Celebration time 👏 Little Zara (in year 1 at Cottingham) is quite the artist! Here is some of her work in the Corby rooftop gallery!

Yes we don’t do art…only Math and English, but our aim is to help young people engage better with the world around them. As they learn to read, write and work with numbers, they become more curious, and we do this in a special way through our workbook each day with our students.

This, however, is alllll Zara :)

Wow, I am so proud of you Damenica! One of our younger students in year one, has mastered her +1, +2,+3 and now +4!

When we say ‘mastered’, Damenica can do 200 questions in 15 minutes…THIS is mastery, and the stronger we master something, the faster we progress at the next stage.

It’s not uncommon to spend many months in addition, and only a few weeks learning multiplication. If adding is good, multiplication is good.

Chloe started Kumon with little to no English in primary school, and had moved from abroad. Many years later and with work every week together, she is at the top of her game as a grown up young lady 👏

But I still remember her as a little one years ago! And that is my aim with each young child, to stick with their family all the way to university…that’s what we aim at Kumon, and the younger we can begin together, the better!

Students on holiday don’t stop :)

We only close for a couple weeks each year and continue throughout most holidays (summer, half term). However on occasion when we do close for a week, students usually take their homework with them :) I let families choose their preference, but encourage families to keep up their habit, even if I design something a little bit quicker, or easier to build more confidence.

Meet Sufiyan! This young man has been a part of the Kumon family for a couple years now and is developing so well at Hall Meadows Primary in Kettering.

Read the stories this little year 1 is making...and some maths he is learning at home with mum :)

Sufiyan has his class each week at Kumon and completes a little workbook we make for him each day. The books Sufiyan completes at home and in class are individual to him…just like every student at Kumon. - every child is unique…why should they receive the same?

One of our highest level students for age is Luca (He is currently completing year 6 maths and English … he is in year 2! … and has been on an adventure. Giant’s Causeway North Ireland, Titanic museum Belfast and more…

We feel it’s really important for a student to develop holistically. That’s why we start by developing their attitude to learning first. The more children explore and play, the more they learn!

Yes Kumon has daily worksheets to complete, but we want students to view this as an exciting adventure each day within their book and enjoy seeing the world more too. Luca missed class on Saturday so he could enjoy this instead…it is all important!

Brothers Albert and Antonio No. 10 and No. respectively for Maths in year 5 and year 9. (They have been students for over 6 years and now work at Kumon)!

With this showing…it all started with an individual plan and care for each family equally. I will always spend equal time and investment with each family in my personal aim to discover and nurture a child’s individual potential. It brings me no greater joy than to see a child surprise their parents over and over again in this pursuit.

Well done Indie! One of our students showing great initiative in her Saturday class…

Indie is learning a new method within algebraic expressions. She proactively asked for all the examples in previous worksheets to support her work in class and produce more self-reliance through her self-belief.

It is these traits we aim to develop in conjunction with academic ability. It may be ‘keeping your hand flat on the page’ or ‘keeping your pencil close to the question while thinking’ both to develop focus and concentration at earlier ages. Or traits ‘studying examples with a curious mind’ or ‘analysing or patterns to learn from’ at an older age.

Indie is an excellent example!

3 of our Reception students moving to year one all in the same year at Hall Meadow Primary, one of the most impressive primary schools we have had the pleaser of watching students develop from.

With a great school, great parents, and their individual Kumon study programmes giving a boost at home and at their weekly class, make for these bright and excited faces :)

We have some help on the marking table! I’m sorry Kirat for the unexpected photo at the end! She is one of our staff member’s helping in all roles at the centre from marking class work, recording the results of each worksheet at home, working with the youngest students in nursery developing soft skills, to the heavier work in the higher maths and English up through GCSE and A-level prep. She works with new students on their first class, and students who have been with us for many years. She can even run our classroom directing the team of 8 around her, under my direction.

We are hiring again this summer and with a waiting list of 15+ pre-qualified people looking for an interview, only one or two will be chosen to undergo training this year.

It has become a coveted spot on the Kumon team and I select those with the brightest heads and the strongest hearts. Leadership, empathy, sharpness and an astute mind, being some of the most important qualities, as students will naturally emulate and aspire to be like the assistants, the qualities of an assistant become of vital importance. Kirat is a wonderful example of a student, turned assistant, at Kumon.

In one of our next posts I will share Rufus, our senior assistant, who will sadly be leaving us in September to begin his university studies in dentistry.

I love parents at Kumon to get to know the team under my wing, working with your children.

Congratulations to Amber in her school play last week!

Despite her prep for the play, she has kept up to date with her work each day and is pushing through fractions and decimals years above 🙂

In our previous post we mention Ayat as one of the highest level students in the UK for her age. Her parents have knowledge to share for you! How does she feel at school? Let’s see with a wonderful note of advice for other parents:

‘’Ayat was given homework from school during the school holidays to write a paragraph about what she did during the school holidays. She wrote a lovely essay about her visit to Snowdonia with lots of ‘wow’ words like scrumptious, delectable, picturesque etc and the teachers at school were so impressed that they took a print out of her essay and read it in the school assembly. Ayat was beaming with happiness yesterday. I thought I would share this with you as it is solely due to kumon that she has achieved this. Thank you. Seeing her progress each week gives me positive energy to persevere and she has become way more responsible than before. If I am on a late shift she does her Kumon worksheets herself and keeps them on the dining table for me to check when I return from work.‘’

Thank you to my wonderful parents for such kind wishes while away on holiday.

I wish I could bring something back for each student however it just wouldn’t fit on the plane!

I recognise many of our parents were not born in the UK and as part of my week away I have enjoyed learning from other cultures in Eastern Europe to join with my already (admittedly limited!) knowledge of Indian culture.

I thoroughly enjoy understanding where my families come from or where their heritage lie, and I feel this is important when working with your child even though we have goals within the UK and the western world.

We have families from many countries in Corby and I am building a huge metal poster in the centre to show where each family comes from. (See pic)

Show me your home and allow the community we are building in Kumon to celebrate and understand. Oh! And we are now working on the development of Kumon in countries out here 😉

Will Kumon help my child at school? Every parent wants the best for their child at school; to be happy, to grow, and to be nurtured to achieve their full potential. So naturally, “Will Kumon help my child at school?” is often one of the first questions that many new parents ask. And one that Kumon can now confidently answer.

Rebecca has made it to Kumon UK’s front page!

In just under a decade, over 1000 students in Corby/Kettering have studied on the mathematics programme, however Rebecca is the first to complete.

This achievement shows the dedication and work ethic she has displayed over many years. However at one stage she was just like many others! The difference? Years of consistency daily when weeks got harder, progress slowed, repetition was needed and smiles gained. She has finally done it, and we are so proud of you. It has been a pleasure watching you grow into a strong and competent young woman and a leader in your field of choice in the years to come.
