The great thinker Barbara Marx Hubbard believed in the power of older women. For her, the end of our fertile years meant that instead of creating possibility for others, we become full of it for ourselves. She called it ‘regenopause’.

Apo Whang-Od - the new cover star of Vogue Philippines - looks soul-deep with this kind of positivity. You can see that peace and joy within her. It’s goes far beyond the superficial surface and shines like a light from within. It’s a beauty rooted in truth, integrity and inner peace.

Apo is a mambabatok, or traditional Kalinga tattooist, and has been imprinting the symbols of her tribe by hand for decades now. She’s thought to be the oldest person to appear on a Vogue cover and also one of their few cover stars to come from an Indigenous community. And she’s passed her wisdom on to her great nieces so that they can keep this art alive. Isn’t that the beauty of ageing? Sharing all the lessons you’ve learned with younger women.

I know it’s hard to resist the drive to having stuff done to your face as you get older. I get it. But look at Apo’s light. And joy. And youth. Even if her skin is lined, her soul is youthful.

She’s 106. Let’s all be a bit more Apo.

A bit of glamour for this 1930s Lloyd Loom bedroom chair. This client wanted to keep the chair (in its current painted form) as it was her late grandmothers but it needed to sit in a contemporary space and the brief was green velvet. Chelsea Regent Street and Villa Black Friday and cushions with trim in a vintage Liberty fringe.

Colour inspiration for this room was born from this client’s fabulous bedding. Up-cycled fitted wardrobes/cupboards hand painted in Oval Room Blue, with inserts in Thibaut-Venus-Wallpaper-Dark Turquoise. Just a few finishing touches and this room is complete.
