A lovely before and after😊 Thankfully the customer hadn’t been using this gas fire because we found the chimney had been capped off with a pepper pot😳
Gas fire removed, chimney opened up, new concrete lintel fitted, new liner kit fitted, chamber lined, bespoke flagstone hearth fitted, ceramic beam fitted, new Ecodesign Ready stove fitted, carbon monoxide alarm fitted, installation registered with HETAS and all rubbish taken away…Phew!😁💪🔥🪵
We do love updates and this one is just gorgeous 😍🔥🪵❤️
Another long post alert🚨
Like all installations, a huge amount goes on behind the scenes and this is what we did to put right the awful mess a customer was left with from a different company…..
✅Rebuilt the sides of the opening
so the lintel is correctly
supported and the structural
integrity of the chimney breast is
no longer compromised
✅Bricked up the hole above the
lintel
✅Fitted a closure plate
✅Used a cherry picker and
operator to fit a chimney pot,
remove the existing liner and fit a
new liner, as once we’d fitted the
chimney pot, the original liner
was too short
✅Using the cherry picker means
we are working to HSE standards
and no damage is caused to
either the roof or the chimney
✅Ensured adapter was correctly
fitted to liner using appropriate
number of screws
✅Fitted a bespoke flagstone
hearth that was the correct size
✅Lined the sides of opening with
cement board
✅Refitted the stove
✅Registered the installation with
HETAS
We of course, were able to correct the mess made as we have the knowledge, skills and experience to do so but…..we should never have had too😔
So we’ll say it again…. Ask, ask, ask. A good installer will never have an issue with answering any questions. Ask for recommendations from friends, family, work colleagues. Go and see an installers work where possible.
It’s a big investment and it has to be right🔥🪵❤️
This is going to be a long post, but it’s absolutely vital that the message is out there. Please take the time to have a read and a share would be great too👍🙏
This is what greeted us when we were asked to have a look at a recent install.
The customer had gone with a local company with registered installers, that were competitive on price and had good reviews…..
…..and this is what they had been left with. They had been told it was safe to use until the installer could get back to finish it.
It’s difficult to know where to start with this so we’ll jump straight in with the obvious
❌ Chimney breast not bricked up above the lintel
❌Flexible flue pipe exposed
❌ Adapter connected to liner with only 1 screw rather than the 3 required
❌ No register plate fitted
❌Opening too big so lintel not properly supporting chimney breast
❌sides of chimney breast not reinstated from previous back boiler install
❌bricks inside above the opening loose and not supported - we pulled one out when we inspected and it can be seen on the hearth next to the stove 📷
❌Incorrect size of hearth fitted - too small to meet regulations
And that’s just what was immediately visible…..
❌damage to roof tiles from using ladders, causing leaks to bedroom.
The only acceptable means to drop a flue liner as stated by the Health & Safety Executive is either using a cherry picker or from scaffolding.
❌liner fitted with a pot hanging cowl on a chimney without a pot
We are appalled that there are companies out there, taking large amounts of money off customers and leaving behind an unsafe and poor quality installation. If that wasn’t bad enough, they were then given incorrect and unsafe advice!
We have of course, been able to rectify the mess left behind, but we should never have had to.
If you are considering having a stove installed….
➡️have a look at previous installations carried out by the installer where possible
➡️ask friends/relatives/work colleagues/ online for recommendations
➡️look at reviews
➡️ask, ask, ask. No reputable installer will ever get fed up of answering questions to reassure customers
There is an awful lot to an install that goes on behind the scenes to make sure the install is safe and efficient.
We as an industry, have to work to rigid protocols covering everything from,
❗️how we access roofs and
chimneys
❗️who is qualified to open up
chambers and install lintels
❗️how big the size of the opening
can be
❗️the size and material of the
hearth
❗️the distance from combustibles
and non combustibles
❗️the building materials acceptable
to use
❗️the correct liner and flue
components
❗️the fuel that can be burnt
❗️how to use the appliance
❗️how to maintain your appliance
and this is just the basics…..
The list is long and the level of knowledge and skill of the installer is absolutely vital.
It’s a big investment and it needs to be 100% right👍🔥🪵

Never underestimate the importance of burning the correct fuel in the correct way, in your stove.
There is a ton of advice readily available on line and you can drop us a call or message any time.
We’re always happy to help👍🔥🪵
Burning dry quality fuel will reduce your environmental impact and release fewer particulates. When wet wood is used, it's harder to keep the fire going as the moisture within the wood will need to be burnt off! 💧🪵🔥
