History Of Sands Marine
Sands Marine was founded in March 2008 but the story doesn't start there. The Sands family have been boating for as long as I can remember. Our first family boat that i recall was an “Ulster Boat” a little simulated clinker open boat and being a family of 5 dad proudly named the boat “The 5 Of Us”. With my two brothers as young boys mum & dad often brought us here to Kinnego Marina to the founding company on site Mullen Marine (est 1973). Here we would drool over all the shining new and used boats some of which would now be classics. As the years moved on dad , my brother’s and myself would become customers buying our boats and equipment from Billy Mullen and the crew over many years. Little did i know back then would i start working here in 1998 under the new management of John Morton who had just purchased the business from Mullen Marine in 1997 and changed the company name to Waterline Marine. It was a pleasure to start work with the masters of the trade who had been in the business a long time and who i remembered from when my dad would bring us to the yard as boys. Men like Robbie Gilpin (sales & rigging) Eric Wilson (mechanic) Colin Boyd (chandlery) John Scott (rigging) and David Magown (sales) .
I can still remember my first boat sale in my new role as sales assistant which was a used Fairline Weekender called Moon which i believe sits near carrybridge on lough erne. The marine trade grew each year as the economy and the celtic tiger grew and John Morton branched out buying over the hire company CarrickCraft which had a fleet of over 100 cruisers based on the Shannon/Erne waterways. The two companies merged and we were then known as Waterline Marine trading as CarrickCraft. After a few years John asked me to take on the role of Sales Director to push sales both North & South. We established another outlet in Malahide Marina which was a huge success and then a further smaller outlet in Banagher on the Shannon. CarrickCraft soon became one of the leading suppliers of sportboats and cruisers in Ireland being the distributor for Bayliner, Trophy, Orkney Pioner, Kruger boats. At the latter end of 2007 John decided to withdraw from boat sales as he wound down aiming for retirement and i was approached to buy over the sales side of the company at Kinnego Marina. After discussion Sands Marine was born under the ownership of Nigel & Glenn Sands (brother) in March 2008.This is were the story for me is at a high when we stood with mum & dad watching the name Sands Marine get erected on a sign above the building. To think they brought us here a young boys, then we became customers, then i was an employee and now an owner ! life is definitely a journey and our love for boats as a family certainly followed us through the years.
Unfortunately no-one would have seen the economy bust BUT we cut our cloth accordingly kept our bow to the wind and pushed through with the help of our loyal customer base. They say survival is the new success and we survived. So this year (2018) we celebrated 10 years as Sands Marine and myself being 20 years here on site at Kinngeo Marina. So a big thank you to all our customers, to family, to Joanne my partner and now co-pilot in the business :) for all your support. I hope you have enjoyed this little insight to the background of Sands Marine and their passion for the hobby we all enjoy called “Boating”
