As you may be thinking about decorating for this weekend, a reminder to please think about wildlife when doing so.

It has become popular to 'decorate' hedges with these fake cobwebs. Tragically wildlife can easily become entangled in this and, like this poor woodpecker, lose their lives :(

Please make sure any decorations you use this Halloween are wildlife friendly.

Our first swallows have now started to arrive, a little later than in previous years. Unfortunately, their nest had collapsed and they were found next to two deceased siblings. They were left up high for a little while in hopes the parents would return but sadly they did not return, so we had to make the decision to bring them into our care.

They are both very healthy and will stay with us for a while until they are ready for release to take their big migratory journey to Africa in early autumn.

We have just recently completed the construction of some new species specific outside enclosures. These enclosures will house this year's batch of swifts, swallows and house martins. They have been designed to closely replicate the enrichment and nesting behaviours these unique birds may experience in their natural habitats. These birds are incredibly special and are adapted to life ‘on the wing’ so it is vital they are fit and healthy and equipped with as many of the necessary skills they need to survive in the wild.

It's Hedgehog Awareness Week, why not sponsor a Hedgehog in our care. By sponsoring a hedgehog for just £30 per year, you could help us to care for hedgehog casualties and provide them with around the clock care, food and safe shelter to get them healthy for release. With every sponsorship you have the choice of a special gift and a certificate of sponsorship.

What a great gift for a friend or family member or maybe just a gift for yourself.

2 Hedgehog Walkway Signs 23/04/2022

2 Hedgehog Walkway Signs The biggest issue that hedgehogs face is not having the space to find a mate/forage for food. It is now thought that the main reason that hedgehogs are declining is that we are making our gardens more secure with fencing and walls, reducing the amount of territory available to them. ‼️IMPORTANT BIRD FLU UPDATE ‼️

This winter season has been a hard one for us here at Brent lodge. For the first time in our 50 year history, we had to turn away birds at the hospital due to the risk of Avian Influenza in the UK. With many birds on site recovering from illness at the time of the outbreak, at first, we were incredibly cautious with new admissions. And then came a positive case just 3 miles away from us. We had to make the difficult decision to stop any new avian admissions to protect our existing patients.

Just one positive case on site would not only mean the euthanasia of all of the current avian species on site but sadly it could mean the forced closure of Brent Lodge for up to 9 months meaning we would not be able to help ANY animals.

We are pleased to inform everyone that we will now be taking certain bird species into our care once again. We are still having to be extremely cautious as there are still new cases of Avian Influenza being reported and several wildlife hospitals across the UK have sadly had positive cases, resulting in the euthanasia of all the birds on their site and temporarily closure of their entire facilities.

The birds we will sadly NOT be able to accept onto site until further notice are
- Swans and Geese
- Adult duck
- Adult waders (coots/moorhens etc) and adult Herons/Egrets
- Buzzards and Kites
- Adult Gulls
- Adult Corvids and
- Adult pheasants/game birds

These birds are all still considered high risk. We do however encourage all members of the public to phone us if they come across ANY sick/injured birds (even the ones mentioned above) and we will do all we can to ensure they receive the help they need through your vet. We must stress that you should not touch these birds (unless in immediate danger) before calling for advice. If you do need to handle the bird, wear disposable gloves and a face covering if you can. We are urgently requesting that you do not bring these birds onto our site, as it could risk the lives of the recovering birds in our care.

This has been an extraordinarily difficult and distressing time for our staff during which we have had to make many equally difficult and distressing decisions trying to balance protecting our existing patients against whether we can safely accept new ones. We are so grateful for the overwhelmingly positive level of understanding we have received during some of these very difficult phone calls. We have all been touched by people’s kindness, understanding and appreciation.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have a bird or any wild animal in need. We will always do our best to assist you. 01243-641672 opt 1. Thank you again for your support and understanding.

Have a Foxy Friday! Thank you to AlphaPet Veterinary Clinics for their assistance with this poor fox. He was brought to AlphaPet by a local wildlife rescue to be treated for mange. Whilst he was with them they noticed that he wasn't eating properly. Upon further examination, he had a couple of problem teeth, which they removed. He is now eating much better and in our care to prepare for his release :) 🦊 📸 AlphaPet

Our new treatment room will be a huge asset to us as we treat patients like these. With your support we can implement an onsite wildlife veterinary nurse and purchase vital resources and equipment so we can provide a veterinary diagnosis service, carry out basic procedures and x-ray patients. We aim to assist wildlife casualties admitted from the public, RSPCA inspectors, Wildlife Police Officers and Veterinary Clinics.

With successful treatment and rehabilitation, we will release hundreds of healthy wild animals back to their natural habitats, increase local biodiversity and ensure local habitats continue to thrive with healthy wildlife.

This is a huge milestone for the charity and will make a real and lasting difference to wildlife in our care - your contribution will make a big impact. Whether you donate £5 or £50. Every little bit helps. Thank you for your support.

Please donate here. Thank you!!

This beautiful rabbit was found by the side of the road after an assumed Road traffic collision. He was checked over by our vets and was given a course of pain relief and anti inflammatory. He is eating and drinking well. We have our fingers crossed for a full recovery.
