“Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an approach that seeks to mitigate the loss of habitat and biodiversity as an outcome of development. According to Simkin et al. (2022), a burgeoning global human population and its associated urban expansion will be a leading cause of global habitat loss over the next 30 years, predominantly in the Global South. However, this problem is not confided to far-away places as centuries of farming, building and industry have made England one of the most nature-depleted countries in Europe. Within this context, BNG is an important new tool to help reverse this trend through the lens of planning and development.
(…)
My presentation explores how Biodiversity Net Gain will work in England, examined through the lens of our experiences getting ready for the arrival of the new legislation in Greater Cambridge. I will present and discuss the opportunities and challenges that this new legislation affords to placemaking and to protecting and restoring biodiversity and present some early examples from Greater Cambridge Shared Planning.”— John Cornell

Plain text:

Ina Bi

Why am I running for this?
As a member of both CUGS and the geography department staff-student committee, I enjoy the events and the ambiance of the society and the department. As someone who has benefited from various CUGS talks and events, I would also like to be able to innovate in terms of events, talks, and promotion and contribute to decolonisation, net-zero goal, and equality. As a geographer, I would also use this platform to better promote our department and society, and cooperate with others while introducing us to a wider audience.

What I can do?
• Back in high school, was president of four societies and the main organizer of two 400+ people events, which makes me quite experienced at setting tasks, managing teams, negotiating, and organizing events.
• As a geographer and an active member of the staff-student committee, I am quite familiar with the system and how to raise and try to solve problems.
• I am interested in not only geography but also many fields, and that makes me able to bring many new aspects and innovations to society.
• Being a journalist and art lover both in college and in high school, involved in media, set designs, art, and filmmaking, I am able to make good promotion of our society and department.

My proposals!
• I would like to make a new promotion video of our department, answering many questions that I would love to know before coming here, and let other people know more about us, especially about the Scott polar institute, which the last video did not mention a lot about.
• I will collaborate more with other societies and departments, and invite scholars who are not only geographers but also from interdisciplinary fields related to geography.
• Comments should be regularly collected, especially on decolonisation and equality, and efforts should be made to improve them in a timely manner.
• As well as big events like the Christmas formal, I will try to organise more of the usual forums, smaller events, and regular meet-ups.
