Solar panels provide birds and rodents year-round shelter from weather and predators. However, these little animals might cause damage to the panels and fixing, which may void the manufacturer’s warranty, incur long-term maintenance costs, and, more seriously, increase the risk of fire hazards.

“Even a solitary squirrel can do an extraordinary amount of damage. Squirrels can chew through almost anything and, like rabbits, need to keep their teeth occupied constantly. They can get through a rafter in a day; chew into a water tank and deliver half a ton of water into your living room; or nibble through a cable, electrify themselves, perish while locked onto the cable and burst into flames, like a miniature hog roast, in your dust-dry insulation. All of these examples are real......” The Guardian reports: bit.ly/41KZQjy

Spring is the season for new life and regrowth. Surely it is a great idea to have a walk in the woods to appreciate and unwind in the beauty of nature. Just be sure that you put on appropriate clothes for protection as health officials have warned of a deadly tick-borne disease that can cause meningitis is “likely” to be present in the UK.

This time of the year rodents are still the dominant pest across the country. Most of them are great climbers and swimmers, hence capable of infiltrating a variety of premises. Once they enter homes or gardens, where food sources are reachable, they can have litter all year round and breed in large numbers.

They like to chew wires which not only causes damage to properties but also increases the risks of fire from electric short circuits. Besides, their droppings might contain viruses that cause health issues. During the night, they like to run around in the attic or pipelines and produce noises that could be quite loud and disturb sleep.

PESTUK is a BPCA (British Pest Control Association) member and has been assessed to ensure we meet strict membership criteria. All our technicians are professionally trained, follow BPCA Codes of Best Practice and deal with all kinds of pests humanely.

Call us on 0800 026 0308 or email [email protected] for a quote if you are experiencing a rodent issue.

Although April Fools’ Day has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures… its exact origins remain a mystery 🤡
• On April Fools’ Day in 1698, many people were tricked into going to the Tower of London to watch the “washing of the lions” (a ceremony that didn’t exist)
On the 2nd April that year, an edition of a local newspaper debunked the hoax, whilst publicly shaming everyone who fell for it! 🦁
• On April Fools’ Day in 1980, the BBC announced Big Ben’s clock face was going digital and whoever got in touch first could win the clock hands! 🕰

😱 Fun Fact Friday 😱
You get goosebumps when you’re scared to make yourself look bigger!
A good example of this is when you see a cat facing a dog… you’ll see its hair standing on edge, but you don’t see the goosebumps hidden underneath their fur, which they also get when they’re scared.
It’s believed that our ancestors most likely had the same reflex just in case there was something coming for us.
Goosebumps are our reaction to increased adrenaline, which explains why we get goosebumps when we’re cold… or emotional 🥶 😭

☘️ Fun Fact St. Patrick’s Day 🇮🇪
‘Kiss me… I’m Irish’ is a common phrase associated with St. Patrick’s Day… 💋
It originates from the legend of the Blarney Stone…which is believed to bring luck and eloquence to those who kiss it.
Also, according to folklore, you can pinch anyone on St. Patrick’s Day for not wearing green… because green makes you invisible to leprechauns… and leprechauns like to pinch people! 🤏

Woodworm season is approaching… they emerge during what is known as the ‘woodworm emergence season’…obviously! 😂
The best time to spot woodworm is between the months of March and September (also known as the flight season)…this is when woodworm are most likely to leave the timber in an attempt to mate.
High levels of moisture in your wood can make it more vulnerable to woodworm… simply because it makes the wood easier to chew.
So you should try to eliminate any damp patches in your home as it’s highly unlikely that a woodworm infestation will go away on its own.
Woodworm can infest doors, windows, skirting, joists, floorboards, rafters and other structural timbers. A severe case of woodworm can affect the structural integrity of your home.

