—— Ground source heat pumps: Wimbledon

“...Cooking and dining are enjoyed within a light-filled double height space on the private northern side, facing a tall 17th-century boundary wall. An open stair leads from this family hub to the first-floor bedrooms. The southern volume of the building is occupied by a living room with fireplace on ground floor and a master bedroom suite above. The volume along the western boundary accommodates a study, a gym and a utility space on ground floor and three bedrooms above.

The home adopts a low-energy design approach with a highly insulated and airtight lightweight timber frame structure that was pre-manufactured off-site, a ground source heat pump with 120m deep piles, and a ventilation system with heat recovery.

Here’s how a ground source heat pump generally works:

→ Heat Exchange: The system consists of a series of pipes, typically filled with a heat transfer fluid, which are buried underground in either horizontal trenches or vertical boreholes. These pipes form a closed loop circuit.

→ Heat Absorption or Rejection: During the heating season, the fluid circulating through the underground pipes absorbs heat from the earth and carries it together into the building. In the cooling season, the process is reversed, the heat from the building is transferred to the cooler ground.

→ Heat Pump Mechanism: Within the building, a heat pump unit contains a compressor and a heat exchanger. The compressor increases the temperature of the heat absorbed from the ground to a level suitable for heating the building; when in cooling mode, the process is reversed, with heat being expelled from the building.”

—— G.01. Nordic Spirits Lab x Akvavit

“...Nordic Spirits Lab is a group of (yes, Nordic) specialists from both inside and outside of the alcoholic drinks industry. Exploring everything that relates to drinks and drinking, from social, commercial, and scientific dimension, The Nordic Spirits Lab collaborate and experiment, deconstructing things along the way and putting them back together in a new novel way. Entirely experimental, the brand admits, ‘sometimes we fail. Sometimes we succeed. But we always strive to discover something new.’

The sum of everything as of today has led to the launch of G.01, a gin with akvavit botanicals, and more is promised to come. Akvavit has made a comeback among mixologists, and being a true Nordic classic, it’s a liquor that takes great knowledge and careful craftsmanship to make. Sharing a lot of ingredients with gin, like coriander, angelica and lemon peel, it is the botanicals of caraway or dill that make everything taste fundamentally different. Given such similarities, akvavit is therefore the ideal companion to gin, upon which Nordic Spirits Lab’s G.01 is the perfect distilled hybrid of both.”

—— Warehouse conversion of Spanish beauty

“...A former Canary Island banana import warehouse which was bombarded during the Spanish Civil War, such a space is certainly abundant with character and awe. In combination of all the various 1990’s architectural elements, such an ancient structure with a rich history is certain to deliver when ever converted into a place of living.

By a combination of full respect given to the building’s former usage and the conversion of an existent vault rear facade to reveal an underground courtyard, everything about the home feels natural yet curious.”

—— The future of coastal living: Ocean Builders

“...Picture this: a sleek, circular structure resembling an oversized lollipop, gracefully bobbing three meters above the ocean’s surface. This is the SeaPod, boasting over 1,688 cubic feet of buoyant air-filled steel tubes that ensure stability in even the roughest seas. Inspired by the shape of airplane engines, this innovative design is the brainchild of Ocean Builders’ president and head of engineering, Rüdiger Koch.

However, the SeaPod is more than just a feat of engineering, it’s a vision for the future of coastal living. Equipped with over 150 smart technologies, controlled by a personalized smart ring, residents can tailor their environment to their exact preferences. From music playlists to lighting settings, the SeaPod puts control at your fingertips.”

—— Crafted body care. KANKAN’s innovation

“...Awakening to the sobering reality of plastic’s impact on our environment, the founders of KANKAN embarked on a journey to make meaningful changes within their own homes.

Central to their vision is the concept of the circular economy, a philosophy that seeks to eliminate waste from the supply chain. KANKAN’s innovative approach embodies this ethos, employing aluminum cans as refill vessels, thus addressing three crucial aspects of the circular system.

KANKAN endeavours to make the world a little brighter, one shower at a time.”

—— Inside The Semi-Insulative Zallinger Refuge Cabins

“...Designed by noa* (network of architecture), the renovation and expansion of the Zallinger Refuge at the Alpe di Siusi offers a new model of hospitality, serving the world a perfect example of responsible tourism in every way.

A historical and landscape recovery intervention found in a high mountain context, these beautiful nineteenth-century barns are reborn as mini-chalets and beings back all the charm of a traditional Alpine village. Featuring South Tyrolean tradition combined with comfort, quality of design and sustainability, such a ClimaHotel has been built with maximum environmental protection in every aspect of the construction.

Offering 24 rooms in mini-chalets and 13 rooms in a central guesthouse, the architect’s intention of this project was to re-introduce all the traditional structures and architecture of the South Tyrolean mountain local area, and re-invent it in a new modern way.”

—— Single use plastic and modest consumer goods

“...While sustainability and circular design remain the prominent buzz words of this developing century, the continuing imbalance of accommodating both the manufacture of modest, well-made consumer goods and the conservation of our natural resources is proving to be ever challenging.

