Hi everybody šŸŒ»

Jennifer and I are moving to Vancouver, Canada in September. The mountains are calling. Very excited!

In the meantime, I'm looking to make the transition to working remotely/online. Currently I manage four health clubs in London and I have years of physical coaching and management experience.

I'm primarily looking for roles in the health and fitness sector where I have most experience, but I'm open to trying something new if the role is interesting.

If you know of any opportunities and want more info about my experience and skills drop me a message šŸ˜

World Kindness Day - 13th November

World Kindness Day is all about being kind to ourselves, those around us, all living creatures and our planet.

Acts of kindness can bring us together and have the capacity to build connections between people and communities and the natural world. We can overcome differences by being kind to one another and kindness is a universal language that everybody understands.

Buddha said: "Overcome anger through kindness, wickedness through goodness, selfishness through charity, and falsehood through truthfulness."

Start by being kind to yourself and radiate that kindness outwards and see what happens.

Happy World Kindness Day!

Apple Day is an annual celebration of apples and orchards, usually falling on 21 October and mainly in the United Kingdom.

Apple Day was initiated by Common Ground on 21 October 1990 at an event in Covent Garden, London and they describe it as "...a way of celebrating and demonstrating that variety and richness matter to a locality and that it is possible to effect change in your place. Common Ground has used the apple as a symbol of the physical, cultural and genetic diversity we should not let slip away."

So enjoy a healthy apple today and introduce more fresh fruit and vegetables into your diet.

The apple, that grows all over the planet, can be a symbol of celebrating our diversity in the world to find common ground between everybody! šŸ˜

Anapanasati Day - Buddhist

Anapanasati means mindful breathing, and is a Buddhist meditation taught by Gautama Buddha to help bring enlightenment, knowledge and liberation, among many other health benefits.

This special day is also one in which practitioners of Buddhism can receive constructive criticism about their faults and progress to help in purifying themselves. A monk (Bhikkhu) or lay person has to be open to any criticism about their behaviour in order to win their respect and for them to learn and make progress.

Letā€™s all take time out today to focus on breathing deeply and slowly, to self-reflect and to listen and share openly with others so we can each learn and make inner progress.

To name but a few, Intuitive Fitness Coaching is informed and influenced by Caroline Myss, Dr Peter Levineā€™s Somatic Experiencing, Wim Hof, Louise Hay, Bessel Van Der Kolk, Sadhguru, yoga tai chi, dance, and meditation practises.

The way we physically move and what physical activities we are attracted to is literally communicating to us what emotional and mental state we are in. Our health, aches and pains, sleep patterns, and hormonal state is biological journal of what is happening in our body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

IFC shows you how to intuitively respond to this communication from your body and to coach you in new, healthier movement and activities to release stubborn recurring tensions, transform your health and personal development through life.

Life experiences imprint as sensory interactions in the mind and body. Experiences can be joyful or traumatic and mind and body react according to survival needs - Fight-Flight-Freeze-Avoid. The body and mind will store all experiences as memories, and potentially as repetitive tensions (or trapped energy) until safely released. Over time these body-mind (autonomic) memories can create illnesses and other problems within us.

With the IFC method, these traumas, tensions, and illnesses can be eased, released and even resolved. IFC gives you a full health assessment and physical movement review, builds a detailed body map of your current physical habits and emotional and mental state, and teaches movements to regenerate long-term effectives health routines.

Often the conscious mind cannot put into words what is happening with the health of the brain, emotions and body. Fortunately for us, the body can communicate exactly what we need to know if we learn how to understand its subtle language.

What will your body teach you today?

How to Manage Anxiety Without Medication 23/08/2021

How to manage anxiety without medication šŸ˜Ž Great practical piece by Jennifer Tomomitsu from The Master In You šŸ‘šŸ¼

How to Manage Anxiety Without Medication Feeling less fear is not only achievable, but it can be done without popping pills.

About 16/05/2021

A little bit about me and how and why I came to develop the Intuitive Fitness Coaching method:

I'm Max and I have always loved anything and everything to do with body movement and health. I have worked in the health and wellness sector for nearly twenty years. Up to my mid-30s I was a chronic, often obsessive, over-exerciser. Weight training, calisthenics, yoga, long-distance running, cycling, Karate, you name it ā€” I was doing it incessantly. Sometimes I was doing ten or more intense, prolonged sessions per week combined with cycling around the city, teaching fitness classes, my full-time job, and a very hedonistic life. This was a big motivating factor in my decision to go into personal training. But at a certain point in my mid-30s I had the classic Eureka moment and learnt that this constant self-battery was my way of coping and overriding unresolved trauma and emotional issues -- what some psychologists refer to as ā€˜body numbingā€™ or ā€˜body armouringā€™. My body started to teach me some brutal lessons.

