Cycle to School Week - Bikeability 23/09/2024

Cycling awareness on our roads

Cycle to School Week 2024 runs from the 23rd – 27th September 2024. This awareness day is held each year and engages schools across the UK to come together to encourage students and families to ditch their cars and cycle to school. Not only cycling help with health but it also helps with reduced carbon footprint. Roads are quieter and it cuts down the amount of pollution at school gates.

Bike safety is so important, learning skills and how to be safe on the roads. The Mental Health Foundation found that physical activities such as cycling improve mental alertness, self-esteem, mood and energy levels and also reduces anxiety and stress. Teachers observed pupils who cycled or walked to school were more relaxed, alert, and ready to start the day compared to those who travelled by car.

PDA Law support Bikeability to encourage more children and families to pedal to school this year. You can obtain more information about the Trust here: https://www.bikeability.org.uk/cycletoschoolweek/

Always ensure that safety steps are taken before cycling with children to school. Teach them how to use hand signals, how to stop at junctions, how to cycle in a straight line and how to look over their shoulder when turning, changing lanes or merging with any traffic. All cyclists should always wear a helmet as these reduce head injuries by up to 85%. Ensure your child is visible to drivers of vehicles by making sure they are wearing bright clothing or reflective clothing, have reflective ankle bands or vests, ensure their bike is fitted with lights/reflectors and they could wear a brightly coloured backpack or one with built in lights.

According to www.gov.uk between 2004 and 2022 fatalities were down from 134 to 91, serious injuries increased by 21% and pedal cycle traffic increased by 50%. On average 2 pedal cyclists died and 81 were seriously injured per week.

In 2022, 91 pedal cyclists were killed in Great Britain, 4,056 were seriously injured and 11,546 were slightly injured. To ensure you have a safe journey always try to use designated cycle paths and always signal clearly at all times to let other road users know your intentions.

Our Personal Injury Solicitors at PDA Law specialise in cycling claims so if you have been injured as a result of an accident whilst on your bike call 01244 665399 to see how we can help you. All claims are run on a no win, no fee basis.
Get on your bike and make a difference!

Day 12 - Yellow weather warning - I had been advised that awful weather was moving in. I just didn’t see the point making my way over the hills in dreadful weather at this late stage in the challenge. Therefore, I changed my route to a ‘foul weather alternative’ - in this case, it was the Deeside Way. A disused railway line to Aberdeen but nonetheless a beautiful path. The rain did not hit until around 3 pm. As the weather became progressively worse there was nothing left to do but to keep walking. To find a campsite around 7:30 pm I finally found a spot in the woods which was fine but not great. I was soaked to the core.

Day 4 - it started unremarkably - I was camped next to a dam on a poor spot. I trudged through woodlands until I got to Easter Mandally. I saw a sign for a campsite and I did ponder setting up in a campsite to let all my kit dry off. As I was walking towards the site I recalled being here before and there was a house Ollie and I had asked for water. I was desperate and wondered whether they would remember me. To my amazement they did. Malcolm & Valerie invited me in for tea but I was too muddy and smelly to go in. So we sat outside in the garden with a cup of tea and an apple pie. Both are from the north east and the hospitality from northerners never ceases to impress me. Thank you guys. Oh, by the way, I did come across a pub on the way to the Great Glen Way. Rule no.1 never go past a pub without popping for a pint. Rule no.2. Know when to leave. I have now set up my tent wishing I was still in the pub. I’m told there is a wild boar problem in these woods. If I let my italian relatives know, I reckon I’ll have wild boar sausages by the weekend. Problem solved!

Day 2 - frighteningly steep - the terrain is boggy on the top. Great views. Scrambling over rocks. Slow-going. We got to the first peak and we prematurely celebrated with photos. However, shortly after we realised there was a steep descent/scramble down rocks. That in itself is not a problem. The frightening bit was the precipice on either side. This was definitely beyond our skill level and I would have preferred being attached to rope. Slowly we decended. But in the 2nd peak there was what I can only describe as a vertical decent. We just stood there with incredulity as to how we were supposed to manage this with precipice below us. After a few deep breaths we decided we would risk sliding down slowly and making our way to safer ground. We camped that night slightly further on - we were exhausted and failed to make it to our end point for the day. We didn’t care. We hoped we were past the worst of it.

Day 1 - false sense of security- I always fall for this. I start on an easy track. The sun is shining and all is good with the world. At around 3pm we start the ascent and that’s when I realise I am nowhere near as fit as I like to think I am.

Day 10 - Montrose - I have finally managed to get to the beautiful beach at Montrose. My feet are blistered and I am ready to hang up my boots for a while. TGO Challenge No. 8 done. Taxi!

