A beautiful opportunity to come and discover the art of sound. Six workshops being led by Jaynie Cordell (formally Tricker) and Rachael Thorogood in receiving a guided creative meditation followed by a sound bath incorporating Jaynie’s hand built ceramic sound bowls and a collection of planetary gongs mirroring the current planetary positions in the universe. artForce collective: Air and Earth (19/06/24 – 25/06/24)
Exhibition Statement
Opposites are all around us, providing perspective, context, and a richness of experience. There is no light without dark, no sound without silence, no discovery without first being lost. Opposites complement and inform one another, simultaneously separate yet inextricably linked.
Air and Earth are two such elements that follow this universal principal; one is filled with light and space, the other solid and absolute. Opposites enable us to interpret our environment, share knowledge and make sense of our world.
artForce collective presents fresh new works celebrating the power of opposing forces found within the world around us. These contrasts can be found in the landscape, in our interactions with others and in the act of creative exploration. Jo Biggadike, Colin Clark, Karen Fitzpatrick and Steve Roberts present a range of printmaking, painting and illustration which reflects on these themes in diverse and interesting ways.

About Friday Faces
We are an eclectic group of enthusiastic artists who get together on a Friday morning. Under Sheila Bryant’s guidance we tackle that ultimate artistic challenge otherwise known as the portrait.
We each approach the subject in our own way and often the painting says as much about the artist as it does about the sitter. We try to interpret what sort of image the sitter presents to the world, are they calm, or are they excitable. Do they seem extrovert with colourful clothes or are they more at ease in comfort clothes. Then there is the reaction of the artist to the morning. Have they had one cup of coffee too many or are they cool calm and collected.
Each artist has his or her preferred medium. Some use oils, or acrylics, others prefer to work with pencils or crayons, then there are those whose choice is charcoal and pastels. Some really brave souls use water colours.
This is an exhibition of those wonderful creations for you to enjoy, talk about and inspire.
Friday Faces will be at the Gardens Gallery from Wednesday 29th May to Tuesday 4th June. We will be open from 10am until 5 pm with the exception of Tuesday when we will close at 1pm.
The exhibitors are:
Adrian Ham, Alan Williams, Annie Hayworth, Bob Gower, Hazel Jukes, Karen Bloch, Mandy Walters, Marilyn Hay, Phil Brown, Sandra Edgington, Sheila Bryant, Simon Howe, Will Clapton.

IMPROV
9 Artists Collective, a group of Gloucestershire-based artists, have been selected to exhibit at The Gardens Gallery during the 2024 Jazz Festival. Under the heading IMPROV, their exhibition will jostle through jazz history, politics, culture, performance and musicianship. Nothing is scripted, nothing is out of bounds.
Through the duration of the exhibition, they are supporting the charity Emily’s Gift - to fund treats for children affected by cancer - by raffling 8 pieces of original art, all proceeds of which will go to the fund.
Chris was born and educated in Surrey. As a teenager his hobby was photography and sketching, cars and motor racing in particular were the favourite subjects and he received many school prizes for his work.
After leaving school Chris qualified as a surveyor, working closely with architects his interest in both new and old architecture grew to an extent that he spent much leisure time drawing fine details of buildings of interest. Here he developed a keen eye and became proficient in producing accurate perspective.
Having extensive vacations in Italy Chris’s passion was to paint ‘en plein air’, the beautiful surroundings with inspiring architecture and many varied landscapes held a particular interest in the way changing shadows of the day influenced the mood of how the image would/could be portrayed.
All his work is original and is either painted on location or from many detailed photographs that he has taken himself. Chris paints with a variety of media including watercolours, acrylics, oils and pastels.
It has been Chris’s privilege to paint alongside many recognized artists, such as Roy Holding of UK and Thomas Schaller of America.
Chris exhibits widely, particularly with local art groups Cheltenham Open Studios, Vale of Evesham Art Society and Stratford Upon Avon Art Society. In the summer of 2010 Chris was invited to take part in a professional art competition in Tuscany Italy, this required an image painted ‘en plein air’ within a limited time period, depicting the architecture within the walls of the city of Castiglion Fiorentino and was delighted to achieve second prize and best watercolour.
In 2023 he was a finalist in the prestigious International Broadway Art Festival.
His work is present in many private collections at Home and Abroad. He also has a Private Gallery in Kinsham, Gloucestershire. See website for open days.
Sarah Goddard
Perspectives - 10-16 April 2024
Sarah Goddard is a sight-impaired mixed-media artist. The colours, shapes, textures and patterns of the natural world can calm or enliven us, and Sarah draws inspiration from them when creating her mixed-media artworks.
We all see the world around us differently and our experiences impact on how we perceive our surroundings. Being sight-impaired, Sarah brings different perceptions and representations of the world to her art. She aims to embody the emotional experiences prompted by nature, and snapshots of the way she experiences the world.
Perspectives brings together some of Sarah’s recent artworks based on local landscapes with more abstract pieces created in response to her experience of living with Long Covid. During the exhibition visitors are welcomed to create their own artwork inspired by Montpellier Gardens, which will be incorporated into a collaborative piece.

