Monkey Fist Adventures

Making adventure accessible for all.

Hello to you all!

There has been a lot going on behind the scenes recently, one of which has been the boys deciding which charities they will be supporting during their crossing..... 🇦🇮 ➡️🇰🇪

They have chosen two amazing causes and are proud to announce that one of those will be Race Against Dementia

1 in 3 people are diagnosed with dementia in their life time, so this is something that will impact every single person reading this post in the future, if it's not already doing so. 😢

Dementia is not a specific disease but is rather a general term for the impaired ability to remember, think, or make decisions that interferes with doing everyday activities. Because of this, it also has a huge impact on the family of anyone living Dementia. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

When times are hard and the going is tough on the boat, Billy Matt and John will be driven by the fact that they will be supporting the search for a cure for something that is much bigger than themselves.

We will annonce the second charity in the next coupe of days along with a link to donate. 💲💲

Billy spent the weekend camping with the lovely folk of Dark Swan and Serve On and bumped into an A&E doctor called Jamie when he was setting up his tent. ⛺

After chatting for 5 minutes about why they had been invited to the weekend it turns out that Jamie rowed the Indian Ocean himself back in 2009.......🚣‍♂️

There are only about 65 people IN THE WORLD that have rowed across the Indian, and by some strange twist in fate two of them ended up camping next to each other over the weekend. We are going to take this as a good omen.

They then spent the day pulling apart pallets to help build a dining area for the Serve On HQ with a bunch of amazing indivduals, all of whom had their own stories of adventure......

Meet Monkey Fist 🐵 👊

the boat that will be home for Billy, John and Mathew pritchard for anything up to 100 days as they cross the Indian ocean next year 🌊🌊

She's 29 ft long, about 5 ft wide and will be their life support system whilst they are at sea. 🚣‍♀️

As you can see, she needs a little bit if TLC but John and Billy have already been hard at work taking off her old wrap and are nearly there....

More to follow soon!!

Announcment!!

The road to a good adventure is rarely a well paved one and unfortunately this year the speed bump of doom has derailed the teams best laid plans to row the Indian Ocean this year..... 🚣‍♂️

In mid January they received the news that all adventurers dread, that their title sponosr had unfortunately been forced to withdraw their funding 😱😱

This left them in a bit of a pickle as their beloved boat was due to be shipped out this month, leading them into a few mad weeks scrabbling about to see if they could raise the cash needed before they missed their shipping window. 🚢

However, it was not meant to be and a week ago the crew decided that it was just not worth the stress they were putting themselves under to make it work and they made the group decision to postpone until 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣5️⃣.

After all, the Indian Ocean isn't going anywhere...... 😁

Billy, Mathew pritchard and John Haskell will soon be bringing you updates as they prepare themselves to take on their 5000 mile Indian Ocean crossing next year!!

The next Monkey Fist Adventure is live......

Looking forward to getting out on the water with Haskell and Pritchard and crossing off the Indian Ocean from the list. 👍

🥳🎉 ***A NEW ADVENTURE!*** 🥳🎉

In the summer of 2024 I will row unsupported across the Indian Ocean, and as part of a crew of three, with my two friends Billy Taylor and John Haskell. 🌊🚣‍♂️

Launching from mainland Australia, we'll row well over 5,000 miles, to mainland Africa - we will be the first trio in the world to ever attempt this. 😲

Other than taking a lot longer (potentially 100+ days), the Indian ocean is a consistently challenging environment - enormous waves, strong currents, powerful storms - the few people that have successfully crossed even a part of this ocean often agree - this is the big one. 🤯

I will be in good company though, John rowed the Atlantic in a wooden boat in 2012 and was the man that got me interested in ocean rowing in the first place, and Billy not only skippered the Atlantic crossing I did, but has also rowed from Australia to Mauritius before. 🙌

I won't lie, this is on a whole new level to the Atlantic crossing...and it brings with it a healthy dose of fear. But as tough as the Atlantic was, it brought a calm to my chaos...a calm that is very difficult to find anywhere else, and ever since returning I've wanted to go back to that place. 🙏

I'll keep you all updated on the progress as we prepare everything for what might be the greatest adventure of my life. 💪

3 Questions.....

1. For those of you who have already rowed an ocean, where did you leave from?

2. Why did you choose to leave from there?

3. If you were going to do another row, where would you set off from next?

𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐖 𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃𝐄𝐃 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐍 𝐎𝐂𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐂𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆.

In May 2024 the Monkey Fist Adventures team will be attempting an Indian ocean crossing from Australia to Kenya with a 4 person crew.

One of the original crew has just had to give up her seat due to personal reasons so we are now looking for a new crew member to join the project.

