Over the past year, we have been working with our Donegal partners ‘Rathmullan the Way Forward’ to deliver a stream of initiatives to support social innovation amongst our communities. From the establishment of a Makers Market in Rathmullan, an International Women’s Day showcase event in Coleraine and community volunteering days, to the development of digital community hubs and the delivery of 1-to-1 mentoring for community groups; this pilot project has truly made a difference in day-to-day lives. This project is supported by the International Fund for Ireland, under the Communities in Partnership Programme. Brand new business ❗️ We were in absolute bliss this afternoon 👌 as we visited a new business in the Causeway area - Peatlands 😍🌱🌳 Husband and wife Emma & Pete Hathaway have made big life changes to develop and pursue this business venture. Located just outside Ballybogey (only 15 minutes from the Giants Causeway) stand two beautiful shepherd’s huts ‘Curlew’ and ‘Sundew’. Named after the surrounding peatlands that are such a unique and important part of our environmental & cultural heritage (including the Garry Bog National Nature Reserve, right on the doorstep) the huts were designed, built and finished to the highest of craftmanship standards 💯 Each hut is secluded within a stunning garden and woodland setting, and have a fully equipped kitchenette, bathroom, woodburning stove, king size bed, dining table & chairs, high-speed Wi-Fi, and outdoor decking, with dining area and fire pit. Shadows In Time… A light installation by local artists, and father and daughter, Charys & Chris Wilson. The design celebrates the industrial heritage of Bushmills, as a centre for milling flax, corn and barley across a 3- panel light installation. The panels are located on the ground floor (between the Designerie retail space and café). This is one of four sculptures that was designed and installed in the building, made possible through the project’s PEACE IV EU funding. www.chriswilsonartist.com

Motion… A unique sculptural artwork by Irish ceramic artist Orla Kaminska, visible from the side of the new extension at the Courthouse, Bushmills. Motion derives its name and inspiration from the perpetual motion of the nearby Bush River. It symbolises our shared history and the historical significance of the mill wheels that once powered the local craft-based industries. The design concept visualises two mill wheels around their central axis, crossing each other, each reminiscent of the fading mill wheels seen in the locale. The textures, patterns and sculptural imprints include linen and lace, flax, distressed wood and metal, with hints of the river. The textures and colours are familiar and organic, seeking to create an artwork that can be viewed and appreciated from afar when glimpsed from street level, and at closer level, on the outdoor terrace area, more detail is revealed. This is one of four sculptures that was designed and will be installed in the building, made possible through the project’s PEACE IV EU funding. 🚶‍♀️ Took a little visit today to see the lovely Rachel – who took part in our Exploring Enterprise Programme, way back in 2019. Rachel now runs a small baking business called Pastel by Rachel (check out her Instagram account for some serious cake drool – pastelbyrachel). The name was inspired by Rachels Languages Degree and time in Barcelona, with ‘Pastel’ meaning cake in Spanish. Wedding, Birthday, Anniversary... any Celebration Cake can be ordered. Loved spending time learning how Rachel’s idea has evolved into a fantastic business, and yes, before you ask, chocolate did make it a very yummy morning! 8 local individuals took part in a 6-week woodcraft workshop late last year, to design and create a bench for the new The Courthouse Shared Space Creative Hub Under the guide of sustainable woodworker, David Keys, the group worked with reclaimed beams from the old Courthouse building, as well as whiskey barrel staves from Bushmills Distillery. This little video charts the groups journey and the finished piece. Incredible what can be achieved with a few bits of old wood, some clever imagination and a dedicated group of people! We are totally in love with it ❤️ and thank the guys for all their hard work 👏 👏 Looking forward to seeing it take pride of place in the building.
