Bikini de carrillada - on today.
Riff on one of our book dishes, where the story of how the ‘bikini’ was created in Catalonia under Franco rule.

This version, is sherried ox cheek & truffled manchego curado, sourdough, lashings of olive oil, cooked on the plancha.

Sharing her wonderful wines from Malaga that we love so much, with 6 seasonal courses, to a great full house on a Friday lunchtime.

A very special fino Friday today on Westgate St.

Carabiñero prawn a la plancha!
Carabiñero sauce, marcona almond crema.

The prawn alone would normally go for around £25 elsewhere in good U.K. restaurants.
We used to sell from the grill in for £15, but couldn’t make it work even at that great price.

Today in cardiff you can indulge in a true delicacy, for a tenner.

Ración in Westgate Street this week.
A classic braise using the only MSC certified octopus available in the U.K, courtesy of Spain of course.

Day boat caught octopus off the coast of Asturias, by fisherman who have been catching the same octopus for generations.
They have now developed new ways to release smaller octopus and bycatch.
It’s then frozen on board immediately, a tenderising process, before cleaning or washing any flavour away.

It’s as sustainable as it gets, and the flavour is specifically unique due to the waters and the cuttlefish rich diet of the octopus.

We’ve given it the traditional ‘3 dip’ treatment into the water & cooking then cooling using the toothpick test.

Enjoy in the middle of the table to share this week with potatoes slow cooked with aromatics in the same liquor, caper berries, green olive oil, sea salt & smoked paprika.

A dish we used to do a lot. Seems apt this week

We had the fortune to visit the winery in 2023 and have been listing their globally critically acclaimed wines since then in Bar 44, and for many years before that in Asador 44.
This is a rare chance to welcome Clara to penarth and enjoy her wines first hand, hear all about them, and enjoy with perfectly paired dishes.

We were devasted to learn that our lovely colleague and friend Steve Abbott tragically passed away last month. Steve worked with our family and the 44 group for over 20 years. He was part of the Farthings and Cowbridge 44 team in the early days, more recently he worked as part of the team in Parador. Over recent weeks many customers and colleagues old and new have been in touch with their best wishes and so many stories about Steve.

The theme that shone through from everyone was how amazing he was, so kind, so much fun, hard working and loyal. We will also remember him for his brogues, blazers and waistcoats which he wore with such pride - always the best turned out at our Christmas parties!

As one of our team said to sum it up - 44 have lost a legend.

Many of you have been asking for the arrangements for Steve’s funeral, they are as follows:

Tuesday 16th April at 1.30 pm (ammended, orininally stated 1.45 pm) at Margam Crematorium, followed by a wake at Grove Golf Club in Porthcawl.

Everyone is welcome to both. The family want it to be a fitting tribute to Steve, remembering the laughs and love he shared with everyone.

Family flowers only but donations welcome which will go to Porthcawl RNLI as Steve was in awe of the work of their volunteers. The Funeral Director, Wyn Bishop is happy to receive any donations.

Rest in Peace lovely, lovely Steve from all your 44 friends

Last weeks ración, was a beauty.

Sumptuous (& wonderfully big) wild red prawns. Split & roasted with confit garlic, chilli, olive oil, sea salt & parsley.

Raciónes are now back on our menus, and change at least weekly, and we have a whole raft of classic and creative dishes planned over the coming months.

Ración:
Meaning - a main, large, or sharing plate of food.
As in the vast majority of bars in Spain, dish sizes are often split into offering and pricing for:
A tapa (snack sized),
A media ración (half portion)
A ración (meal sized, or big boy plate).

In Bar 44, these dishes will be devised weekly with the most incredible bounty from the sea & land, taking our travels, seasonality, and favourite ideas from all over spain, with world class produce as always.

If you’re larger than a group of 2, raciónes are always a great way to order, as you all get to try the dish rather than fighting over small tapas plates which we often see ( doesn’t share food mind you, how very un - Spanish).

So when coming for lunch, afternoon grazing, evening drinks, or dinner, please ask what todays ración options from the kitchen are!

Deep-fried torta de barros veggie cheese is BACK😍 Plus a new ox cheek, cecina, artichoke, cod's roe and hash brown, beetroot and tuna dishes.....

Please share, jack is a friend of our 44 family❤️

We've been carrying out searches of the Cumberland Basin area in Bristol as part of our attempts to trace missing man Jack.

CCTV enquiries have now established that Jack was in the area of Brunel Lock Road/Brunel Way at 3.15am on Saturday 2 March, having earlier left friends in Hotwells Road following a night out.

Jack is aged 22, about 5ft 10ins tall and slim with short brown hair. He was wearing a quilted green/brown Barbour jacket over a beige woollen jumper, navy chinos and brown leather trainers with white soles.

We'd like to hear from anyone who was in the Cumberland Basin area in the early hours of Saturday, especially if you were travelling along Brunel Way, Brunel Lock Road or Merchants Road and have any dashcam footage which could help.

Our Story

Bar 44 was established by the Morgan siblings in 2002. Our first site was in Cowbridge in The Vale of Glamorgan (our home town) and was inspired by our love and passion for everything Spain. 44 venues serve exceptional drinks and excellent, impeccably sourced tapas. We are, atmospheric, welcoming, and driven to be the best in what we do. Our tapas focuses on artisan ingredients from the best Spanish producers and fantastic ingredients from South Wales.

A second site in Penarth opened in 2012, followed by Bar 44 Cardiff in 2015. The latest opening was in Clifton Village, Bristol in the summer of 2018.

We are extremely family-friendly and offer a Children’s menu, non-alcoholic cocktails, smoothies and milkshakes. High chairs are available along with colouring-in books.

During the course of the evening, the Bar transforms into an intimate and lively cocktail lounge with an atmosphere, service and cross-section of clientele which will ensure that the Bar 44 experience is not one which is easily forgotten.

Bookings are recommended for eating, there always some walk in tables and stools available for drinks and a nibble at the bar.
