Ballaquinney Farm

Ballaquinney Farm has been running for three generations of the Coole family, we have potatoes, beef cattle, sheep, firewood, hay and haylage.

Ballaquinney Farm has been running for three generations. Each year we grow potatoes from seed using traditional methods. We supply local wholesalers, small local businesses and consumers including some well known chip shops. On our farm we rear cattle for beef and sheep for lamb, to supply the Isle of Man fatstock. We also have a firewood plot and from this we hand cut and deliver firewood, in requested quantities as kindling sticks or logs, all netted by hand.

Hi

It is with regret that we would like to inform all our customers that we will be ceasing potato production this year.

It certainly isn't an easy decision but with the continued rise in energy, fertiliser and seed costs, amidst a sharp slump in local sales we feel a high risk crop like potatoes is becoming too expensive to risk growing for our business.

We would like to thank all our customers who have supported us over the last 50 years, and those who support local produce in general.

We have enough supply to last this summer 2024.

We are looking forward to future projects and my father is looking forward to getting some of his life back and enjoying semi retirement!

Many thanks

Maurice & Kevin Coole

The popular online feature helps thousands of people track the location of buses each week, and has been adapted to help our community show their support for the tractors as they pass.

Just look out for the red tractor icons, which will indicate the start and end of the procession.

Visit the Isle of Man Young Farmers page for updates and route maps.

Fertiliser supply issues 'a huge threat' to food production says MNFU Farmers struggling with availability as well as rising costs

It was great to show the gang from Betty Pie Co. around our farm and showcase what we do.
What a refreshing change to have people from the secondary food industry showing a genuine interest in local produce, how the food is grown and how we care for the countryside and environment.
We highly recommend a visit to Victory Cafe Isle of Man what a lovely job they have done with the place and the food was delicious! I even bought a jumper up there 🤣

Keep it local

Governments and consumers 'complacent' about food availability Warning from farming representative

A good post highlighting the pressure's that Manx agriculture is facing.
With the price hikes in fertiliser, fuel, packaging, shipping, etc agriculture is facing a very difficult problem. A problem that is not unique to potato production or the Isle of Man.
As we look to ordering our fertiliser and seed for 2023 we are going to have to ask ourselves is it viable? Can we take yet another gamble? Will people pay more for their food?
Ultimately it is not up to me or any other farmer to grow food. My main concern is my family and our business.

PS: These are not our potatoes.

Kevin

Please read to the end because I'm scared for our farmers, and actually, quite honestly; people like me. I love traditional food. So simple. Stodgy, belly warming comfort type food; you can't beat it. I'm half Manx (spuds and herring) half Scottish (mince and tatties) Don't get me wrong, I'm up there for that special Michelin star multi sensory taste sensation. But wow. The farmer who supplies our spuds explained, this time 3 years ago, fertilizer was £280 a tonne. It's now around £900. Our spuds clearly have to go up in price. I'm worried farmers will simply stop growing. And, whilst I totally get why, I'm still devastated by the closure of Ramsey Bakery. This is too hard. I don't want so much import substitution.
