NYOS 2024 | The Amatis Trio 🎻🎹

Introducing our final soloists for the NYOS 2024 concert programme, the phenomenal Amatis Trio 🙌🏽

📣 Lea, Samuel and Mengjie have been celebrated for their energy, insight, creativity, communication and passion and will be performing a world premiere piece commissioned by NYOS from Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi ✍🏼

Finally, for Paddington Trio's Stephanie Tang its the piano's versatility and range that inspires her to play. "I love the freedom the repertoire gives me, I don’t feel limited to only specialise in one aspect of piano repertoire but if I wanted to, I also could. In terms of programming, there is never scarcity. I’ve also always been drawn to the endless possibilities and colours in the instrument itself, especially when I’m playing on an excellent piano!"

22/10/2023

We also asked Paddington Trio's Tuulia Hero what is it about the violin that made her want to make it her instrument? "I love the repertoire, and I love how the close vibration of the instrument affects and includes my whole body when playing. To me, the violin is a meditative, ever-present part of my life, and I love what playing it has taught me about everything other than itself."

22/10/2023

The process of selecting an instrument to play and dedicate a career too is such an individual process. But what is the special 'glue' that creates that bond? For Paddington Trio cellist Patrick Moriarty it's the rich, expressive sound the cello brings to an ensemble. "Its ability to bridge melodies and provide a strong foundation makes it the heart of the piano trio."

21/10/2023

It's always interesting to ask musicians about those who have influenced them. We put the question to Paddington Trio ...
"The very fortunate thing as chamber musicians is that we get to continuously be inspired by each other, the people around us and the great music that is in the heart of all that we do. However, without doubt we have been the most influenced by the most long-standing chamber musicians we have worked and continue to work with, such as Levon Chilingirian and Marc Danel from the Chilingirian and Danel-Quartett Danel Quartets and the members of Quatuor Ébène. They have shown us what it means to lead a life of deep appreciation and continuing love for chamber music, and this we cannot value highly enough."

St John’s Smith Square is an iconic venue and Paddington Trio is excited to perform there - not long to go now until their concert on the 24th!

"St John’s Smith Square is a historical venue for great chamber music, and its legacy of course makes this performance especially exciting for us. The repertoire we have picked is very special to us and we cannot wait to share it with the audience."

The 20 scariest pieces of classical music for Halloween 19/10/2023

Hallowe'en is looming and we've been doing some research about the scariest pieces of classical music...

Classic FM says J.S. Bach’s thunderous Toccata and Fugue in D minor is one of the biggies when it comes to scary music and has been used in classic horror films like The Black Cat, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and even in Doctor Who.

Do you agree with ClassicFM's choices...? 🤔🎃

Our 2023 winners have a distinctive name with a distinctive story around their choice. Violinist Tuulia Hero explains...

"Patrick lived in London since he first started his studies here but Stephanie and I only moved here during the pandemic. We were lost and both looking for the same building one day and ended up asking each other for help. This led to a coffee which then led to us discovering that we want to make music together.

"Patrick was recommended to us by a friend and we very soon ended up taking our first train to our first performance from the Paddington Station. We also felt a connection to the famous bear, having all arrived in London from different countries but having quickly made it our home. This name felt immediately right to us and we have been called the Paddingtons ever since."

will be performing Shostakovich Trio in E Minor Op67 at their concert at St John’s Smith Square on Oct 24th. Cellist Patrick Moriarty explains what drew them to make that choice:

"This piece is completely therapeutic to us. We started working on it when the conflict in Ukraine was first taking place and we needed an outlet to explore the emotions related to what was happening in the world and in relation to it, within us. We believe this work to be as urgent, as meaningful and as important today as it was the day it was written."

New study finds audience heartbeats and breath rates synchronise during a classical concert 15/10/2023

We've always suspected it, but we were fascinated to read that a study from the University of Bern has confirmed that classical music can bring about harmony in the audience as well as in the performance.

"A new study has found that audience members can start breathing at a similar speed, sweating at a similar rate, and even moving similarly in their chairs when enjoying a classical music concert together."

New study finds audience heartbeats and breath rates synchronise during a classical concert Classical music concerts make audience members’ hearts beat in sync – particularly if they have ‘agreeable’ personalities.

There has been a new addition to the Paddington Trio family - Tuulia recently received a 1707 Stradivarius violin on loan from the Sibelius Academy. She said: " It has been exciting to hear our new blend of sounds and to add this new, very old friend into our current mix."