The crossing is approximately 5,000 miles and anticipate being at sea for anything up to 100 days.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲. Any ocean crossing is an accomplishment but we believe that the conditions that the Indian presents make it the toughest of the big 3 by far. Because of this we are looking for someone who has ocean rowing or sailing experience with RYA qualifications in Sea survival, essential navigation and first aid as a minimum.

We have a well equipped boat (which has only recently finished crossing the Indian from Australia to Mauritius) and most of the funding in place, with the exisiting 3 crew members having 7 ocean crossings between them including a crossing of the Indian between Australia and Mauritius in 2018.

We do not know the exact date that we will be arriving in Australia but are aiming for mid to late Arpil, meaning that you must be able to commit to being away from then until anything up to late August.

Hi All,

INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY FOR SOMEBODY TO ROW THE INDIAN OCEAN THIS YEAR!!

Please feel free to share this post

Monkey Fist's Billy was due to row the Indian Ocean this year with a 4 man crew but, due to personal reasons, has had to drop out.

This means that there is now a seat available for the right person on board with a crew for which almost all of the preparations have already been done!!

The team plan to row from Western Australia to Mauritius, leaving around mid May and the crossing could take anything between 50 and 80 days.

This is an absolutely incredible opportunity for the right person.

You will have to be available for about 3 months (from start of May), be reasonably fit and work well within a team. More details about the project can be found at www.ior23.com

Please don't apply if you cannot commit!!

If you are interested please get in touch with Chris Cleghorn at
[email protected] or phone +61 448 971 361.

The teams CabbiesDoAtlanticRow and Atlantic Dragons - Adrian and Dan are 2 weeks into the Monkey Fist Adventures run event, the C-MAP Atlantic Dash

These guys left Lanzarote on the 3rd of January and are currently going through some of the same conditions that the TWAC crews experienced not long after they left., namely strong winds and big waves!! 🌊🌊

Only 2 miles separate the distance that they have covered in those 2 weeks and one crew is only 9 miles closer to Antigua than the other..... 😮😮

If you fancy following them just download the "YB races" app and search for C-MAP Atlantic Dash or you can see the tracker on the atlanticdash.com website if that's what floats your boat!! 😁

Good luck boys, only 2,000 miles left to go!! 😱😨

21/10/2022

Another update about the upcoming C-MAP Atlantic Dash and our long time friends Elliot Brown Watches being the official time keepers. ⏰️⌚️

When the inaugural Atlantic Dash starts we will no longer be sharing posts from the C-MAP Atlantic Dash page on here , so why not give the page a like and follow now so that you can follow the crews adventures as they cross the Atlantic!! 🌊🚣‍♂️

24/09/2022

As most of you already know, we have founded a new transatlantic rowing event, the recently renamed C-MAP Atlantic Dash. 🌊

We are chuffed to bits to announce that our old friends at C-MAP are the events Title sponsor!! 👏👏

We have worked with the amazing team at C-MAP on our past two projects. They share our absolute love of all things water and together we aspire to help other potential ocean rowers in the making feel that love too!! 😍

The Dash has been set up specifically to help people get out onto the water and experience crossing an ocean without the competitive element of being involved in a race 🏁

If you want to keep an eye on the first event taking place in Jan 2023 give the C-MAP Atlantic Dash page a follow. 👍

We are delighted to announce that C-MAP are the title sponsor for the new transatlantic ocean rowing event, the Atlantic Dash! 🥳

Monkey Fist Adventures have a longstanding relationship with the amazing team behind the electronic chart company, C-MAP.

Their involvement in our past challenges has come about through their desire to support projects that have been created to help others, especially those living with mental health issues. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things 🙌🏼

C-MAP are dedicated to being part of an event created to provide help and support to those who have a dream of rowing an ocean, especially those who may think that they are not capable of doing so.

All crews will be provided with the electronic charts needed to safely navigate the 3,200 miles of open ocean between Lanzarote and Antigua, and the C-MAP "Reveal" charts will be incorporated into the YB Tracking App to provide an incredible amount of detail as to where the rowers are for their friends and families watching back home 👀

To say that we are over the moon to be working with this team again would be an understatement! 😀

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the C-MAP Atlantic Dash!

Hello Everybody. It's been a while......

Would YOU like to row an ocean? Of course you would, and we may have an opportunity for you to do just that........ 🌊

We have a chap taking part in the Atlantic Dash 2023 who is potentially looking for a new crew member due to his rowing partner having to pull out for personal reasons. ☹

All the hard stuff getting everything ready to go has been done already, all he needs is someone to share the adventure with. 😊

You would have to be available from 15th of December this year and there are also some courses that you would have to take to be able to be part of the Dash, as well as time spent getting to know each other and training out on the water. 🚣‍♀️🚣‍♀️

This is an amazing opportunity for somebody out there. If you are interested and want to find out more please DM us and we will put you in touch .......