Karen Fitzpatrick Artist Statement
BA(Hons) Fine Art
Mbe.Hicat.prac (Holistic Integrated Creative Arts Therapist)
I am a contemporary abstract landscape artist. I grew up in South Wales where from an early age I developed a love of nature and being outdoors. Landscape has always been my inspiration. I recently lived in Gloucestershire for over ten years and during that time drew most of my inspiration from the Cotswolds. Recently I relocated back to Wales where I am now enjoying exploring new landscapes along the Carmarthenshire coastline.
I begin my paintings by sketching and taking photographs out in the landscape. I try to soak up the essence of the place, capturing colours, lines, and my emotional response to the landscape around me. I connect with nature in a way that excites me and makes me feel authentically me. I try to convey this in my paintings. Once back in my studio I like to work with a limited colour palette, deciding at the start on just three or four colours. I use mixed media on cradled panel, canvas board or paper. Colour, marks and texture are all important to me in my work. My initial marks are loose, intuitive, and spontaneous. I then work back into the painting, layering colours, and often stripping back areas to reveal hidden glimpses from beneath until I reach that moment where I feel at peace with the painting, achieving a sense of my initial emotional response.
To be true to my authentic self I feel a need to be creative and I am propelled by my desire to see how far I can take my practice. My art is within me, I am the only person who can create my art. This excites me.

Jane Powell Artist Statement
Having grown up in rural Worcestershire, Jane has always found joy in expansive landscapes. However, living in the landlocked Midlands does give her a hankering after the coast. Like many, Jane has always felt an affinity with the sea and can watch it for hours; visiting as often as possible with sketchbook in hand to try and capture the true essence of a particular place at that moment in time. Jane loves painting outdoors and feels truly alive when finding new ways to express the light, beauty and emotion in the landscape under the changing skies.
Oils and acrylics are Jane’s preferred mediums; she enjoys exploring abstract and impressionistic techniques, harmonising colours, exploring shapes, texture and experimenting with different mark-making implements.
Jane has exhibited her work in a number of galleries in the UK and sells her work to collectors in the UK and internationally. Jane teaches workshops in oil and cold wax and acrylics and is open for commissions.

Extraordinary Ordinary – description
In 2021 Peter Haagensen built an Art studio for Mark Wagstaff through which they discovered a shared faith in Christ. As it turned out, there’s also a commonality in the genesis for their artwork. They are each inspired by what might, at first, not merit attention; no obvious beauty, but something that has potential to reveal the universal beauty that can be seen in all things; in the right season, at the right moment. Peter photographing texture or shadow, compositions and contrasts that are so arresting and poignant and Mark, who from the seeds of biro diary doodles creates rich, luminous paintings. A little later Peter and Mark met up with Rob Goldsmith, an established artist with an excellent reputation. Rob proved to be a great support and so they decided to exhibit together in order to express their shared faith and creativity.
Artist profiles
Peter Haagensen
My day job is building. This series of photographs started as images of odd piles of bricks or concrete reinforcement bars that lay on the ground in interesting angles. The general impression being of an abstract image observed while working or while stopping to have a cuppa.
As things developed, I started taking photos in everyday life at home, at work, on holidays, with family and friends. A common thread has been finding imagery which is barely recognisable and purely abstract being an extreme close-up or in intense light or being unusual subject matter. My main discipline being not to use filters, special lenses, or lighting beyond what was already there in the observable world. My fascination being with light, colour, texture, line and shapes that occupy the world around us but we are frequently too busy to notice.
It occurred to me that we are surrounded by an immense number of beautiful sights every day, but we look past them to connect with the usual sights that we need for our daily routines.
I was tempted to restrict my contribution to this show to being entirely abstract in keeping with this line of enquiry. But at the last minute I decided to include some easily recognisable images to give an anchor or connection for the less naturalistic ones.
I also wanted to explore and show my appreciation for this extraordinarily beautiful world for which I am so thankful.
Mark Wagstaff
The inspiration for my contribution to this exhibition comes from the everyday experience of doodling. It all started when I was working in a stressful job. I used a diary as a time management tool – listing different tasks, appointments, and other reminders on each page. It was so satisfying to cross out each completed task with a biro. I also used highlighter pens to prioritise important entries.
My diary was full of bright colours and crossings out . These patterns acted as the starting point for doodles made during phone calls, boring meetings, stressful and quiet times. As the years went by these doodles became ever more colourful and elaborate. They seemed to have a life of their own as they flowed onto each diary page!
What did this extraordinary outpouring mean? I still don’t fully understand, but I think there are clues. My employment required a rational and controlled approach; I believe this was symbolised by the grid like structure of the diary entries. The doodles however were the opposite, they seemed to break free from the prison like grid, releasing suppressed emotions through colour and symbolic images.
Among the many images I noticed certain themes. Examples included people and animals in harmony, music and spiritual expressions rooted in my Christian faith. When I left my work, I experimented with the doodle approach using multimedia. My aim is to reproduce the same natural flow of image making. I haven’t yet reproduced the same level of invention and fluency, but I will continue to try!
Robert Goldsmith
Robert is based in Cheltenham and has been a professional artist and illustrator since 1980. He is best known for his exceptional watercolours, and is fascinated by the different light, shade and reflection that is conjured by changing weather conditions. His excellent draughtsmanship gives a sense of structure to his compositions, the freshness and luminosity which are characteristic of his style, giving familiar subjects a special vitality.