There are 30 species of woodlouse in the UK…and their season is just around the corner.
Woodlice thrive in moist conditions… so they don’t usually survive long indoors thanks to our tendency to maintain a warm, dry home environment. However, if they do seem to be taking root in your property, it could be a sign of an underlying damp problem.
When large numbers of woodlice are seen indoors, it may mean that there is a problem with high levels of moisture in the room due to condensation or dampness.
Make your house as woodlice-unfriendly as you can. This involves checking for any places that might feel like home to them.
Check for damp walls…these provide a perfect living environment for woodlice.
They like to feed on rotting wood, mildew, decaying leaves and plant life… so keep plants and weeds away from the entrances to your home.
Woodlice are not harmful at all… they are just a nuisance pest that come indoors by accident.
Once woodlice find their way indoors, particularly into warm dry rooms, they will die from water loss within a day or so.
Many people find woodlice unpleasant… so if you think you have a woodlice problem, we can help.

❓Pest vs Insect❓
A pest is any organism that spreads disease, causes destruction or is otherwise a nuisance.
Examples of pests are mosquitos, rodents, cockroaches and fleas.
However, not all insects are pests. Many different types of insect eat other pest insects… therefore making them a beneficial species ✅

PVS (phantom vibration syndrome) is a modern-day phenomenon where people think their mobile phone is ringing or vibrating when it’s actually not.
PVS is associated with excessive mobile phone use…it creates a tactile hallucination as the brain imagines the vibration that is not present.
Apparently some of us are so concerned about missing a call or message that we’ve become extra aware of the sensations that mean one is incoming…!

If you’ve noticed an increasing abundance of rodents outside your home recently, it’s due to the approaching Spring… which is a common time for them to start breeding 🐀🐁🐿
Their annual breeding cycles begin in March as the days become warmer, food is becoming more readily available… and their babies will have the greatest chance of survival.
Rodents like to nest in places that are warm, secure and with easy access to food and water… all the requirements that your home offers.
Proofing is an efficient, long-term solution to prevent rodent infestations in your property. For squirrels and glis glis it’s usually carried out externally… whilst for rats and mice it’s carried out internally.

Houseflies find sugar with their feet…which are 10 million times more sensitive than human tongues 👅
Their taste receptors are located on their lower legs and feet. When a fly lands on a tasty meal…which can be anything from animal faeces to your lunch…they will often wander all over it to get a good taste before consuming it.

Squirrels are equal parts adorable and annoying. They raid our bird feeders, dig up our gardens looking for bulbs…and feast on our fruit trees before they even get a chance to ripen.
Squirrels don’t hibernate because they don’t need to. A squirrel prepares for the coming winter by gathering enough goodies to last them the entire winter season.
Squirrels do fall into ‘winter rest’… they will reduce their usual long hours of daily activity to about 4-5 hours. During this shorter period, squirrels spend their time collecting and eating their food. If weather conditions are extreme, squirrels can spend a few days sleeping.
Whilst it’s entertaining to watch their fun and frolics… watch out for where they scamper to after their play. If you see them flee towards your home then look for any entry points they may have found 🏡

Timeline photos 14/01/2023

🪳Cockroaches are very resourceful insects that will enter your home in a variety of ways 🪳
They will crawl through small holes and cracks in your building… find entry points in or around your windows and doors… and hitch a ride on bags, backpacks, suitcases and other containers that you bring inside your home.
When temperatures dip, many cockroaches enter hibernation which stops their growth and causes their metabolic rate to slow down. All they need to remain active and reproduce all winter is a temperature of more than 50F, which your warm home will provide.
Houses, commercial buildings, grocery shops and hospitals see an increase in cockroach infestations during the winter months.
Although your property may appear clean on the surface, leaking hidden pipework and water-fed appliances create conditions in which roaches thrive…the readily available source of water combined with the warm sheltered spaces provide the ideal conditions for them to create their nests.
It is possible to completely eradicate an infestation… but as they are likely to return, you must be vigilant and use preventative measures.
Unfortunately cockroaches are not loners… so if you spot one, there are likely to be many more that you can’t see. Cockroaches are nocturnal creatures, so you’ll most likely spot them when you go into a dark room and turn the light on.
If you think you have an infestation… we can help…
