An anxious person’s guide to volunteering: part 2
An anxious person’s guide to volunteering: part 2 - River Eden Fife It was a clear day, with only a couple of clouds meandering across the sky as I made my way through Cupar. I was sweating slightly before I had even arrived as I had my long-sleeved hoodie and hiking trousers on. It was important to wear them as ticks can be an issue when walking
River Eden Day was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the river that runs through the centre of Cupar and explore what the River Eden means to local people. Over 300 people came to the event. Everyone had a chance to experience different volunteer activities at the many stalls present on the day – Sustainable Cupar, Deer Centre, Eden Angling Association, Buglife Scotland, Lucky Ewe, National Farmers Union Scotland, Fife Coast and Countryside Trust, Woodland Trust, Bell Baxter, Elmwood College and RESP were all represented.

In Feb 2024, RESP was lucky to receive an award from the Scottish Government Nature Restoration Fund, managed by NatureScot. This funding is being used for a year-long development project to survey 190km of the River Eden and Motray Water. The surveys, which are well under way, will map the location and extent of Invasive Non Native Species (INNS) as well as highlight locations where habitat improvement could contribute to greater biodiversity, better water quality and climate resilience. The project includes funding to engage with landowners and the community to develop strategies for river restoration and citizen science.

RESP was set up by 4 main partners and some other River Eden enthusiasts to promote biodiversity and habitat improvement on our beautiful river. The partners are: Sustainable Cupar, Eden Angling Association, Fife Coast & Countryside Trust and St Andrews University. Now that we are up and running, we are working with a wide range of individuals and organisations, including local landowners and farmers, the NFU, SEPA and Scottish Water. As our work develops we are sure to welcome new partners to collaborate with us. You can find out more and get involved using the 'contact us' button on our website at www.riveredenfife.org
