Intuitively dark and mysterious. If you can find this hidden bar cosy evenings can be spent tucked up in one of the little nooks sipping on moonshine and forbidden cocktails!

Trouble is, you’ll need to find it first… who’s up for a game of hide and seek?

Dental & Medical Design…

Good interior design in a medical setting requires a balance between functionality and aesthetics.

It should create a welcoming and calming environment that helps to reduce anxiety and stress for patients and their families.

The design should prioritize hygiene, safety, and accessibility while also incorporating elements that promote healing and comfort.

Colours and lighting should be carefully selected to create a soothing atmosphere, and furniture and decor should be easy to clean and maintain.

Here's the "before" and "during" of a recent project!

We really love the buzz of a new project.

This week we’ve started a new bar project and we’re looking forward to starting a new project with a dentist.

We can’t wait to get our hands on the building, it dates back to 1840.

Combating staff shortages and rising costs with interior design – yes, it can be done! - Black Ivy Design 04/05/2023

With the rising costs of running venues and keeping your employees happy, it’s time to get creative and reconfigure layouts to improve the functionality and efficiency of your hospitality space.

Working with a professional interior designer lets you cleverly and creatively examine traffic flow around and through your venue. This can significantly impact wait times and greatly improve the customer experience.

Reconfiguration matched with varying textures, shapes, focal points such as feature walls, and bar spaces that incorporate natural resources such as tiles and even natural clay to give a rustic yet contemporary vibe, all help to improve the flow around the venue and the ambience, telling a story that captures your customers and entices them to stay longer.

This improvement in wait times, matched with increased operational efficiency, can improve profit margins while reducing energy and maintenance costs.

Combating staff shortages and rising costs with interior design – yes, it can be done! - Black Ivy Design 26/04/2023

Rising costs are having a crippling effect on businesses and individuals across every sector in every industry.

This matched with the 2020 reports from the Chamber of Commerce that reported that 76% of businesses are facing difficulties filling staff vacancies, and over half of businesses currently reporting that they are operating below full capacity, which means looking ahead almost seems too bleak to think about.

However, changing the interior design of a venue can address the challenges many face today.

By creating spaces that meet customer needs and demands and by taking your customer on a journey, providing a unique and memorable experience with your brand, you can ensure they return time and time again—helping you to not only create a sustainable brand but increase your profit margins along the way.

At Black Ivy Design, we’ve used these challenging times to look at more creative ways to combat staff shortages and rising costs, all through intelligent interior design, and we want to share our top tips with you.

Hotel Lobby Design.

As a customer walks through the door, they want to feel relaxed and assured.

This feeling is achieved through thoughtful design.

Our top tips for hotel lobby design...

Seeing as a first impression is a lasting impression, a hotel lobby should wow their guests by creating a memorable and welcoming experience. The aesthetic should be a mix of the brand's mission and purpose. Therefore, the overall design needs to reflect this and the ambiance needs to be right. This can all be created by layering elements such as lighting, textures, colours, shapes and forms that are all cohesive with the design concept of the brand.

Knowing who your target customers are will determine the functionality of the space and the style. Footfall needs to flow so careful consideration must be taken to ensure guests can move around comfortably and with ease.

Areas for workers to plug in their laptops and work are becoming increasingly popular therefore plenty of charging points and fast Wi-Fi are a must. Tech now plays a big role in bringing brands to the forefront, self check-in points, digital signage, and monitors for those brands who want to keep up with the other hotel operators.

Each zone needs to be stunning but the main focal point should be the desk area and it needs to be positioned in clear view so as guests walk in they know exactly where they are heading. This must also fit the brand message. Appealing to the senses always connects to guests on another level so make sure you use scents, textures, colours, and materials that absorb sound and choose music that fits with the ambiance you are trying to create.

Evoke emotions through texture.

Add visual weight to your interior design with various textures.

Textures can significantly affect the feel of a space.

For example, rough textures can create a feeling of intimacy and provide a more rustic and grounded sense.

In contrast, venues with smooth (and, dare we say it, often shiny) surfaces appear more modern and sleek, adding a contemporary tone as soon as you walk through the door.

Here are some examples…

Creating a vision through Interior Design on paper is great!

However, we like to be hands-on to ensure that our vision is carried right through the build and completion of a project.

This is often the part where changes might be needed and so working closely with contractors is an important part of our role.

You need to make your interior design work for your business. Improving the space to meet a purpose and creating a first impression that makes an impact.

A first impression that positively affects how your customer feels, behaves, and acts.

But how do you achieve this? How do you create such an ambience that your customers not only return to your venue time and time again, but they stay, they spend, and they enjoy.

We’ve got some ideas here…

It’s not all about the customer.

Interior design is not all for your customers; your employees are important too!

Working in uninspiring, outdated, and drab spaces makes it extremely difficult to feel motivated, creative, and driven to do and offer more.

An attractive, chilled-out zone, with staff spaces they can call their own, can boost employee productivity two-fold.

Increasing efficiency and boosting morale, an attractive staff space is conducive to increasing worker output.

Look at seating (sofas in shared spaces can create a feeling of relaxation, warmth, and calm) and multi and bright colours to add depth, excitement and promote productivity.

Green represents balance, growth and peace and invokes a sense of harmony in a space.

However, getting the shade right is key.

Lighter and more vibrant tones are good to highlight the natural and organic features of a menu, while darker and deep greens tend to be more conservative and masculine.

Bold, luminous and garish greens can make consumers uneasy and agitated.

Research has also proved the colour green can also stimulate thirst, so if you get the shade right consumers will stay longer and drink more!

Why opt for interior design for your venue? — Black Ivy Design 13/03/2023

Research from The Design Council states that "over a ten-year period, companies that put emphasis on design outperformed the FTSE 100 Index by 200%".

Show personality in your design…

The look and feel of your venue are a direct reflection of you and your business.

Adding value through brand awareness, good interior design can breathe new life into old and tired spaces, putting your brand, vision, and story front and centre.

You want to create spaces that people talk about, creating a customer experience that flows, is considered inspiring, and encourages productivity.

Most importantly, you want to use designs to show your personality and create an emotive link.

The Cream Store is an independent clothing and lifestyle retailer specialising in authentic streetwear.

Established in 2005 they had now reached a point where they were outgrowing their first store.

With the new premises purchased, The Cream Store felt overwhelmed by the size of the space and turned to Black Ivy Design to help them transform the vast store into a retail haven aimed at the local streetwear consumer.

With over 2500 sqft on the ground floor to play with, the ethos of the brand couldn’t be compromised, and the design needed to elevate the products on display.

Black Ivy Design worked closely with the store to achieve this and future-proof the space, starting from the proposed plan and then scaling the design back.

We think you’ll agree the in-store experience is one to be proud of.

Capturing the minimal environment and placing products at the forefront.

The Cream Store has seen an increase in revenue and a steady rise in footfall since the store moved premises and we wish them every success.

Last month Leanne Armstrong, Black Ivy Design's founder visited Coventry University to host a lecture about how to break into the design industry and what to expect.

She spoke about what inspired her to study interior design, how she got her first job and talked in detail about how to take a project from concept to completion with details on materials and thought process.

She found it really inspiring to talk to the students about what issues they are facing in the current climate and give them advice on how to overcome these hurdles and what they should be implementing now to ensure they follow the path they desire within the industry.

With the ability to largely affect the mood of a room, lighting is the most important element to consider when designing a space.

In addition to altering the mood of the occupants in a room, lighting can transform the room in shape and size as well as bringing an extra layer of design.
