Cambridge Folk Festival 26/07/2024 Day 2 at the Cambridge Folk Festival with Alex, Linda and Julian.

31/07/2024

I first played Cambridge Folk Festival 55 years ago. It’s an absolute joy to see it continue in all its diversity, with early audiences still returning, often with children and grandchildren.

Festivals are the lifeblood of our music scene and many are bidding sad farewells this year. I’m lucky enough to be visiting The Sidmouth Folk Festival and will be enjoying Fairport's Cropredy Convention Official page too. But these festivals need our support if the wonderful young musicians starting their careers are to enjoy the same opportunities that us old guard did!

It’s a big investment for many, but we plant acorns so others can sit in the shade of great oak trees. Music is part of our sometimes hard-to-define cultural identity and the chance to see what our younger artists are thinking, feeling and playing, alongside our older favourites helps bind our generations when there are few other opportunities to do so.

Hope to see you all Somewhere Down the Road at a festival this summer!

Flower Garden Songwriting Workshops

Are you struggling to make your song feel ‘complete’?
Not sure why established writers’ work sounds so professional?
Ready to connect with your audience - if only you knew how?

Freshen up your songwriting! Join The Bridge in the Flower Garden for a second year of informal workshops on songwriting skills.

Friday 11am-12.30: Song clinic. Got work in progress that you need help to finish? Bring along an unfinished piece to get tips from fellow writers.

Saturday 11.45am- 13.30: The finished article. Meet festival performers Annie Dressner, Ernest Aines, and Lorraine Nash as they discuss why their songs work.

Sunday 10am-11.30: It’s not just the song - it’s how you put it across. Share performance skills to help your song stand out.

The Bridge is an umbrella organisation that makes connections between local music providers and performers. Set up in 2017, they have enabled over twenty artists to appear at the festival for the first time. Today, they focus on their members’ considerable experience to bring out the best work from aspiring and established songwriters alike.

Sangjaru are coming to Cambridge Folk Festival!

The name "Sangjaru" originates from the combination of two Korean words, "sangja" (box) and "jaru" (sack). While a box retains a fixed form, a sack adapts to its contents. Inspired by this analogy, the band aspires to infuse new creativity into the rich traditions of Korean music.

See them perform on Stage 2 on Saturday and come to their workshop on Stage 3 Sunday morning!