Three Composers and their Irrational Fear of Numbers - The California Symphony 13/10/2023

It's Friday 13th which got us thinking about Triskaidekaphobia, or the fear of the number 13 and discovered this anecdote ... which may or may not be true!

Arnold Schoenberg - the father of 12-tone music - was terrified of the number 13. He avoided rooms, floors, and buildings with the number 13. As Schoenberg aged, the anxiety over the number 13 worsened. He dreaded his sixty-fifth birthday in 1939 because the year was a multiple of 13. He wrote, “Indeed, I am not so well at the moment. I am in my 65th year and you know that 5 times 13 is 65 and 13 is my bad number.”

In 1950 on his seventy-sixth birthday, fellow composer and musician Oskar Adler wrote that because 76 added up to 13 (7+6), it would be a dangerous year for Schoenberg. One day of that year, Schoenberg took to his bed, sick with worry. That day was Friday, July 13, 1951. Schoenberg didn’t make it through the night. He passed away later that day — at 11:45 p.m. — at the age of 76.

Paddington Trio has chosen to perform Mozart's Piano Trio in G major, K496 at St John’s Smith Square, describing it as "one of the most joyous works we have played. It is incredibly fun to perform!"

They add: "Being Mozart, it is incredibly beautiful, simple and operatic! Sometimes as instrumentalists we need to remind ourselves what certain phrases might sound like in an opera instead of being occupied with how to play our instruments. We’ve been trying our best to forget that we play instruments and instead just sing like we are singers in the Royal Opera House!"

11/10/2023

Arvo Pärt's Mozart Adagio is on the programme for Paddington Trio's winners concert. The trio explain why they selected this piece:

"The Mozart-Adagio was dedicated to a close friend of the composer who had suddenly passed, just like the second piano trio by Shostakovich that we paired it with. It helps us to navigate the complicated emotions connected to grieving and loss, and we would still consider it to be music that is full of hope and beauty. The interjections by Arvo Pärt to Mozart’s Adagio from a piano sonata provide a real sense of unpredictability to this music."

Trio's concert on October 24th is coming up quickly! We asked the Trio if there's a difference between preparing for a concert and preparing for a competition.

"The short answer is no! As much as we would love for every jury to like us, our work is all about the relationship that we build with the music we play and about the relationship that is unique between us and any audience we encounter."

Goldberg Variations BWV 988 (Glenn Gould, 1981) - 3/7 09/10/2023

Happy Monday!

According to Classic FM J.S. Bach – Variation no.13 from the Goldberg Variations BWV 988 is one of the best ways to start your day!

"If you’re yet to have your morning coffee, the simplicity and logic of Bach might be for you. This simple variation consists mostly of the interplay between two distinct lines, which meander pleasingly around through harmony and dissonance with the perfect balance which is the hallmark of J.S. Bach."

Concerts — Paddington Trio 08/10/2023

Travel is an essential part of musicians' lives and in the summer since winning our award, Trio said they've found it incredibly exciting to travel to new places together.

"We played three completely different concerts in our five days at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as well as climbed a mountain together while there. We also had a fantastic day performing in the Lake District Summer Music, where we did not have just quite enough time to rent a boat, however, the next day we were already in the Finnish archipelago driving one. In total, we must have spent three whole days at home during these intense summer months of travelling and giving concerts, and we simply owe so much gratitude to all the wonderful places and people that we encountered. The Parkhouse Award presents The Paddington Trio | St John's Smith Square 05/10/2023

Paddington Trio was named winners of our award back in April and the concert at St John's Smith Square is as a result of their win. We asked the trio how they felt when they found out they were 2023 winners of the The Parkhouse Award:

"We felt incredibly honoured, of course. But the thing about performing music that we love with people that we love is that it is deeply rewarding in itself. In those moments of peak performance, such as in our final performance in the Parkhouse Award, we were only focused on sharing that moment together with each other and with our audience of that day.

"Winning the competition, in the moment when the result was announced, felt like one of those incredible bonuses that you sometimes can get in life."

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Biography, Music, The Magic Flute, & Facts 04/10/2023

Second on the programme at Paddington Trio's concert on 24th October is Mozart's piano trio in G major K496. The trio said they selected it because they were surprised that it was one of the lesser played trios by Mozart and loved the music's sunny and bright mood.

They said it's lot of fun to perform and added: "Being Mozart, it is incredibly beautiful, simple and operatic! Sometimes as instrumentalists we need to remind ourselves what certain phrases might sound like in an opera instead of being occupied with how to play our instruments.
