New Perlisten price list released today - slight increases to the in-room S Series (in-wall remain the same), but the good news is that some models are now cheaper! The R5m monitors and the R5c centre speaker (as well as in-wall versions) are reduced by £300 each down to £2400, which would save almost £1000 across an LCR set.

The Ophidian Mambo 2 loudspeakers stand just under 900mm tall, and are ideal for small to medium size listening spaces where they can be placed pretty close to the wall thanks to the Aeroflex technology. Despite this being a rear venting system for the bass, there's no high velocity air flow like conventional ports to cause chaos in the bass region, which would normally require the speaker to be pulled out from the wall. This makes them a perfect addition to the range of loudspeakers we carry, with all of them being room friendly in one way or another, allowing them to work in a wide variety of rooms.

Ophidian speakers always have a knack for sounding much bigger than they actually are, and presenting music in a well balanced manner, with no one part of the frequency range ever dominating the rest. Designed and made in England, they come in walnut or oak real wood veneers.

Monday afternoon - a bit of N.W.A. with Hegel and FYNE AUDIO…

Got to say, this was a great sounding system at the North West Audio Show over the weekend - room 121, Auden Distribution, the smaller of their two rooms.

Purely vinyl based (despite the streaming capabilities of the amp), comprising of the Amphion Argon 3S loudspeakers (the Argon 1 and Argon 0 were also used over the course of the weekend) on Solidsteel stands, connected to a Hegel H190v amplifier, using its internal MM phono stage to play the Luphonic Labs H2 turntable - Audiomica cabling throughout, including the high quality supplied Audiomica tonearm cable that comes standard with any Luphonic turntable.

It was resented in a typical living room fashion on an unit (and lighting), with no additional isolation, so the system has even further potential. Although not "budget" (coming in at just under £10k plus cabling), it was significantly cheaper than many other systems at the show.

Over the course of the weekend, the room gained a LOT of great feedback, for the simplicity of the system, the music being played, and of course, its sound quality. Many commented it was a system they could relax and listen to for a long time, but not boring in any way, still presenting plenty of detail and presence. Others liked the simple domestic look, rather than the mountains of boxes on scaffolding rigs that took up half of the room. Plenty of people were loving the varied music we were playing, which included some show stalwarts (you need reference points for visitors), but the popular album seemed to be Lady Blackbird. The system created a great three dimensional soundstage, precise imaging, and effortless detail.

In the end, its thunder was stolen by Auden's larger room, which won best sounding room at the show, but this more basic system, for me, has been the best "simple" system displayed so far, partly thanks to the great sounding Luphonic turntable (review due soon). The main aim at a show should be to create a great sounding system to wow visitors - this system aced it.

We have a barely used (2 months old) AVID INGENIUM Upgrade PSU available. This Upgrade allows the Ingenium to use the Diva II SP DSP Power Supply and twin drive belts. A new motor housing is supplied with 24v Mass damped motor.allows for accurate fine speed adjustment and instant electronic speed change at the press of a button.

Easy to install with full instructions - just a case of unhooking the belt between INGENIUM and PSU, remove existing PSU, and add in the new PSU, hooking up the two supplied belts.

A very generous donation for our charity from one of our (now exclusively) vinyl customers who has upgraded from his AVID INGENIUM he purchased earlier this year - he loved it so much he’s moved on to the SEQUEL!

I won’t be able to sort the CDs out just yet (yes, we sell used CDs for charity) as there’s four IKEA bags which are two layers deep, but the INGENIUM is now available, as is the upgrade PSU which I will be selling separately - so if you have an INGENIUM and want to improve it, the PSU brings a surprising lift in performance!

Auditioning some more British audio today…running rather nicely off the compact little Bel Canto integrated amplifier. We have the F500SP and F501SP on loan at the moment - if anybody would like to come and have a listen, let us know.

We will shortly have a part exchanged AVID INGENIUM turntable available for sale. This will include the aluminium upgrade platter, acrylic cover, and a black AVID Platform (RRP £2310). It will come with the standard PSU, but will have a DIVA SP PSU option which can be made available separately (RRP £1500) if anybody would like to upgrade their own INGENIUM.

This deck and accessories were purchased February this year, and the PSU early this month - all complete with all original packaging. The customer has upgraded to an AVID deck further up the range.

Perlisten's new "in-wall" subwoofer. Inside the solid aluminium enclosure are two sets of four 8" D Series bass drivers in a push-pull configuration, and driven by an offboard 3kW power amplifier. Only 80kg in weight 🙂

Having experienced Ken Kreisel's push-pull 8" subs, this is going to be something special for home theatre...

Nice little THX Ultra 5.1 system for someone!

