It's so important to get the proper curve in the lower part of the spine: imagine a thick spring as your spine with a bowling ball sitting on top of it (your head). If the spring had a fault in it, it wouldn't be able to support the bowling ball properly. This is bad posture.
Did you also know that bad posture can also cause issues in your feet and ankles?
If you stand like you do normally, how do you feel the weight in your feet? Do you feel like most of your weight is on the toes? A study (Breul, 2006), suggests that when standing normally, 60% of your weight should be on the heels. When there's too much weight on the toes, it affects the lower half of your body and can result in complications and a visit to the podiatrist.
Now try moving your shoulders and head back. Do you feel your weight shifting to the heels better?
Understanding where your weight is distributed in your feet is really important, especially in sports like golf and boxing but even more to anyone who wants to keep their body healthy.
The best way to know if you have sciatica is thinking about the type of pain you have.
Electrical, burning, pulsing going down one or both legs. These can describe the sciatica pain. It can be along with a numb feeling, sometimes going below your knee and even into the sole of your foot.
The pain you're feeling in your legs is likely coming from higher up. It can be as simple as a tight muscle or can be from an accident where there's been movement in your lower back (if it's been a recent injury and you've lost any bladder control or have numbness in your groin, treat it as an emergency as it could be cauda aquina).
If you feel like you need to be seen, we can quickly identify the location and offer treatments that can help. By taking the pressure away from the affected areas, this often reduces the sciatica pain and we can get control of the situation.
The right chiropractor will know exactly the correct amount of force to apply and the appropriate angles at which to put these forces. Everything we do will only help...it's your body that does the healing!

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body.
As well as widespread pain, other symptoms of fibromyalgia include increased sensitivity to pain
and muscle stiffness, difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep, which can make you feel very tired, problems with mental processes (known as "fibro-fog"), headaches, feelings of frustration and low mood
It's as important to check exactly what the pain ISN'T, as it is to work out what the pain IS. It's very common to think ALL your pain is "just the fibromyalgia" when this probably isn't true.
With a full consultation and gentle adjusting, it's possible to take away the pain that isn't fibromyalgia. Once you start learning more about how your body functions, we can work together to get a handle on your non-fibromyalgia symptoms.
Then, the fibromyalgia flare-ups can be isolated and treated independently.
Over 10 million people in the UK have arthritis (NHS Inform).
Most likely found in people over 40, it can also occur at any age as a result of injury, or can be linked with other joint related injuries such as gout.
Most commonly seen in the hands, spine, knees and hips, osteoarthritis (the most common) begins when the cartlidge lining starts to roughen and thin out. The tendons and ligaments then need to work harder. This then causes swelling and the formation of bony 'spurs' called osteophytes.
This is where the pain and stiffness you're experiencing come from.

When I start feeling aches and pains, do I apply heat or ice?
This is a question I get asked a lot, and it can be broken down into these categories:
ACUTE INJURIES (LESS THAN 6 WEEKS OLD)
Do not use heat on acute injuries as the extra heat can increase the inflammation and even delay the healing process. Use ice as it will constrict the blood vessels which numbs pain, relieves inflammation and limits the bruising.
CHRONIC INJURIES (MORE THAN 6 WEEKS OLD)
Use heat. This will increase the blood flow, relax tight muscles and relieve aching joints that aren't moving properly.
MUSCLE STRAINS AND JOINT SPRAINS
Use a combination of ice and heat. Start off with ice to numb the pain and after any inflammation goes down switch to heat which will help relieve any muscle stiffness at the injury site.
HEADACHES
We have all had headaches. Ice soothes the throbbing pain and a warm heat wrap will relax the muscles in the back of the neck.

Tommy here has been a more complex case. As happy as he looks he's in a lot of pain!
Working through his hospital case history, x-rays and using the consultation to problem solve, we found restrictions in his lower thoracic and upper lumbar regions. Whilst we need to wait for further tests and imaging to ensure it's safe to work on, we were able to release the muscles throughout the hip and lower back (psoas, ql, tfl, paraspinals etc.) to give him maximum comfort in the meantime.
More postural advice, rebalancing of the pelvis and manipulating the areas of the spine that it's safe to do so will hopefully get him through until we get to the root of the problem.
