UPDATE ON BLUE-GREEN ALGAE ON BEACHES

Council has received confirmation that analysis of the water samples collected by DAERA for the presence of blue green algae has established that levels are well below the World Health Organisation (WHO) guideline level.

As a result, the decision has been made to remove the red flag status at Benone Strand, Castlerock Beach and Downhill Strand with immediate effect.

Due to a weather warning and thunder storms we will not be at Castlerock Holiday Park this afternoon and evening.

Jonesy's Van is at Bishop's Gate 10am to 5pm today and weather permitting tomorrow at Castlerock Holiday Park 2pm to 8pm.😃

BLUE GREEN ALGAE UPDATE-CASTLEROCK BEACH

Castlerock Community Association have been advised this afternoon by a senior council officer that Blue Green Algae is now present on Castlerock beach.

THE RLNLI Lifeguards will be ’Red Flagging’ the beach - danger / no swimming.

Blue Green Algae can produce toxins-( poisons)that can make people and animals sick.

Symptoms can include diarrhea/nausea/vomiting/eye or throat irrational and allergic reactions or breathing difficulties.

Pets can also be affected- please keep your dog(s) out of the sea and the River Bann and not allow them to drink either.

Warning – Potentially Toxic Algae

Council has been made aware that blue-green algae has been spotted within the Borough in the Bann and the Agivey Rivers.

It is advised that all contact with water containing these algae is avoided. Farmers and pet owners should also ensure that their animals do not have access to this water.

For further information or if you suspect you have seen this algae please contact Northern Ireland Environment Agency using their reporting app for suspected sightings of blue green algae.
