Whether we pray daily or really struggle to pray regularly, it can be difficult to know how to speak to God. Even when we devote time to prayer, it can be even more difficult to avoid distractions and give our attention fully to the Lord.

God loves to speak to us, so much so that He even gives us instructions for how to pray. When the disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray, He teaches them a really simple formula (Luke 14: 1-4). If you're finding prayer to be a challenge, this is a really great way to reset.

Lord, you are a God who speaks. Teach us to pray!

“Joel's Bar is the reason why I have little fear to tell others about my faith! The week helped me to seek a deeper relationship with Christ while making wonderful, life-long friends in the process. The prayers and spiritual guidance I received helped me to understand where I am and where I desire to be, with Christ at the centre."

Another beautiful testimony of how the Lord worked during our time together at JB23! 🕊️

26/04/2023

“My first time at JB exceeded all of my expectations. I was very apprehensive about it, especially as I was going on my own. Although nervous, I was really hopeful about what the Lord would do in the time that I gave to him, and really felt that it was where I should be for the week. I felt really welcomed when I arrived and began to relax, although I was still aware of a hesitancy in my heart. I had seen people being prayed with, and saw how they were overcome with the Holy Spirit, but I didn’t feel like I could let God do the same for me.

Through conversations over the course of the week, I was encouraged to receive prayer ministry and the Lord touched my heart so tenderly in a way that I did not know he could. My heart softened and I experienced the depth of his love for me in a new way and, for the first time, realised that he sees, knows and loves every part of my heart. Jesus began to teach me that I don’t have to carry the weight of it all, but he wants to tend to and care for the ‘inner garden’ (thanks, Johannes!) where he dwells forever.

The experience of prayer ministry was completely new to me but it was so beautiful to have people who I knew I could trust to pray with me in moments of vulnerability and emotion. I am beyond grateful to the people who prayed for me and helped me to encounter God deep within my heart.

From that moment, my experience of Mass, worship and Adoration changed completely and I am now deeply aware of God’s presence with me in every moment, and how he delights in me as his daughter.

Joel’s Bar has given me a completely new understanding of what it looks like to actually live our faith and to call on and trust in God. The Lord has awoken a fire in me and although I don’t know what that will look like in the future, I am more confident that ever that he is guiding me on the path and I have nothing to fear because his heart is never closed to me.”

What a beautiful reminder of how God moved in our time together at Joel’s Bar 2023 ❤️‍🔥

“Prayer enlarges the heart until it is capable of containing God’s gift of himself” - St. Teresa of Calcutta.

Prayer is the absolute foundation of everything that we do at Joel’s Bar. Both during the retreat and the planning beforehand, prayer comes first.

We can't do anything in our own strength, so allowing God to guide and lead us in the planning and preperation for Joel’s Bar is vital.

Please do keep Joel’s Bar in your prayers as we get closer to the retreat!

“Trying to write a testimony of my first time at Joel's Bar, almost a year on, is tough. If my time at JB taught me anything, its that every minute on God's Earth is worth looking forward to. Therefore, rather than covering old content and looking back on that week, I thought I would reflect instead on how the next week of my life is likely to look.

Although I would love to say my week has changed massively, it hasn't. I will still work Monday to Friday, I will still play football, I will still go on a run, I will still spend time with my friends and family, I will still go to Church on Sunday, I will still have good days, and I will still have bad days. So on the face of it, nothing has changed. However, dig deep inside me and something drastic has changed.

When I work, I often stop, even just for 30 seconds, to pray for the morning or afternoon ahead. Before I play football, I pray that God blesses all those who I will play with and against. When I run, sprinkled into my running playlist will be a few of my favourite JB worship songs. When I spend time with my friends and family, I appreciate them in a way never used to. When I go to church, I pray with a connection to God that, although has always been there, is now so much easier to access. When I have good days, I am thankful to God for everything that He has given me. And when I have bad days, I no longer dwell on them because I know God's love for me is always there, and therefore bad days are never that bad.

Although, from an outsider looking in, Joel's Bar hasn't changed anything. From the bottom of my heart, I can honestly say, nothing has ever had as big an impact on my life as that week gave me. A firm connection with God, a renewed appreciation for sending His son down to earth to save us, a vocal connection with the Holy Spirit, I didn't even know was possible.

Therefore, I now look forward to the week ahead for the time I will spend with those on earth and for the time I get to spend with God.”
