The word "Pranayama" comes from two Sanskrit words: "prana," meaning life force or vital energy, and "ayama," meaning control or extension. ✨ Therefore, Pranayama is often translated as the control or extension of the life force.
("Deep Breathing Exercises" term is being used recently, not sure if they follow the traditional yogic techniques)
Pranayama involves various techniques of regulating the breath, including altering its pace, depth, and rhythm. Regular practice is believed to improve physical health, reduce stress, enhance mental clarity, and promote emotional balance. It can even help with conditions like anxiety, depression, and respiratory issues. 🌿🧘♀️
In traditional yogic philosophy, Pranayama is a vital practice for controlling the flow of prana in the body, essential for achieving higher states of consciousness and spiritual awakening. 🌟
Pranayama is a profound practice that enhances the connection between the body, mind, and breath, promoting holistic well-being and deeper awareness. Although some techniques are occasionally taught in regular yoga classes, pranayama truly deserves more attention.
If you're interested in learning Pranayama techniques in depth and experiencing their deeper effects in your daily life and Yoga practice, please get in touch. We would love to include a Pranayama-only class in our timetable, as Ezgi loves practising and teaching them. 🧘♂️✨
Which Pranayama technique is your favourite?
Or have you ever tried any of them? 🙏💫

🤓 Some of the props at the Shala are handmade by Ezgi in her home workshop and their dimensions and materials are specifically arranged to enhance your experience.
🤗 Our bolsters are filled with organic buckwheat hulls and have already received loads of praise from our students.
Did you know that you can order these handmade props from our website if you wish to have them for your home practice?
📝 You can even personalise your print design and colour, although we would love for you to have our studio logo😬😍 (check out the 3rd image for our latest custom order print)

✨ Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a set sequence of asanas practised in a particular order. The primary series, known as Yoga Chikitsa, detoxifies and aligns the body. It begins with Sun Salutations A and B, as a beginner you learn these first. When you feel comfortable with your breathing and begin to memorise the transitions more poses are added step by step.
Each movement in Ashtanga Yoga is coordinated with breath to create a flowing and meditative practice.
There are some specific elements in Ashtanga Yoga that help practitioners withdraw their awareness inward and reach this flowing and meditative state;
- Vinyasa (synchronisation of breath with movement)
- Breathing with sound
- Drishti (gazing point)
- Bandha (controlling the internal energy locks)
Although this method is known as one of the most dynamic and vigorous styles of Yoga, it is possible to adjust the asanas according to the student’s needs and abilities.
The classical way of learning and practising the Ashtanga method is called Mysore (self-practice). Here are the classes we offer at Yoga Shala Canterbury to help you start or deepen your journey. If you are curious about this method try Mysore class or Guided Ashtanga Yoga classes.
👉🏽 Mysore ( assisted self-practice): Students practise at their own pace under the guidance of a teacher. You may see beginners and more experienced students practising side by side. Suitable for all abilities.
Tue 7 am
Wedn 5:30 pm
👉🏽 Led Ashtanga Yoga: Everyone practices together according to the teacher's count. perfect opportunity to share the group energy.
Not suitable for beginners.
Mon 5:45 pm (monthly, check the booking page)
👉🏽 Guided Ashtanga Yoga: This is more like a hybrid version to make the Led class suitable for beginners.
We mostly focus on Sun Salutations A & B, standing poses, and closing poses.
Suitable for all, helps beginners to memorise the sequence and transitions also great for more experienced practitioners if they want to deepen their understanding of standing poses or looking to add another practice day.

🤸🏽♀️"Asana" is a Sanskrit term commonly used to refer to a physical posture or pose.
In yoga, asanas are often practised to attain physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual growth. Each asana has specific benefits for the body and mind. We often link the asanas through breath.
✨
In Raja Yoga (one of the classical Yoga systems outlined by the great sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras), "asana" refers to physical postures and the state of being seated in a steady and comfortable position for meditation. Asanas in Raja Yoga prepare the body and mind for long periods of seated meditation, allowing practitioners to achieve deeper concentration and inner awareness.🧘

Hello everyone,
Here is a quick guide how to find our studio in the building.
If you have any questions feel free to get in touch.
Ezgi, YSC
✨ The literal Sanskrit translation of the word Hatha is " force" or " stubborn". Hatha Yoga may be explained as the stubborn practice of yoga without interruptions of the mind and the five senses.
~
Some teachers also explain Hatha as Ha(sun) + Tha(moon) as Hatha Yoga aims to purify the solar and lunar channels in the body. ☀️ 🌚
~
However, the term "Hatha Yoga" has become an umbrella term in our everyday Yoga life. It covers most of the classes we are likely to see around.
If you attend a yoga class that's particularly called "Hatha Yoga" here are a few things you can expect to experience depending on your teacher's approach; (of course not altogether in one class😬)
* In-depth explanation of asanas (yoga poses)
* Having the time to modify asanas according to your needs
* Pranayama (Deep Breathing Exercises)
* Meditation
* Mantra chanting
* Bandha & Mudra practice
* Accessible Pace
* Holding the asanas for a little longer than flow classes
✨
You'll see a few Hatha Yoga class in our timetable. If you like weekend practice, feel free to join Ezgi on Sunday at 9am (75mins).

Andrea and Ezgi are coming together to offer you an evening full of relaxation and self-reflection.
🪷
At the beginning of the evening, you'll be introduced to a simple breathing exercise to arrive and settle. Then Ezgi will take you through a group of gentle restorative postures to prepare you for the soundbath.
Andrea will guide a magical Sound Bath journey weaving together crystal singing bowls, vocals and percussion instruments. Her unique, Crystal Singing Bowl and Voice sound bath sessions offer the opportunity for self-enquiry and deep rest.
Andrea plays a set of 7 Crystal Singing Bowls and specialises in playing clear and alchemy crystal singing bowls due to their clearer tone and overtones.
Sound healing is the application of sound through the voice and instruments to balance mind, body and spirit. Some people feel a sense of deep relaxation.
It is recommended that you do not consume any alcohol up to 24 hours before the session.
The session will last for 60 minutes and will begin with a brief introduction to sound healing and what to expect. Next there will be an opening meditation and Andrea will lead you into a relaxed space, to allow yourself to be immersed in the sounds.
Towards the end of the session there will be approximately 5 minutes of silence during which the healing can take place. Andrea will then gently bring you out of the session using her voice, grounding you and bringing you back to full conscious awareness feeling relaxed and refreshed.
The sessions will require participants to simply relax and receive the sounds played, which can have a calming effect on the mind and body.

"Meet our teachers" series continues with Ezgi. 🪷
~
"Ezgi’s Yoga journey started in 2010. She completed her first teacher training with the British Wheel of Yoga in 2017 and has been teaching since then.
In 2020 she travelled to India for further training and completed a 200-hrs Ashtanga Yoga Programme.
Ezgi currently teaches Ashtanga Yoga and Hatha Yoga.
Her Ashtanga Yoga approach has evolved over the years and mainly focuses on making this method accessible to everybody. She finds the meditative character of the set sequence safe, calming and grounding. Her motivation is to introduce this method to as many people as possible and help them experience these qualities in their Yoga journeys too.
In a Mysore Ashtanga class, Ezgi will support you when learning the sequence and introduce some modifications according to your needs.
She also enjoys teaching Pranayama and Meditation-focused classes and workshops.