Over time, I developed chronic pains, muscles imbalances and tensions, misaligned vertebra, inflexibility, sensory numbness, fatigue, vestibular problems. Thankfully, my body woke me up and started to make me consciously aware of masked mental-emotional issues by revealing these ailments and my unconscious physical habits. In time, I learned that by continually resolving my mental-emotional issues, living more holistically, performing certain physical movements, and using my intuition, it can help ease the underlying causes to many problems. And so, I consciously set about healing them, one by one, and mending my broken body, piece by piece. I made notes of good mind-body habits that worked for me and built them into my daily routine. In the process my whole health improved dramatically.

What I've Been Inspired By:
As I was going through my own process of self-healing, I noticed similar physical-mental patterns in my clients, friends, family, acquaintances, peopleā€™s experiences I read about, and in the world around me. At university, I majored in literature and history and love reading and research, so I studied as much as I could about the mind-body link and was hooked on how thoughts and emotions directly affect all aspects of health.

The use of body sensations to release emotions and memories by clinical psychologist Peter Levine in his Somatic Experiencing approach also fascinated me. I had personally experienced this phenomenon by moving and stretching in certain ways. Bessel van der Kolk, in his book on trauma The Body Keeps The Score, was another revelation on the depths of the mind-body link. Caroline Myss, in her book The Anatomy of Spirit, Louise Hay in her book You Can Heal Your Life, and my study of Buddhist texts and meditation, added the spiritual dimension to my approach. A method that I could use to help others was gradually emerging.

Why I Walked Away from Traditional Personal Training:
It became very clear to me that I had been doing a disservice to my personal training clients up to that point. Wanting to lose weight or gain muscle or look a certain way was not the real problem and using external means to achieve such aims was an illusion. The solution had to start inside, beginning with the body and emotions. The mind would follow, and the spirit was clearly the source of power. I found that if we donā€™t deal with our emotional problems first then we would continue to comfort eat or feel low self-worth or pump iron to ā€˜lookā€™ good or go on ridiculous diets to starve ourselves down to the ā€˜perfect weightā€™.

So, as frustrating as this sounds, the real force behind weight gain and loss is our thoughts and emotions. They will always catch up with us no matter how fast we run on the treadmill or how heavy the dumbbells are that we use. And when an emotional bump in the road occurs, those emotions will kick us back to square one and pile the weight back on. Exercising and dieting without having solved emotional problems first locks us into a heart-breaking cyclical waste of time.

And the industry, myself included, until now, encourages all of this. Recurring weight problems and distorted self-image sells gym memberships and personal training. Fact. And I had been teaching all the wrong things and answering all the wrong questions for my clients. It was like a doctor or psychologist who gives an incorrect diagnosis and prescribes a pill for an illness the patient does not actually have. I quit personal training and completely changed my approach. I had to find a way to disrupt the unhealthy mind-body cycle and provide a real solution to jolt it into a healthier relationship.

The Current Approach:
I decided to take everything I had learned as a trainer and combine it with my personal experience and the scientific knowledge and spiritual teachings I had been practising. Over the years, this led to the development of a new coaching method. Drawing from decades of study, teaching multi-disciplinary exercise and taking inspiration from my experience of yoga, Tai Chi, calisthenics, martial arts, meditation and more, I created a body process that is now the Intuitive Fitness Coaching method.

I am a great believer in journeying inwards to transform from the inside out and I bring this philosophy to the Intuitive Fitness Coaching approach. My passion and purpose are to help people achieve a happy, healthy and relaxed mind, body and spirit and this method is the vehicle I use to achieve that.

Why Making the Best Life Decisions Starts with Listening to Your Gut 12/03/2021

Great little piece on following your gut and intuition in life:

Repost from The Master In You:

"How often do you listen to your gut in daily life? šŸ™‚

While we often ā€˜thinkā€™ about the best approach, we donā€™t always ā€˜feelā€™ the advice from our gut. However, when you reduce reliance on your brain and shift towards your gut, you begin to hone and strengthen your intuition. But it requires trust in yourself and not giving in to the fear that the mind can create.

Below are three ways to listen to your gut and how they can help you make better life decisions. ā¤"

As a physical coach I help myself & others ease tensions & encourage movements & activities that have a positive impact on the whole of the person, not just the body.

It's a cyclical process with the mind triggering emotions triggering hormones triggering movements in the body & vice-versa. Each element plays its part & after a certain amount of time replaying these cyclical habits it becomes difficult to pin point the original trigger.

That's where physical movements & our body can help to reveal underlying root causes to problems & then we can set about solving them. More often than not our problems will be a combination of mental, emotional, hormonal, physical & spiritual factors.

