…Because they help stop you from falling.

The main function of our toes is to provide balance and support when walking or running as well as helping our feet bear the weight of the body.

When we walk, our toes stay on the ground 75% of the time and during that time they are exerting pressure to help us walk correctly. If your toes are weak, they will not be as effective in supporting your body which could result in balance and posture issues.

This is the reason the Hexology method has a pillar dedicated to feet and balance which will ultimately strengthen your feet to allow them to function correctly and be able to support the structure (your body) that sits on top.

As well as the dedicated ‘Balance’ area in the studio we also have an online video library that will give you specific exercises that can be performed at home.

If you would like more information about this and all the Hexology pillars visit www.canterburypilates.co.uk/hexology

A nice mention in the book review for Understanding The Human Foot.
All I can say is never stop learning from the clients that you see in front of you and never stop learning from them.

Lovely write up from the Podiatry Review magazine regarding my chapter in ‘Understanding The Human Foot’ by James Earls. It’s true that with 22 years of human movement experience there’s still so much more to learn. Never stop seeking new brain journeys.

Pilates is a whole-body exercise that has a huge number of benefits. These range from increasing your core strength, improving your posture and balance, preventing injury, decreasing back pain to increasing your energy, boosting your immune system and mood and improving flexibility and mobility.

The wonderful thing about Pilates is it is suitable for everyone and, practised regularly, can have a very positive effect on your health and quality of life. In the Pilates Hexology pillar we will design a program for you that will combine dynamic strength and stability, along with flexibility.

Unfortunately, bone mineral density declines with age - particularly for post-menopausal women - which is why it is such an important pillar within the Hexology method.

Bones respond to impact and load to constantly repair and regenerate, and moderate impact weight bearing exercise is more effective than low impact for maintaining improvements in bone mineral density (think low jumps, skipping, hopping, jogging and stamping). Also, people who have Osteoporosis or Osteopenia should actually be encouraged to do more rather than less.

The Hexology ‘osteo’ workout will promote bone strength through impact and load in a guided and safe manner. We also create bespoke programmes for clients who already have Osteoporosis to address their strengths and weaknesses.

Ageing is usually something we don’t tend to think about until we start to notice changes in our body, such as muscle and skin tone and maybe memory.

Like the sun rising and setting every day, ageing is something that cannot be stopped but what we are in control of is how we approach it. We can accept its inevitability and as a place we are going to end up anyway or we can take control, stand up to it, and do everything we can to create strong and adaptable bodies.

The Hexology method is a fully integrated exercise and wellness system which is committed to helping clients unlock their future fitness and value their long-term health.
