Friends of Springwood Library, Oakwood, Derby
Managed by the library volunteers
Do you know someone who might benefit from the Home Library Service? Please do let them know about it if they are housebound due to ill-health, disability or infirmity.
There's a link in the comments to the online information.
Just to let you all know that the new printer is up and running!
Hi everyone! We are going to start a magazine swap system at Springwood Library. This is an initiative organised by the volunteers and is available to everyone; you don't need a library card to take part.
The plan is that people will be able to *drop* off between 1-3 recent magazines, *swap* 1-3 magazines for ones other people have left or *pop* 1-3 magazines in their bag even if they don't have any to swap at first.
We have a small stock of old magazines from the library which are no longer in the system since the libraries no longer stock magazines (except Which) so we will be using those to supplement the magazines that customers bring in at first.
We are hoping that this scheme will allow people to share and reuse magazines which might otherwise go straight to recycling. Obviously, magazines do need to be in good condition, and will be recycled when they get scruffy.
Please do stick to the 1-3 rule at least until we see if the scheme is useful to our community as we have limited space in the library for storage, and please bring in current magazines (2023-2024) in good quality to drop/swap! Please only take 1-3 magazines to give others a chance to take part :-)
The Summer Reading Challenge 2024 for children aged 4 - 11 (and preschoolers) is now on at the library!
This year's theme is 'Marvellous Makers' and is all about creativity from dancing to music and art. The aim of the challenge is to keep children encouraged in their reading throughout the summer holidays so that it doesn't dip while they are away from school. To take part, you will need a library card and you will be issued with a poster to record your books on and will receive stickers for every book you read. You need to complete 6 books over the summer holidays, or 10 if you are one of our many avid bookworms! If you complete the challenge, you will receive a certificate and a small reward - and more importantly, you will enjoy some great books during the holidays!
Please do pop into the library (you are welcome to join to take part in the challenge) and our friendly volunteers will help you get started!
Unfortunately our printer is out of order at the moment. We will be getting a replacement printer soon, but for now we are unable to offer printing.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience, but hopefully it will be resolved soon!
Could you be one of our great band of volunteers? We would love to welcome you to the team! We are especially looking for volunteers who can cover Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The afternoon shift runs from 1pm to 4pm. You would work with an experienced volunteer or council library employee, and full training is given at your own pace.
Its a great opportunity to be a part of the community, to meet people and to help people. Our library may be small but we have a lot of dedicated library users who would benefit from your help!
Do drop in to the library on any day we are open ( Tues, Weds, Thurs) and have a chat to the volunteers abou t what the job entails! We take volunteers of any age or ability from 18 upwards. Whether you'd like to learn something new or meet someone new, we'd love you to join us!
You can also apply online by emailing [email protected].
We've had a gardening diary put through the drop box along with some books, but we could not work out from the books whose it was as they were from multiple customers. We could nto find a name/contact details in the diary, but recognise that someone may want this back as it has lots of gardening info in it.
Is this yours? Do you know someone who has misplaced theirs? It is safe in the library ready to be collected!
If you would like to take advantage of this, you will need your library card number and the PIN number you have been issued with. If you want to borrow ebooks and audiobooks, you need to download the Borrowbox app on your smartphone/tablet. When you register it will ask you what your local library is and for the library card number and PIN number and then you can choose what you'd like to borrow. At the end of the borrowing period, if you have not renewed the book, it will automatically be removed from your device.
If you enjoy reading magazines. why not give the Libby app a try? You will need the same information to register, and this app gives you access to a wide range of magazines which you can download and read in the same way.
If you would like some help with these apps, do drop into our library when it is open and one of our friendly volunteers will help you!
Enjoy your reading!
Have you ordered a new library card for collection from Springwood Library, within Springwood Leisure Centre, in Oakwood? We have a fair number of cards awaiting collection!
You will have received an email stating a collection number. Pop along during opening hours and we will issue your card ππ
