It’s good to see occasional success from The Real bread campaign on the false claims on the origin and ingredients so often made by supermarkets

As a result of a Real Bread Campaign investigation, and subsequent researchBBC Morning Live, Morrisons has admitted it was using the claim ‘made in store from scratch’ to market products that were not made in store from scratch.

Replying on 30 July 2024 to a trading standards complaint submitted by the Campaign on 12 June 2024, West Yorkshire Joint Services (WYJS) included the confession from Morrisons: “We apologise that the signage you have seen that states our Best bread is ‘made from scratch’ is incorrect and we have advised all stores to take it down.”

Real Bread Campaign coordinator Chris Young said: “We welcome this result and trust that trading standards officers at West Yorkshire Joint Services will ensure the company swiftly fulfils its promise to correct this misleading marketing.”

You can read details of this case, and others, in the latest news section of www.realbreadcampaign.org

Proud to be part of this approach to reducing the plastic waste

Since starting our vending machines in Auchencairn and Castle Douglas, we've sold about 27,000 litres of milk. We did some maths and worked out that this will have saved about 13,000 - 54,000 plastic bottles (depending on the size people buy)!!

Although this does show the mind boggling amount plastic waste that must be out there, it also shows how fairly simple and small scale changes can make a big difference! Hopefully we see more local and plastic free food options in the future 🌍

We agree with many points in the post of Cllr John Young. We also think introduction of 2h no return free parking with a display disc would benefit both the public and the businesses on the high street while still preserving free access to parking in the town centre. Introduction of traffic wardens would help with enforcement of such measure as well as raise some revenue through fines and improve the accessibility of the town. There is a link to public survey in the comments and we would urge our local community to share their views. Otherwise we still baking!

I’ve just completed the Council’s survey on decriminalised parking.

I have concerns that what is being proposed may negatively impact both on quality of life, and on our local economy. Therefore, it’s my duty as an elected councillor to share those concerns.

My concerns relate entirely to the potential introduction of parking charges in Dumfries and Galloway. I have four main concerns.

Cost of Living and Economic Exclusion
Parking charges are a tax on local motorists. This will have a disproportionate effect on people on low wages working in the retail and service sectors in our larger towns. It will also have an impact on people living in rural areas who rely on cars to access essential services in our region’s towns. For many people across Dumfries and Galloway cars are a necessity, not a choice. To introduce an additional cost burden on local people during a cost of living crisis is unwise at best.

Trading Impact
As one of the councillors elected to represent the people of Castle Douglas I am alarmed at the potential impact of parking charges on traders on King Street. Parking charges will inevitably affect consumer behaviour. The retail and service sector has already been hit with huge increases in energy costs. Our local businesses can’t take another blow and I believe parking charges would lead to some of our independent local businesses becoming simply unsustainable.

Revenue Raising Uncertainty
There is very little evidence that parking charges levied across our region will generate any surplus income. The areas where such schemes have proved truly profitable are the larger cities. Evidence from other rural regions suggest schemes tend to run at a loss, becoming a net cost to our already stretched Council budgets.

Leading Questions
I am very concerned that the wording of survey questions are weighted in favour of adopting the scheme in the region. The leading nature of some of the questions calls into question the integrity of the survey entirely.

Whilst there is no doubt that inconsiderate parking by some is a source of annoyance to many, the introduction of parking charges has the potential to change our towns beyond recognition.

I am urging all local people to take part in the survey, but to consider carefully the unintended consequences that parking charges may bring.

That Dumfries and Galloway is unusual in not charging for car parking is to our credit. It enables our towns and villages to be welcoming and accessible. It has contributed to the viability of our traditional high streets.

I have absolutely no doubt that free parking is a good thing for our communities and our local businesses, and so I am strongly opposed to what is being proposed in this survey.

Our King street can be chaotic at times. So what? We learned to love it with its flaws. Locals know when to enter it and when it’s best to take a side street. Visitors are on holiday and in no rush. But mainly it allows for shoppers from the wide area to stock up, especially people who can’t carry their supplies very far. It’s not perfect but it’s serving our community the best it can. We’ve already lost parking at Market hill through redesign and electric chargers. There is definitely not enough parking towards the bottom of the town. The introduction of parking charges could push people into the arms of local supermarkets. While we need those too, we also have to avoid putting more barriers for our local shops. They work hard peddling through the challenges of the changes in current economic climate. Please have your say!

It’s Friday again and that means pizza night at the earths crust. Today we’re going all fishy with brown shrimp and scallops from west coast sea products. We are also offering our freshly made doughs for you to try at home yourself. We make the doughs on Thursday morning for a good 30 hour fermentation, so bulk orders would have to be made by Thursday 11am as we don’t want to disappoint our pizza regulars on Friday. Enjoy the lovely weather and hope to see you soon.

Does Castle Douglas, Scotland's self-appointed food town, live up to the hype? 23/08/2023

Good to get a shout out among other businesses in town. Even if it mentions how awkward we can be with our seasonal produce or plainly just selling out sometimes 😀

Does Castle Douglas, Scotland's self-appointed food town, live up to the hype? Scotland’s self-appointed ‘food town’, Castle Douglas is home to quality butchers, bakers and artisan ice cream producers.
