformers, the iconic inductor-based EQ section, and of course that Neve sound. But to those essential features it adds a convenient front-panel Direct Injection [DI] input, a balanced insert Send/Return, and a high-quality USB audio interface — making it easier than ever to achieve the legendary Neve sound in your DAW.
The 1073SPX-D additionally includes a flexible analogue monitor control section and headphone output, which allows for latency-free foldback listening and even monitoring of external stereo sources.
Visit www.sosm.ag/neve-comp-0724 by midnight on the 2nd August 2024 to enter!
Good Luck!

In the August 2016 we look at what exactly a compressor’s Ratio setting does and if people say to use a low ratio for light compression and higher ratio for harder compression, but you are achieving roughly the same average level of gain reduction, what’s the difference?

Very occasionally, a manufacturer decides to throw everything it knows into the creation of a flagship synthesizer and this is what the design team at Arturia have clearly done with the PolyBrute12, which has gained six voices and a lot more besides. All of which has resulted in a flagship analogue polysynth that will take time and effort to master fully, but once done so you’ll discover sounds and ways of expressing them that cannot be obtained on any other instrument.

Boutique Aussie brand BeesNeez Pro Audio - Australian Made Microphones and Capsules impress with their versatile valve pencil mic the Lulu Tube which is an evolution of the solid‑state Lulu FET, which was their tribute to the classic Neumann KM84. BeesNeez say that the inspiration for the Lulu Tube is the coveted (and expensive!) Neumann KM54, but as the capsule doesn’t have that mic’s distinctive nickel diaphragm, it is perhaps closer in spirit to the KM64 — the valve precursor to the KM84.

Turn the ratio up, and a compressor becomes a limiter. Go even further and you enter the world of reverse dynamics — and unique sonic effects. In the November 2023 edition we explain how negative compression ratios work and how it really comes into its own as a means of enhancing the sustain of live snare‑drum recordings directly

Cubase now offers a number of stock compressors, including two new choices added in v13: Vox Comp (for Pro and Artist users) and Black Valve (Pro only). So how do you decide which of these compressors to use on your vocals? In the July 2024 edition our reviewer John Walden grabbed a suitable vocal track and put the two ‘new for v13’ offerings up against the long‑standing standard Compressor plug‑in, to see if he could identify the role that each might play in achieving these typical compression aims.

Most recording techniques are easy enough to put into practice when you're only faced with the task of working with one instrument or voice at a time, but life gets more complicated when you come to record a rock band playing 'live' in the studio. Even when you are encountering a unique set of challenges, it is still possible to achieve a good result.