Day 8 - Braemar to Clova. Another 40km day. Looking at my route sheet - I would be ascending and descending like a yo-yo - just what my poor feet need. I would head towards Balmoral before taking the track towards Inchnabobart to Spittal of Glenmuick before descending into Glen Doll. I was warned that the storms last November had devestated the forest but damage was massive. A huge part of the forest was flattened. Hey ho - keep walking. Every step brings me closer to home.

Photos from PDA Law Solicitors's post 19/05/2022

Day 7 - Glen Feshie to Braemar. This Is a 40km+ stroll. My poor feet have definitely been abused on this trek. Glen Feshie is absolutely beautiful to walk along. The scenery and views are fantastic. It’s just very long when you’re walking it. To get to Braemar would usually be split into two days or so I was told by others I met along the track. The killer is when you have come to the end of the Glen and there is still 10km of road walking to get to Braemar. I think I need more Compeed.

Photos from PDA Law Solicitors's post 16/05/2022

Day 6 - The Monadhliath Mountains. I was dreading this part of my trek. I had done this section before and was hell tramping through boggy terrain. There was was no path so you try to follow the general direction as best you can as you jump from one peat bog to another. On this occasion I decided a slightly different tactic - I would follow the deer trail. Deer have to be in of the most efficient animals when getting from A-B without wasting energy zig-zagging across the peat bogs as I do. I must say it was my best decision of the day. They instinctively managed to follow a route which was relatively dry and direct. It was so bad after all. To top it, I found two hunting lodges open at the beginning of a track. I have a habit of trying lodge doors to see if their open - solely to see if I can get out of the rain (honest). Anyway, I managed a quick lunch before continuing my journey through Kingussie for a cup of tea and bowl of soup before continuing on to Glen Feshie. The final photo is where I am currently camped for the night.

Day 5 - Ferry across Loch Ness with Captain Gordon. The views were great, the sun was out what a great way to start the day. Of course it wasn’t going to last. I joined up part of my day with 3 TGO’ers from USA. We were heading the same direction. It made for good company. We parted late afternoon and soon after the weather switched from relatively calm to hail to driving freezing rain. Hey ho, the sun was nice while it lasted. What happened to that high pressure the weather presenters told us all about?

16/05/2022

Day 4 - a relatively easy but long walk into Drumnadrochit. It was also the first day of sunshine. I make no apologies - I made my way straight to the pub for a pint. After 3 days of horrendous weather and wild-camping in strong gale winds and freezing conditions, I think I deserve it. The shower will have to wait. I take this opportunity to apologise to customers at the Fiddler’s Arms who may have been put off their meal by any strong body odour.

Day 3 - more rain. Nothing worse than putting on in the morning the cold wet clothes from the day before. I took the path through Glenn Choieachain heading towards Glen Affric. I battled the rain and the wind to get to the remotest hostel in the Uk. All I could think of was a hot cup of tea and possibly a homemade scone. I’ve been here before and it is very welcoming by the warden. As I got to the front door there was a sign taped to it. IT started “apologies for any inconvenience” - sadly the hosel had been booked out to a private party. I sat outside in the wind very disappointed. Hey ho, I decided to press on and make up lost time. I followed the Affric Kintail way until I got to a village called Knockfin. I was desperate for a camp site to end the day but couldn’t find one amongst the sheep fields. A little old lady popped out of her cottage and offered her front garden. That was perfect. Before doing so she wanted me to assist her in herding two lambs out of one field into another. I laughed to myself as I found myself following sheep dog commands from this little old lady at the end of a long day. Today was ok.

Unlikely to have a signal for the next couple of days until I get to Drumnadrochit. Rain is forecast- there’s a shocker. Today will take me over the Falls of Glomach unless it’s too windy. It’s a bit of a scramble to get to the top. This view made me laugh. Can you spot the pub? You may have to zoom in.

What a day - in a word - ‘wet’. I arrived in Dornie looking like a drowned rat. Tent was up quickly, had one of my adventure meals - vegetable hotpot which was essentially mash potato and small bits of vegetables. I then dropped into a deep sleep. This is the view. Not bad. Forecast for tomorrow - heavy rain. Presumably more of the same. Hey ho - for tonight I am in my sleeping bag and I’m relatively warm.

I have set off for the highlands of Scotland for a coast to coast challenge to raise some needy funds for our local school St Theresa’s. Today is day 1. Setting off from Plockton to Dornie. the weather is mixed swapping from heavy rain to light rain to a little sun. Let’s hope it stays moderately dry.