This is great news because that means there is an abundance of information available inside each of us to help resolve illness, aches & pains, poor sleep, stress, troublesome thoughts & more. Our intuition & body show us that everything has a solution šŸ˜šŸ‘

Intuitive Fitness Journal #2

I see lots of discussion about correct posture & exercise technique.

All bodies vary. Some postures & movements are easier for some people than others. Teachers will say our foot must be like so in this posture or squat technique is this or donā€™t wing the scapular there, etc, etc. But our bodies have entirely different lever ratios, weight, flexibility, strength, width, endurance, as well as mental-emotional states. We know our own body better than anybody else and can experiment within its capabilities, as long as we are careful. Do your best with what you have.

To expect one person to move identically to another is impossible. Taking inspiration from how beautifully somebody moves is wonderful but unfavourable & unrealistic comparison won't help. As long as we arenā€™t doing any potentially dangerous manoeuvres we will always move differently to everybody else. And that's perfectly fine. When moving safely there is no right or wrong. Enjoy each movement from where you are.

We can only resemble others as we move. And that's a good thing because then we can enjoy more variety. Trying to move or look exactly like other people is an unrealistic standard. There isn't one correct way of moving that fits all. Focus less attention on perfecting the appearance and more on how good each movement feels.

So close your eyes during each movement & truly feel what your own body is doing & what it intuitively feels capable of. Make no comparisons with yourself & other people. Celebrate your individual capabilities with each other. Respect what state your body is currently in & gently & gradually improve it. Consistent motion will eventually ease all tensions and help you feel great. That, after all, is what it's all about.

Intuitive Fitness Journal #1

It took me years of self-reflection & a process of elimination to figure out that, in part, the cause & severity of my migraines, neck & shoulder pain, & comfort eating, was a result of self-criticism, self-doubts, thinking I had to do things perfectly & not valuing & appreciating who & where I am. It was also connected to my pitta dosha & the hot element comfort food I was eating in my behavioural cycle of self-demands, piling unrealistic expectations onto myself, eventual overwhelm followed by instant gratification.

Rinse & repeat for days on end. My shoulder & neck pains would resurface. My body temperature kept going up. I would over-exercise to numb myself. The rate of thoughts or what I like to call 'mindy-ness' would go into overdrive. It would all just snowball. Then boom came the crushing migraine a few days later & I could barely move from pain & nausea. For years & years this went on, getting worse.

To heal this I had to break the repetitive cycle. By disrupting each element adding to the problem, I worked on having less self-criticism, less self-doubts, appreciating where & who I am, easing expectations, enjoying my life journey & stretching out my neck & shoulders, massaging them regularly, cutting out over-heating & exhausting exercise, & reducing 'heaty' comfort food. Not all at once. This took months of gradual introduction of new habits & I'm still a work in progress. But I had to start somewhere. Step-by-step. So far so good. The migraines haven't come back yet :-)

Next time you have troublesome thought-emotions pay attention to what you feel in the body. Sensations, aches & pains, pleasures, being off balance, dizziness, hormones, urges & suchlike. Listen to what the body is trying to communicate to you. Allow all thoughts, emotions & sensations to do as they please. Stretch out and massage the body & particularly those problem areas that arise during these episodes. You will be able to release the systemic problem holistically.

Photos from Intuitive Fitness Coaching's post 19/01/2021

From an early age I knew intuitively that my body has massive hidden reserves of energy. Later I learned that this energy is called 'Chi' or 'prana' and that with the right kind of movements and inner attitude this energy source is practically inexhaustible. I found I can boost it at any time I want by doing various types of physical movements, dancing, yoga, Tai chi, meditation, walking, climbing trees and mountains, running, laughing. The list is endless and we all have our own personal preferences of course.

So not a day goes by without me dancing, walking, moving my body and any other body activities that make me happy. Anything to stir up the energy within me. With or without music, it doesn't matter. No demands other than to feel good, boost my energy and blood flow, and to just have fun.

More often than not I'm just messing around and experimenting with silly dances that would look ridiculous outside my living room. Or trying new balance postures and falling over in the process. Trying new stretches. New weird movements. I often look like an untrained contemporary performance dancer crossed with a chimpanzee at feeding time.

The point is I like to keep moving and using my body to boost positive Chi, generating feelings of joy and keeping my energy levels up. Anything that I like to do for movement helps, as long as it is positively motivated and not driven by self-demands or self-judgement. This keeps me healthy.

Do some physical activities today, and regularly, that you really want to do and not what you think you 'should' do. Take all demands off yourself while doing them. Remove all expectations of time, skill and effort.

Just move, smile, enjoy.

Namaste šŸ˜šŸ™