Enjoy the sunshine!! 🌞🌞

!!TRIGGER WARNING!! There is a picture of Rachel Salazar's bum in the photos. You have been warned....... ☠☠

Ocean rowing hurts. Fact.

Cuts, blisters and saltwater boils on your bum are just a few of the things that you can look forward to when rowing 12 hours a day on an unstable platform whilst getting covered in salt water. 💦💦

The best way to avoid these are by wearing some decent clothing, having the best possible diet and personal admin. 🤕🤕

There is no shower on an ocean rowing boat so the only way that you can keep yourself clean is by wiping down all those hard to reach areas with some baby wipes to remove as much of the salt water as possible as soon as you finish your shift on the oars. 🧼🧽

Wet wipes are notoriously bad for the environment with nearly everything on the market containing microplastics and taking a long time to biodegrade, which is savage bad for the ocean and all the little critters that live in it 🐟🐠🦈🐙

This is why we were extremely lucky to have our wet wipes donated to us by the lovely people at Kinder By Nature. These dudes not only gave us enough to try and keep all our nooks and crannies clean for the entire journey but their wet wipes are the only ones o the market to be completely plant based and compostable within 6 weeks, making them extremely harmonious with the planet!! 🌏

If you need to use wet wipes for anything, please give these guys a go as every little helps.......... 👍

Let's not forget that part of the reason Billy, John and Rachel set off to cross the Atlantic was to raise money for charity. 💲💲

One of those charities is the European Parkinson's Disease Association - EPDA, something that is especially close to Billy's heart after a good friend of his Alex Flynn - Keep Moving, My Fight Against Parkinson's was diagnosed at the age of Just 3️⃣6️⃣

Those of you who have been following the Monkey Fist challenges will already know that unfortunately Alex and Billy never got to row together, but thanks to Alex's influence Billy has taken two people living with Parkinson's across two oceans. 🌊🌊

Roger (AKA Atlantic Liz) joined the crew back in 2020 and took part in a research project with Oxford Brookes University to study the effects of diet and exercise on PD. Unfortunately Liz also had to leave the boat in Cape Verde due to sea sickness but as you will hear in the video the training and change of diet leading up to the row made a huge positive impact on her everyday life. 🏋️‍♀️💪🍆🥕🥒

We asked Liz to make this video back in April for Parkinson's awareness month. Unfortunately people with Parkinson's have to live with the condition 12 months of the year, not just during awareness month when there is a lot of focus in the media. 🎤📻📺

Because of this we decided to wait until now to release it so that at least a tiny bit of focus on PD will carry on outside of awareness month........... 📢🔊

Old salty sea dogs used to use celestial bodies to navigate by when sailing the 7 seas... 🌞🌛✨

The video below shows the sun setting on the starboard side of the boat. As we know that the sun sets in the West we can tell from the suns position relative to Velocity that the boat is travelling in a generally southerly direction. ⬇

While John Haskell and Billy are both certainly old and indeed all three crew were incredibly salty by the end of the crossing, they did not have to rely on old salty sea dog means of navigation 🧭

Simrad Yachting very kindly donated all of our electrical navigation equipment and this not only gave us information about our exact location but lots of other important information such as the direction that the boat was heading, what our course over the ground was, the speed we were travelling, the bearing we needed to take to get to whatever destination we had chosen etc 🔢

All of this info could then be relayed to our autohelm system which meant that the steering was taken care of automatically meaning we could concentrate solely on the rowing. 🚣‍♀️

We have quite a few videos talking about all the bits of kit on the boat and how we used them. They are a little bit geeky but interesting to anyone who may fancy taking on a row themselves in the future. We will post these over the next few weeks but for the non geeks out there here is a very pretty video instead. Enjoy!!

Rachel Salazar was smart enough to bring along 3 small bottles of bubbly to celebrate whatever event we thought needed celebrating during the row.... 🍾🍾🍾

It turned out that the event we celebrated was the fact that Rachel actually remembered that she had 3 bottles of bubbly stored on the boat. As events to celebrate go, it was a pretty good one 🥳

This photo also demonstrates John Haskell ability to misunderstand a very simple sentence. When Billy said "Soaked Back Fountain" his mind immediately translated that to "show me your Brokeback mountain" ⛰

For those of you who know John Haskell and Rachel Salazar you will already know how difficult it is to get them to stop talking...... 😁

The crew did not get that many spectacular sunrises or sunsets during their crossing which made this one even more special. 🌅

They were only a few days away from Cape Verde when the best sunset of the crossing made an appearance and you can see from the photos just how special it was. All 3 of the crew spent some time together to just be in the moment and take in one of natures most incredible displays. 🥰

Rachel had been stuck in the cabin for around 12 days by this point and had not managed to keep down any solid food for even longer but she still managed to get up and enjoy the view. 💪

A photo can never capture how amazing a sunset can be but we think that the look on John and Rachels face says it all.......