We've just had this lovely little collection of Miller & Kreisel THX home theatre speakers in which we are selling on behalf of a customer. It's all in very good condition - about as good as I've seen for these products in recent years. And unusually, the S150s come with their dedicated (and ridiculously heavy) speaker stands! All in perfect working order.

The system comprises of:

3x S150THX with angled left/right
3x S150 stands
2x SS150THX tripole surrounds
1x MX350THX subwoofer

These are all the original, American made Miller & Kreisel, not the Chinese made Danish MK Sound that followed in 2008, for which the current models would set you back around £10,000 (excluding stands which aren't available). This set up will get you nigh on the same performance for £2995

So what are we playing about with on this lovely sunny day?

Paradigm Founder 120h, the flagship of the Founder range.

They're actually not as big as you'd expect, seen here next to the 80f floorstanders.

These bad boys have a 1" aluminium/magnesium/ceramic HF unit sat within its own waveguide, a 6" aluminium/magnesium midrange driver, and three 8" carbon bass drivers - downward ported for placement flexibility. Three bass drivers are self powered with a 1000w RMS power amplifier in each cabinet, meaning the amplifier only has to drive the midrange and HF unit, raising in-room sensitivity to 95dB. This allows you to use an amplifier with a greater focus on pure sound quality, with less regard for an ultra healthy power output, as would be the case for most high-end loudspeakers. You could run these off a little Wiim streaming amplifier. I mean, you wouldn't, but you could.

Due to the prodigious bass capability of this arrangement, the three drivers utilise Anthem's ARC room equalisation, giving a flat response for your listening position is virtually any room. This means they can sit up against walls and take up less floor space. This feature alone sets them apart from most other loudspeakers.

Cabinets come in real wood walnut and black walnut finishes, as well as piano black and the gorgeous looking midnight cherry.

AVID HIFI's INGENIUM turntable has been a popular model since it arrived at the little audio company just over a year ago, and quite rightly so. It may only be the entry point into the world of AVID turntables, but its performance at its price point stands out just as much as its bigger brothers.

The INGENIUM has been designed as a complete package, the sum of its parts providing an end result beyond expectations. That's not to say you'd be left with nowhere to go with regards to upgrades though. The hefty aluminium platter offers a sizeable upgrade to the MDF platter, elevating its performance even further. There's also the option of upgrading the separate motor and PSU to that of the DIVA II SP turntable. And yes, you can change the tonearm to whatever you wish, including AVID's own arms such as the NEXUS. And that's before we get into cartridges. So the INGENIUM is no "dead duck", as some turntables can be.

The INGENIUM is a big hitter, and despite its affordable price point, is worthy of being considered as "high end audio" - high end performance doesn't have to come with a high end price tag.

I still say one of the best (very) small speakers available is the Ophidian Minimo, which is the smallest 'full range' loudspeaker we carry. They're particularly ideal for smaller spaces and to genuinely use in a bookshelf scenario thanks to its Aeroflex bass porting port system, extending bass without the drawbacks of conventional bass port systems.

We have a bargain for some lucky audiophile!

Our demo Perlisten R7t loudspeakers are available to take home for the princely sum of £4995! Honestly, I'm being robbed! You will likely have seen the rave reviews the brand has been getting, so you can be assured you'll be getting a top class loudspeaker.

The R7ts are downward ported, so near-wall placement is less of an issue than with many other speakers, but also come with foam bungs to reduce bass if necessary. Their DPC array waveguide controls the dispersion of midrange and high frequencies to reduce in-room reflections from walls, floors, and ceilings, making them a very room friendly loudspeaker. A recent visitor to the store heard them playing and commented on their overall quality, but in particular their bass performance and presence.

They are in excellent condition and finished in high gloss black. Obviously we have all original packaging for them. Photos can be provided upon request.

These will be collection only, no part exchanges I'm afraid - the money is being redirected into our new AV demo room which we want to get up and running as soon as possible.

Home Cinema Choice review of an Ascendo Immersive Audio 7.2.4 Atmos system, consisting of The10 Monitor LCR, The6 Monitor surrounds, The5 Monitors as Atmos speakers, and a pair of SV12 subwoofers, achieving a best Buy status. This will pretty much be the system available to audition at the little audio company shortly.

There's still the odd bit of decorating to do here and there, but we're up and running at the new premises in Balsall Common (CV7) on the Warwickshire / West Midlands border. We have free on site parking, so visiting us is free. We are still appointment only for the time being, this is in order to provide the best possible one-on-one service.

As well as a dedicated AV room which will be fitted out just as a proper home theatre installation would be, we will also have a very small space dedicated to more compact hi-fi setups that will be used in confined spaces - auditioning them in a suitably small space is the only real way to choose the right solution.