CONTRASTS EXHIBITION
Tracy Hunt is a Cheltenham based artist. She works with cold and encaustic wax, and mixed media. Her landscape work is semi-abstract, depicting atmospheric land and seascapes evoking memories, sensations and experiences. Tracy’s encaustic-wax work is about the fragility and beauty of nests. Recently Tracy has been exploring colour palettes outside her comfort zone, alongside abstract compositions with subtle changes in tone, leaving areas of underlayers exposed creating ‘sweet-spots’ of interest.
Caroline Cattermull is an intuitive artist, working from her home studio in the Cotswolds. Using acrylic paint, she creates playful, distinctive colour palettes to make her paintings vibrate with energy and intrigue. Her brush technique creates an illusion of a pulsing life-force, a sense of movement, both real and mystical. Inspired by nature and travel, she weaves a story through her attention to detail, often embedding elements of abstract shape in her art.
This exhibition showcases the contrasting process and styles of these two artists. While the subject matter in Caroline’s paintings is obvious, they have a supernatural energy, conveyed by immediate, confident and technicolour brushmarks. Tracy’s amorphous landscapes and abstracts emerge and fade, akin to places in our dream-states that we try to remember upon waking.
A Moment in Time
This is the second exhibition at The Gardens Gallery for local artists Susie Gilbert and Ellie Thomas. The first, “People and Places” was such a positive experience we just knew we’d be back.
‘A Moment in Time’ exhibition comprises mostly vibrant landscape paintings exploring the essence of the here and now and capturing the moment before it’s gone…

Original Artworks by Jonathan Oakes - The Sequel
I would like to invite you to my exhibition of original artworks
Gardens Gallery Montpellier Gardens Cheltenham GL50 1SD
Jan 31th – 5th Feb 2024
Open daily 10am – 5pm
My second solo exhibition at the Gardens Gallery, I was last here in September 2023. I must have enjoyed the experience, because I have come back for the sequel. It is not a repeat show as over half the artworks are fresh and new.
I create artworks which are abstract by definition but are just starting points for the viewer’s imagination. The themes behind the majority of my artworks are embedded in environmental issues and examine everyday occurrences and habits, sometimes questioning our collective behaviours.
Many of the artworks are accompanied by a description or a narrative of some kind, which hopefully illuminates the meaning and triggers the viewer’s imagination. My art has been described as organic and expressive with intricate details. A vivid and playful imagination plays an important part in creating the artworks and helps me produce my individual style.
I will be present at the gallery throughout the exhibition and will be happy to chat about my artworks etc. I look forward to seeing you there.

Jan Petrie information
Jan Petrie is a visual artist, with a studio near the Cotswold town of Painswick. This is her second exhibition at the Gardens Gallery. Over her career she's exhibited in London and all over southern England. Her paintings can be found in private collections in the UK and many other countries.
Jan's art is deeply rooted in and inspired by nature and the landscapes she has visited. In these new paintings she aims to convey a pared- down, elemental sense of detail, place and mood – the fundamental impressions that linger on in the memory.
Working mainly in oils, Jan sometimes bonds copper , gold, or silver leaf onto sections of the canvas for their aesthetic qualities – the specific light they lend to the finished work.