We have been pretty crap at updating you all as to what has been going on with us since leaving Cape Verde and we are really sorry!

The main thing to let you all know is that after a few weeks of being back on dry land Rachel has now made a full recovery and although it is unlikely that she will ever set foot in an Ocean rowing boat again there were definitely memories made during the crossing that will last a life time.... 🌊🐬🐳

Billy and John stayed on a little longer in Cape Verde to make sure that the boat was packed into a container to be shipped home and then they too headed back to the UK. ✈️

From there the crew spread out a little. Rachel went to Spain and is now in Croatia, John is in the Bahamas with his daughter and Billy spent a couple of weeks in Antigua talking to the sponsors over there and going over plans for the Dash event due to take place in January 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣3️⃣

Velocity finally returned home to Avon Marina where she will now be getting ready for her next Atlantic crossing. 🚣🌊

We do have a lot more footage to show you as soon as the crew have managed to upload it all after returning back to the UK.

In the meantime we would like to thank everybody who followed the crews journey and donated to the two charities. ❤️

As the rowing boat is at sea, there are various methods of communication. If the crew know the phone number of a recipient then they can call anywhere in the world...but if a ship is bearing down on them they are unlikely to know that ships sat phone number, so this is where the Simrad Yachting VHF radio comes into play. 📻

Much like the CB radios off the 80s and films about truck drivers, these handy gadgets allow the team to talk to anyone within range that also has a vhf onboard. 🗣️

They can only reach 'line of sight', the sight being the top of their radio mast, which on this boat is quite long. However that still means the range is quite low, only a few miles (dependent on the height of the boat they are radioing). 🛳️

There should ALWAYS be someone manning the VHF radio on another vessel, but as Billy explains here, they didn't have much success raising people on the radio on the couple of occasions they tried to make contact on this trip. Perhaps it was John's welsh accent?! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿😂

Yesterday we mentioned that the team are unsupported at sea and need to carry everything with them. This prompts the question - what would happen in an emergency?! 🤔

The team use a couple of solutions for this from McMurdo aka

Firstly they have an EPIRB - that is an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon. In it's simplest form, this is the big red button you can press when all else fails and you're in real danger. As Billy explains this sends a signal to the coastguard and then they'll contact the nearest vessels to your position to mount a rescue. 🚨

All the crew members also have an Personal Life Beacon (PLB). The PLB works in a similar way to the EPIRB, but is a smaller version that the rowers wear at all times. This means that if they become separated from the boat and can't get back then they can activate it and the coastguard can request a boat to go to the position of the person rather than the vessel. 🙋‍♀️

Clever kit by a very clever company - for more information check out https://www.seasofsolutions.com/ 🌐

When the team are at sea there is no support. 😯

There are no support boats, they're normally out of helicopter range, and so they need to make sure that they have everything they could need with them, as there are no handy shops on the way to buy items! 🏪

For the same reason, for their most important kit, they need to have back ups, or at least more than one way to skin that particular cat. 🐈‍⬛

Their steering, as Billy explains, is one such important piece of kit that has several back ups. Predominantly it is a large rudder powered by a hydraulic ram that is connected to the team's clever Simrad Yachting chart plotter. That way they can simply put in their desired destination and then the computers control the steering. If that connection fails then the ram can be operated manually via a small metal steering wheel on deck. And if that fails, the crew can connect lines to either side of the rudder and control the steering by pulling the lines, a little like a box cart steering. ☸️

Thankfully this is a really solid steering system which has served the team well for several expeditions and so they've just been able to pop a destination into the system and then concentrate on the rowing bit! 🚣‍♂️

It's World Parkinson's Day - and we have a simple message: There is NO cure for Parkinson's.

Not enought people realise that. There are treatments that can make sufferers more comfortable, and that can perhaps slow the onset - but as of this day, 11th April 2022...there is no cure.

Donate today to help with the research to find that cure, so that people will one day say "I used to have Parkinson's".

Whilst a rowing boat by it's very nature, is human powered...there is a requirement for a good chunk of electricity on board. ⚡

Everything from running the watermaker, to powering their navigation lights, to charging their phones so they can listen to music. 📲

You'd need a really long cable to plug the boat into the mains the whole way across, so instead they predominantly use solar power. ☀️

Over the years Billy and the team have used several types of solar power, but these panels by MIPV Solar for mobile applications have proven to be the best of the best! 💪

Normally flexible solar panels like these create LESS power than rigid panels - but these ones make more than any of the rigid panels the team have used in the past, and they're extremely durable, having survived being hit by another boat on the last expedition, as Billy explains! 💥
