Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day. This day focuses on digital access and inclusion for over 1 billion people around the world that have a disability or impairment.

Here in the UK, Public Sector Bodies have to legally comply with accessibility legislation which defines that, amongst many other requirements, they need to make their websites accessible for everyone in line with the WCAG 2.1 guidelines.

We can see existing legislation eventually changing to ensure that all businesses follow internationally recognised accessibility guidelines.

But more importantly, we know that making a website accessible, actually helps every user to have a better experience, not just those with a disability.

A is for…Accessibility

Making sure your website is accessible to all users should be high on your agenda for 2022.

Worcestershire County Council have developed a handy framework called SCLUPT to help create websites and information that is accessible:

- STRUCTURE: use headings and styles to structure your website
- COLOUR & CONTRAST: Consider the contrast of colours between backgrounds and text
- USE OF IMAGES: Use alternative text with images to describe what the image is
- LINKS: Always describe your link. Don’t use ‘click here’
- PLAIN ENGLISH: Use uncomplicated language with no jargon
- TABLE STRUCTURE: when using tables keep them simple without merged or split cells
