So I can finally put on my CV that I'm an S&C coach for a Paralympian 😊

Gotta love my Tuesday morning S&C crew 😁

The beginning of another chapter 😊 &C

10 weeks ago Tom came to me looking for a PT, citing that he wanted to get fit again but that he had issues with back and hip pain. During his first session he managed to squat 70kg for 1 and said that his back couldn't take any more.

Fast forward 9 sessions and here he is squatting 110kg for 5 reps on his 4th working set, having had no hip or back issues for at least a month. Tom is a prime example of what you can achieve with a strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to your goals.

If you are suffering, whether it's age or injury related, never hesitate to ask for help! 😊

Was great to have a busy cycle class this morning. Loads of regulars and only a couple of bikes to spare. Everyone worked really well and put in loads of effort, it was great to see and I can't wait to push everyone again in the next class 😊

Time for a relaxing New Year's day walk with the cherub and the better half... cherub clearly found the new carrier comfortable as she was snoozing before we left the house 🤣🤣

Another great session in the books today with Anjuli. Considering when I first met here 8 weeks ago she could barely walk following her Meniscus surgery, here she is confidently cranking out squats on a Bosu ball at the end of a session that included Barbell Squats and Incline Leg Press. When I say this girl is a savage, I mean it! 😁

Don't suffer in silence with your aches and pain guys, even the strongest people need help. Don't be afraid to ask, you never know how good the outcome may be! 😊

Also, perks of having had a lot of knee troubles in my past, I know how to heal this sort of thing 😋

Overhead Squat

A great squat variation is you're finding yourself out of the groove. The overhead squat helps the individual to find their natural squatting posture and position, and to learn how to keep themselves upright as they go deeper into the squat, and for this reason it is often used as a beginner movement or a regression. With that being said, there is always merit in visiting the overhead squat, whether its as a warm up or to reaffirm your squatting positions and abilities.

Along with being great at resetting your squat, the overhead squat also helps improve your core, truck, shoulder, and hip flexor strength, stability, mobility, and flexibility, which in turn give you a stronger squatting posture.

When overhead squatting, the lighter weight you start with the better. Get used to the movement before progressing weight, and always ensure the weight stays over the midline of the body to ensure maximum benefit.

Bar Rolling

Is that it's proper name? Don't know, doesn't matter. What does matter is that it kicks ass for strengthening your forearms and your grip. By rolling the bar in your hands, one way and then the other, now only are your hands having to maintain their grip, but you're also working the flexors in both sides of your arms, helping to build and strengthen them.

So if like me you suffer with weak wrists and RSI, this is an exercise that takes a short amount of time and should definitely be in your workout plan either as a warm up or finisher! 😊

Cable Face Pull with External Rotation

A variation of the classic Face Pull, by adding the external rotation you work the Scapula muscles in the upper back, along with the muscles of the Rotator Cuff. The result? Shoulder health and stability, with some upper back strength.

So if you're like me and have had injuries and surgeries on your shoulders in the past, why not give this exercise a go for a few weeks and see for yourself the health benefits it can give you?

My first heavy squat session in 2 months. Although it ended in a swing and a miss, it was very productive and has given me insight into what I need to work on.

The failed rep is at 200kg, working up to that is was 160 for 1, 170 for 1, 180 for 2, and 190 for 2, all at a body weight of 102kg.

Lots to work on from this session, onwards and upwards we go!! 😊

Working with my partner Emma last week, who also happens to be 30 weeks pregnant.

A lot of people tend to be over cautious when they become pregnant and stop almost all exercise, however this can sometimes be just as harmful. As long as the exercise is done in a careful and controlled manner there really isn't anything to be afraid of.

Emma has always been fit and active, and it gets to her when she can't be on the go all the time, so we worked through a few simple exercises at a light weight so that she could feel her muscles again and also distress a little.

Ladies, don't be scared to workout through your pregnancy, just be careful and diligent about it. If you need help and advice feel free to send me a message or an email, I'm always more than happy to help! 😊

Ok, so this one is more of a "life hack", than a "fitness hack".

It doesn't matter how experienced you are in an environment, everyone has off days. Whether you're a professional in a certain field, a coach or educator, doing something you enjoy, or just living your daily life, everyone has off days, and that's OK, because what's more human than having an off day?

Advice I wish I knew when I was younger is to have a selectively short memory in these situations. Acknowledge the situation for what it is, learn what you can from it, adapt for the future to try and prevent it happening again, and then move on as you still have the rest of the day to make up for it. And remember, keep that chin up, you're stronger and more amazing than you realise! 😊

A wonder of the modern world: one day you can be hiking and exploring in the Scottish Highlands, then the next you can be instructing a spin class 600 miles away.

Your subconscious is always listening, just like a child sat at the side of a room while the adults talk, so be mindful of what you think and say as those thoughts and words will breed internal positivity or negativity.

This is a saying that I read a long time ago, but one that rings true just as much today as it did way back when, especially when training. When things get tough, this saying pops into my mind and reminds me to keep calm while working my ass off to be the best me I can possibly be.
