Museum & Library

It was a great honour to see some of our Museum volunteers today receiving recognition for their commitment and contributions to volunteering in Canterbury at the Museum.

They were presented by the Sheriff of Canterbury, Cllr Keji Moses. Other volunteers also received their certificates such as Canterbury Christchurch University, Canterbury & District Early Days project etc.

It was humbling to see all the volunteers present and to hear their stories.

Pʀᴇsᴇɴᴛᴀᴛɪᴏɴ ᴏꜰ ʀᴇɢᴀʟɪᴀ ᴏꜰ RW Bʀᴏ. Rᴀʏᴍᴏɴᴅ Hᴏʀɴ

On 25 March, W. Bro. Ian Dent, the Worshipful Master of Honor Oak Lodge No. 1986, together with Mrs. Ellen Horn, some brethren of the lodge and their ladies visited the Kent Museum of Freemasonry – bringing with them the beautifully framed set of regalia of the late RW Bro. Raymond Horn.
There, Richard White, a Trustee and the Secretary of the Kent Masonic Museum and Library Trust, was pleased to receive the regalia from Mrs. Horn. The regalia will be on permanent loan to the Museum for the lifetimes of Mrs. Horn and her daughter.

Richard thanked Mrs. Horn on behalf of all the Trustees for entrusting the Museum with the regalia of her late husband. He also thanked the Worshipful Master and brethren of Honor Oak Lodge for wishing to see the regalia offered to the Museum, and for all the hard work in making the day a great success.

RW Bro. Ray Horn had been a Past Assistant Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Spain. This is the highest office ever achieved by an English Freemason in the Spanish Constitution.

He was initiated into Grove Park Kent Lodge No. 2824 in 1968, becoming Worshipful Master in 1974. He was exalted into Priory Chapter No. 5819 in 1978. Later in 1991 he was awarded Senior London Grand Rank in the Craft.

It is in Spain, however, that his masonic career took off after he retired there in 1993. In 1989 he was a founder of Javea Lodge No. 40, warranted by the Grand Lodge of Spain, becoming Worshipful Master in 2005. He later joined Puerto De Xabia Lodge No. 58 and was appointed Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies. In 2001 he was made a Provincial Assistant Grand Master, and in 2008 he was promoted to Past Assistant Grand Master. RW Bro. Ray was also heavily involved in other masonic orders in Spain, including the Mark Master Masons, the Royal Ark Mariners, the Knights Templar, the Order of the Secret Monitor and the Allied Masonic Degrees.

Vɪsɪᴛ ʙʏ ᴛʜᴇ Lᴏʀᴅ Mᴀʏᴏʀ ᴏꜰ Cᴀɴᴛᴇʀʙᴜʀʏ ᴏɴ 27 Mᴀʀᴄʜ 2023

This year the Kent Masonic Museum and Library Trust, more commonly known as the Kent Museum of Freemasonry, is celebrating its 90th anniversary. It was opened on 19th April 1933 by the then Provincial Grand Master for Kent, RW Bro. the Rt Hon. the Lord Cornwallis. While the Province of Kent was subsequently split into East Kent and West Kent, the Musuem and Library remains as such for the whole of Kent.

In recognition of its 90th birthday the Trustees invited the Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Cllr Anne Dekker, and her Consort, her husband Mr. Ken Dekker, to visit the Museum and Library. Many thanks must go here to Peter Hazlewood, one of our Trustees, who was instrumental in organising the visit.

The Lord Mayor was pleased to accept our invitation, and toured the Museum and Library on Monday 27th March, accompanied by her Consort. She was received by W. Bro. Richard Wingett, Chairman of the Trustees, who introduced her to Neil Hamilton, Provincial Grand Master for East Kent, and Ian Gallehawk, Deputy Provincial Grand Master of West Kent.

After her initial welcome, she was taken on a tour of first the museum and then the library by Marcus Sherwood-Jenkins.
In the museum, the Lord Mayor was shown in particular our collection of historic books: a 1723 Anderson Book of Constitutions, a 1588 Geneva Bible and a 1613 King James Bible.
In the Library, the Lord Mayor was shown several ancient books of interest, and also shown our oldest exhibit: an ancient Egyptian Maul believed to be up to 4,000 years old.
(The authenticity of the maul has been verified by the British Museum).

At the conclusion of the tour, on behalf of the Museum and of both Provinces, the RW Provincial Grand Master presented the Lord Mayor with a donation to the Lord Mayor’s Charity and a small masonic trowel as a memento of the visit. The Lord Mayor spoke, thanking all for a very interesting tour of the Museum and Library, and remarking up on the connection Kent Freemasonry has had with the local community.

Afterwards the Lord Mayor and her Consort were shown around the main Lodge Room in the adjacent Canterbury Masonic Hall, where she was invited to sit in the Master's Chair. She was joined by her Consort, and both the Provincial Grand Master and Deputy Provincial Grand Master.
The visit was concluded with a small buffet in the centre with a good amount of convivial conversation, before the Lord Mayor’s party departed.