Now, we might covert the idyllic, nomadic beauty of Bali laid out in oh’ so many Instagram squares and tourist blogs, but in reality, the dainty country has been overwhelmed by plastic waste, produced by tourism, single use packaging and unfortunate tidal pollution from the neighbouring islands.

Sungai Watch, established in 2020, exists to collect and recycle as much of this waste as possible through the use of floating barriers that harvest underwater debris throughout Bali’s rivers, halting it from entering the oceans.”

—— Instrmnt A-Series wall clock

“...There is something fundamentally awesome about simplicity, isn’t there? Wall clocks are hardly ever the hot-buzz topic of any conversation - unless, perhaps, you’re a wall clock designer - but these two products launched by the well-known wristwatch brand Instrmnt certainly pack a punch worthy of this discussion.

Free of any distracting detail, these dual aspect quartz clocks are perfect for any desk or wall, and if you’re fans of the minimalist, non-cluttered look like SATORI & SCOUT are, need you consider anything else for any timekeeping concern?”

—— The personal GITA droid

“...Droids are happening. Right now. Should we call it laziness in not carrying your own grocery home from the stores, or is that inventive efficiency? Taking the second as the main positive to draw from this, there are many things that can help to make life easier. The Internet Of Things is one that is really pushing the boundaries of mixing technology and lifestyle, and this new GITA Droid is arguably just another step in the transition the world is seeing right now.

The excellent looking Piaggio GITA Personal Cargo Droid does, SATORI & SCOUT shall suggest, sound more like a colleague of A2D2 and other Star Wars characters, but the rather simple robot is perhaps simply best described as a robotic personal helper that finds itself best tasked to carrying personal belongings.

Without suggesting that the robot aims to replace the trusty handbag that is centuries old, and the pouch that is even older, but such innovation has come from the brainchild of Vespa scooters and there certainly is merit in their design philosophy.”

—— Drop by Drop. Herb-powered home filtration

“...Home Filtration systems are becoming quite the artistic rage, and Royal College of Art graduate Pratik Ghosh has designed a system that puts all commercial water filtration containers to shame. Powered by herbs, the purification of kitchen waste water to become drinkable is really quite innovative and useful, despite its ‘quirkiness’.

Named ‘Drop by Drop’, the system is home to plants within a glass dome, where pipes enable an input of water to then be purified and finally, collected. Designed specifically for grey water - washing machines, sinks etc -, the system works by the plants photosynthesising and transpiring, where the water is drawn through the roots and onto their leaves to then evaporate as air vapour. With air flow controlled and a vacuum existing to expedite transpiration, water purification is as fast as nature allows.”

—— Inside The Somers Beach House, Australia

“...Titled Somers Beach House, this modern home residence occupies a prominent beach fronted property overlooking Westernport Bay with expansive views to Phillip Island and beyond to Bass Strait. The house sits on the steepest section of the site, with two generous levels acting independently of one another. It is designed as an inter-generational holiday house, with a focus on the upper level of the home being comfortable when occupied only by a retired couple.

Continuing the journey, a covered breezeway links both levels and provides access to the rear garden and beach, allowing guests to experience the surrounding landscape as they descend. Arriving at the beach, a striking timber-clad boat shed hovers among the dunes and acts as an extension of the main dwelling.“

With various independent brands and concepts, as well as multinational brands, dabbling themselves in the alcohol-free aisle for a short period of time now, here we highlight two that we think are worth a mention.

Spearheading this shift is Seedlip, a pioneer in the realm of non-alcoholic spirits, and Club Soda, a haven for those seeking an alcohol-free nightlife experience.”

The future is now, a home’s facade that activates any balcony into being either inside or outside, it’s your choice.

Here, this innovative movable glass facade system activates balconies with circular green floors and circular hard floors. The main element of the movable glass facade is the circular glass door module in which each module consists of two quarter circle glass doors.

These glass doors can move 360 degrees depending on the embedded rail systems on the ceiling and floor. Such movement provides several possibilities for the facade of the building.

By way of choice, the circular balcony can be transformed into an indoor or outdoor space in line with the needs of the user. Thus, the balconies will not be closed and turned into storage areas or idle areas as they are today, but will be associated with the street and the interior. Helping nature by offering a large green area on the balconies instead of just hard floors, the facade of the building will, in effect, turn into a living facade.

Awarded Honorable Mention at 2023.

Secluded in Menetes, Greece, three villas can be found upon a 23% site slope. Emerging from the landscape in a linear arrangement parallel to the sea view, the villas’s design respects the natural topography.

Placed amphitheatrically, the three villas have unobstructed views to the Aegean Sea while offering privacy and seclusion. Built partially underground, the geometry and materiality reflect the site’s original textures and the buildings blend with the rough context.

White, clean ribbons become retaining walls creating the only contrast between the artificial and the natural. With simple geometries and large openings, the stunning views are the focus of the place’s journey.
