This International Women in Maths Day we continue to celebrate our incredible colleagues with Dr Nneka Umeorah, a Lecturer in Financial Mathematics. Nneka explains her love for maths:

“Many people perceive mathematics as a complex and challenging subject, but this is a fallacy. I love mathematics because of its diverse nature and the opportunities it opens up. Maths is not all about numbers, equations, computations or algorithms; it encompasses understanding, is highly relevant in critical thinking, and facilitates solving real-world problems.”

Y Diwrnod Rhyngwladol Menywod mewn Mathemateg hwn rydym yn parhau i ddathlu ein cydweithwyr anhygoel gyda Dr Nneka Umerah, Darlithydd mewn Mathemateg Ariannol. Mae Nneka yn esbonio ei chariad at fathemateg:

“Mae llawer o bobl yn gweld mathemateg fel pwnc cymhleth a heriol, ond camsyniad yw hwn. Rwyf wrth fy modd â mathemateg oherwydd ei natur amrywiol a'r cyfleoedd y mae'n eu hagor. Nid yw mathemateg yn ymwneud â rhifau, hafaliadau, cyfrifiannau neu algorithmau yn unig; mae’n cwmpasu dealltwriaeth, yn hynod berthnasol o ran meddwl yn feirniadol, ac yn hwyluso datrys problemau’r byd go iawn.”

Dr Kirstin Strokorb, Senior Lecturer, has been working at Cardiff University for six years. She explains why she enjoys working in mathematics:

“I love that there are so many ways to `do mathematics’. Each way has a different emphasis on creativity, intuition, rigour, exchanging with other disciplines and partners, students and colleagues. It is great that our new Abacws building in Cardiff with its many collaboration spaces is especially well suited for that.”

Mae Dr Kirstin Strokorb, Uwch Ddarlithydd wedi bod yn gweithio ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd ers chwe blynedd. Mae’n egluro pam ei bod yn mwynhau gweithio mewn mathemateg:

“Rwyf wrth fy modd bod cymaint o ffyrdd o ‘wneud mathemateg’. Mae gan bob ffordd bwyslais gwahanol ar greadigrwydd, greddf, trylwyredd, cyfnewid â disgyblaethau a phartneriaid eraill, myfyrwyr a chydweithwyr. Mae’n wych bod ein hadeilad Abacws newydd yng Nghaerdydd gyda’i fannau cydweithio niferus yn arbennig o addas ar gyfer hynny.”

On International Women in Maths Day we are celebrating Dr Angela Mihai who, as our Director of Research, plays an integral role in supporting our colleagues as they undertake internationally impactful research 👏

Angela explains why she enjoys working within Maths:

“Mathematics has been my constant companion since I discovered the joy of solving mathematical problems in school. That came as a surprise, but it also gives me pleasure to think about a problem, sometimes for a long time, and find new approaches or ask further questions along the way. The trick is not to worry about where it is all going, but rather trust that if you do your best and enjoy it, then good things will come.”

Ar Ddiwrnod Rhyngwladol Menywod mewn Mathemateg rydym yn dathlu Dr Angela Mihai sydd, fel ein Cyfarwyddwr Ymchwil, yn chwarae rhan annatod wrth gefnogi ein cydweithwyr wrth iddynt ymgymryd ag ymchwil sy'n cael effaith ryngwladol 👏

Esboniodd Angela pam ei bod yn mwynhau gweithio o fewn Mathemateg:

“Mae mathemateg wedi bod yn gydymaith cyson i mi ers i mi ddarganfod y llawenydd o ddatrys problemau mathemategol yn yr ysgol. Daeth hynny fel syndod, ond mae hefyd yn rhoi pleser i mi feddwl am broblem, weithiau am amser hir, a dod o hyd i ddulliau newydd neu ofyn cwestiynau pellach ar hyd y ffordd. Y tric yw peidio â phoeni am ble mae’r cyfan yn mynd, ond yn hytrach ymddiried, os gwnewch eich gorau a’i fwynhau, y daw pethau da.”
