Royal Navy Officer's Solar Topee in case
Hat made by Lock & Co, Hatters, London. Case by GIEVES. Case named to R.D. de Sola R.N.V.R.
Raphael David de Sola was an interesting man. Born in Canada in 1902, he became a multi-millionaire stock-broker in London. When his sister married the ship-owner Sir John Ellerman, they worked together and gave away millions to good causes. In 1940 he gave £1,000,000 to help the victims of an earthquake in Turkey. He volunteered to help with the evacuation from Dunkirk and went with a party using towed life-boats to take men to the ships. In June 1940 he was commissioned Sub-Lieutenant, R.N.V.R. and Lieutenant in September. Posted to shore bases at Wildfire (Sheerness), May 1943 to Comorant (Gibraltar), Hannibal (Taranto, Italy) November 1944, Acting Jewish-Chaplain in Algiers and finally Caroline (Belfast) May 1945. Relinquished commission April 1946. He died in London in 1989.
Coldstream Guards officer's sword. GV cypher on blade. Initials E.F.R. on blade.
Eustace Frederick Robb was born in 1899, son of Major-General Sir Frederick Robb. Commissioned into the Coldstream Guards May 1918, he did not serve overseas. He retired on half-pay in 1922. In 1932 he became the first BBC TV producer and he produced the first ever BBC TV broadcast. He later became Direcrtor of Television. During WW2 he was recommissioned and spent the war distributing decoded messages from Bletchley Park. In the 1950s he inherited Great Tew, a large estate in Oxfordshire. When he died in 1985 he left everything to his friend James Johnston, valued at over £4 million.
Among a collection of knives and bayonets that we bought in, were five etched parade bayonets. Sadly, the etching was done post-war, but they are decorative.

Robert Verschoyle Walker was from Co. Cavan, Ireland and enlisted into the Leinster Regiment. He was commissioned with the Connaught Rangers and served with the Royal Flying Corps (25 Squadron). London Gazette 31 May 1916 he was awarded the Military Cross "For conspicuous gallantry and skill. When on patrol duty with 2nd Lt. Lord Doune he sighted a Fokker machine 1000 feet below them. 2nd Lt. Lord Doune at once dived and when within 60 yards, 2nd Lt. Walker opened fire. Lord Doune then headed straight for the Fokker, which had to rise steeply to avoid a collision. 2nd Lts Walker and Lord Doune then both opened fire and show away one wing of the Fokker, which fell behind our lines."
In June 1916 he was wounded in the lower jaw by shrapnel. In October 1917 he crashed his plane, injuring his face and legs.
