2022 'Higham Pink' Single Estate English Rosé, Higham Vineyard, Suffolk

Higham Vineyard sits on the north side of the Stour Valley in Suffolk and is owned by David Alston. David took on this wonderful site in 2019 and has since been managing the vineyard personally - management that resulted in a most impressive début vintage last year.

The scenic village of Higham is just three miles from our offices in Constable Country where in 1804 it became the subject of a painting by the great artist himself. The south-facing view of Higham from the vineyard remains much like what John Constable captured on canvas over two centuries ago.

Under the guidance of a New Zealand-trained winemaker of strong pedigree, 'Higham Pink' is made from the hand-tended, single-estate pinot noir that thrives on the valley's rich, flinty soils. The result is a crisp, delicate, off-dry cuvée to so deliciously exemplify the sheer quality England now achieves in the production of rosé wines.

2021 Mas De Cadenet 'Grande Garde' Rosé, Cotes-De-Provence

"...the top cuvée from the Negrels' Mas de Cadenet estate. An organic, oak-fermented and oak-aged blend of 70 per cent Grenache and 30 per cent Syrah, its perfectly structured and gratifyingly complex, with notes of quince, redcurrant, pear, herbs, spice and even liquorice. This is rosé for grown-ups, although Im not sure that Mrs R and I gave it quite the respect it deserves, draining it in a flash."

2021 Prisma Gran Chardonnay, Penedo Borges, Mendoza

"The 2021 Chardonnay Gran Prisma from Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, was 15% aged for six months in used barrels. Yellowy green in the glass. The nose presents notes of apple and creamed corn with a hint of oak. Broad and creamy with integrated freshness, the volume and energy build in the center of the mouth. A classical wine of balance and harmony. Drink to 2026"

2019 Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG, Fattoria Le Pupille

Savour another side La Bella Toscana.. In the warm, wonderful, coastal appellation of Maremma, Fattoria Le Pupille produce what many consider to be the finest cuvées of the region - where Chianti’s ‘sangiovese’ is better known as ‘morellino’. Blend it with cabernet sauvignon as Fattoria do and you’re now in ‘Super Tuscan’ territory. Mature this in oak for a full 15 months and you get all the opulence their ‘Riserva’ has to offer.

2022 Rosé 'Coeur de Cuvée', Domaine de la Jasse, Languedoc

Move over, Provence. Domaine de la Jasse shows with another vintage the sheer prowess of the Languedoc for making supreme southern French rosé. That is to say luminous, pale-hued rosé wines that are elegant, refreshing, precise. Their 2022 Coeur de Cuvée is case and point: where soft, slow pressing of grenache and syrah extracts only the juice in the fruit’s core, giving the wine its exquisite delicacy and fine balance of natural freshness and depth of flavour.

2022 Macon Uchizy, Domaine Talmard

The Talmard family have once again produced a beautifully weighted, balanced wine; fruit-forward in style and deliciously moreish. Favouring slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks to retain a purity of fruit, they ensure also the wine stays on its lees for a few extra months to imbue a greater depth of flavour and delicate texture in the palate. No oak is used.

The nose is one of pronounced citrus, melon and peach, with a backdrop of delicate tropical fruit. The palate is fresh and zesty with soft, fleshy white stone fruit, citrus and melon, leading to a delicately textured, lengthy finish.

Although Talmard's Mâcon Uchizy is an indisputable midweek essential, it is also a well worthy partner to finer dining, and one to improve beautifully in bottle over 18-24months.

The 2016 vintage for the Margaux region has been very highly acclaimed, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate rating it a near perfect score of 97/100 points, you have to head back to 2009 to find a Margaux vintage considered of equal quality.

Those earthy, forest-floor aromas, that Margaux lovers savour, are already present, accompanied by dark-berry fruit a herbaceous character and warming, cedar and cigar box aromas from time resting in fine French oak.
As expected of the 2016 vintage the palate is deeply concentrated at this early stage, yet intensely rewarding with its signature core of dark forest fruit, plums currents, sweet spice and a veil of warming cedar wood. It's medium-bodied, beautifully balanced with great intensity on the lengthy finish.

2021 Pouilly-Fuissé 'Marie Antoinette', Famille Vincent

From the very south of the Mâconnais Famille Vincent's Pouilly-Fuissé is an elegant wine that has been carefully fermented and matured in fine, older French oak barrel whilst preserving its purity of fruit. Extended aging on lees has added a gentle creaminess and texture, as well as delicate toasty, biscuity character on the nose.

2021 Rock Angel is produced in small volumes from carefully chosen vineyards within the Château d'Esclans portfolio, and sits quietly in the celebrity-like shadow of its louder, big brother Whispering Angel. Yet Rock Angel is the pinnacle of fine rosé, offering greater complexity and richness.

About the producer:
Bruno Clair keeps his own company: since 1979, his eponymous Domaine has been redefining the level of quality that can be expected of Marsannay whilst producing other highly sought-after Côte-de-Nuits cuvées in a total of 9 appellations. These include Clos-St-Jacques, Vosne Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny. Clair's red winemaking expertise clearly translates very well indeed to white wine making - En la Rue de Vergy is fermented and aged in foudres and barriques (20% new) and is produced with minimal intervention.

2021 Estate Reserve Chardonnay, Glenelly Estate, Stellenbosch
For here is one bold, full-bodied, Burgundy-beater and serious glass of white, which, at a whisker under £18/bottle, strongly warrants a place in any wine enthusiast's cellar.

2020 ‘Ortale’ Greco di Tufo DOCG, Cantine di Marzo, Campania.

"The 2020 Cantine di Marzo ‘Vigna Ortale’ Greco di Tufo Riserva is a single vineyard wine of which fewer than 300 cases were made. The Marzo family first produced wine here in 1647 and the winery – the oldest in Campania – remains in the hands of their descendants, the di Somma family. Made from the first pressing of 100 per cent Greco, the wine is steel-fermented, aged for nine months in tank and 12 months in bottle. It’s delightfully complex, being honeyed yet salty-savoury too."

We paired ours with locally caught pan fried sole, tomato, black olive and oregano salsa served with a fennel and orange salad.

Is the 2018 stylistically similar and even better than the 2016? Too close to call - both were very successful merlot vintages.

With vineyards across Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault and Santenay; Jean-Marc is well placed for producing exceptional wines, the consistent quality and value of which have deservedly accrued a loyal following.

As for the 2017 vintage, it triumphed in Burgundy. From his vineyards in Santenay, Jean-Marc produced then a pinot noir that is now really showing: smoky nuances on the nose in tandem with red-berry fruit and a rich, savouriness on the palate that full of delight.
