Here is a magnificent Elizabethan-style oak refectory table, it is certainly one of the largest antique tables I've come across, seating around an impressive 18 - 20 people comfortably, this would make an outstanding and grand table to dine on! The English oak has a wonderful deep rich brown colour to it , with lighter caramel highlights that run throughout, along with a striking patination, that only age, polish, and wax can achieve! The heavy English oak planked top has cleated ends, and below it has a beautiful hand-carved gadrooned bulge freeze with very large, prominent bulbous legs, cup, and cover swelling enriched with gadrooning and foliage voluted capitals, terminating on solid block feet united by a low box stretcher.
These beautiful carvings which were very popular from about the last quarter of the 16th century, legs of tables acquired a highly decorative and architectural aspect with considerable turning and carving producing cup-shaped bulbs along the lines of Flemish designs in Europe with their acanthus carving and gadroons.
