Why are potato prices so high and what does it mean for our customers?

If you are a fan of fish and chips, you may have noticed that the price of your favourite takeaway has gone up recently. This is mainly because of the soaring cost of potatoes, which have more than doubled in price in the last year. In this blog post, we will explain why this happened and what it means for our customers.

What caused the potato price hike?

There are several factors that have contributed to the potato price hike, but the main one is the weather. Last summer, the UK experienced a severe heatwave that reduced the yield and quality of the potato crop. Along with the amount of rainfall this year. Then, just before Christmas, a period of extreme cold damaged the stored potatoes and made them more prone to rotting. As a result, the supply of potatoes was much lower than usual, while the demand remained high.

Another factor is the rising cost of energy, labour and transport, which have increased the costs of growing, harvesting, storing and delivering potatoes. Farmers, wholesalers and retailers have passed these costs on to consumers.

A third factor is global inflation which has affected many food items, including potatoes. The UK imports some of its potatoes from other countries, such as Egypt and Israel, where prices have also gone up due to higher production costs and currency fluctuations.

How much have potato prices increased?

To put this into perspective, here is a table that shows how much some common potato products have increased in price over the last year, based on data from Assosia**1**.(https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/inflationandpriceindices/timeseries/cznk/mm23), a data firm that tracks supermarket prices.

As you can see, some potato products have become significantly more expensive over the last year.

What does it mean for our customers?

As a fish and chip shop, we rely on potatoes as one of our main ingredients. We buy our potatoes from local suppliers on the open market, which means we are exposed to price fluctuations. We try to keep our costs as low as possible, but sometimes we have no choice but to increase our prices to cover our expenses. Unfortunately, the market rates have risen beyond our control, and we have to adjust our prices accordingly. However, this is only a temporary measure, and we promise to bring them back down as soon as the market situation improves. Furthermore, we will not be passing on the full cost to you and we will be absorbing a minimum of 20% of the cost.

We understand that this may affect your budget and your enjoyment of our food. We appreciate your loyalty and support during these difficult times. We hope that you will continue to visit us and enjoy our delicious fish and chips.

We also want to assure you that we never compromise on the quality or quantity of our food. We always use fresh and high-quality potatoes for our chips, which we peel and cut ourselves every day. We also use premium fish and oil for our frying, which we change regularly to ensure crispiness and flavour.

We always look for ways to improve our service and offer you value for money. That’s why we have introduced some special offers and discounts for our customers, such as:
