On this day in 1947, the last tug-of-war competition occurred between Dockyard departments for the Lord Rochester Challenge Shield.
More recently, The Master Ropemakers were tasked with making a 530m rope to be used in a Guinness World Record attempt for the longest game of tug of war.
The rope is 36mm synthetic h**p; made of two 240 metre ropes spliced with a 50 metre joining piece to create a total length of 530m. Once completed, it was couriered up to Cefn Siden Beach, Wales for the big game.
The record-breaking match took place on 1 March 2024 with a recorded distance of 516.85 metres and a total of 100 participants. The winning team was led by Welsh rugby player Elinor Snowsill.

Rope has been made at Chatham Dockyard for over 400 years, miles upon miles of rope that has rigged the mightiest vessels ever to take to the sea, including Nelson’s VICTORY.
Today Chatham is the only one of the original four Royal Navy Ropeyards to remain in operation and, together with its related buildings, forms the finest integrated group of 18th century manufacturing buildings in Britain.

Our story
At the heart of the Historic Dockyard Chatham, Master Ropemakers maintains a process of rope making that dates back on this site for more than 400 years.
Utilized for centuries by the Royal Navy, the Master Ropemakers Ropery was once used to produce up to 5000 tonnes of cordage for its fleet of nearly 1000 ships. The Royal Navy has since left the site, but as the Navy shipped out, The Master Ropemakers moved in and our Ropery remains the oldest rope making facility in the UK.
We still use the ¼ mile long rope walk and machinery from the Victorian era, which can be seen on Victorian Ropery Tours, as well as on more modern equipment including our testing house to make our rope. We use natural and synthetic fibres in manufacture and our teams of craftsmen not only produce the rope but work with it: splicing, knotting, net making and creating bespoke products to customer requirements.
