In the interest of keeping our much valued customers safe, we share the below from our own local team, however, Derbyshire Police advise this isn't just local to us, but across Derbyshire using different names, stations etc.

In short, Police will never contact you about your bank cards and accounts, nor will they ask for information about them, or collect them from you.

Please do share this information and make sure that elderly or vulnerable relatives, friends and neighbours are aware of this scam.

This week we have had an increase in residents reporting scam phonecalls, typically to elderly people, although it is not known how this is ascertained by the scammer. The scam caller has used both landline and mobile phone numbers and called from a withheld number each time.

The bulk of the reports mention that the scam caller purports to be a ‘ DC Matthew or Mark Riley 5742’ from the fraud unit and usually gives his station as ‘ Cotton lane’. There is no PC Matthew Riley, that collar number is not in use, and Cotton Lane Police Station is no longer in use, with Ascot Drive replacing it.

There are two scripts that the scam caller has used:
The scam caller will allege that the resident has had their credit card used at various shops by someone else, typically Asda Spondon. and that the Police need your bank details to verify your bank details as part of their investigations. The Scam caller will allege he is a fraud specialist.

The other tactic is to call and claim that they are investigating a bank being defrauded and that they suspect your bank account to be affected. The scam caller will ask you to withdraw several thousands pounds worth of money to check if they are counterfeit.

Fortunately, of the several calls we have had all have seen through the scam, either by the inaccuracies in the supposed Police officer or the sensitive nature of passing bank details to a stranger over the phone.

The concern is there may be further people affected by this scam who won't realise until it is too late. Please spread the message to friends and families who may be affected by this type of fraud to make them aware. The Police will never call you to ascertain your bank details. They would never call to ask you to withdraw any amount of money.

If in doubt about the legitimacy of a phonecall from the Police, the council, your bank or any other service, inform them that you will be ringing back to verify. You can find customer service numbers for every company online. In terms of The Police you can call 101 and confirm that the officer is legitimate, this can also be done for officers visiting your address who may be in plain clothes. Anyone that is genuine will not mind the inconvenience of waiting whilst you confirm.

Wow, what a weekend it was! ☀️

A huge, huge thank you to all who supported our charity weekend, helping to raise much needed funds for the amazing Umbrella Derby and Derbyshire. ☂

We sold all 3,000 raffle tickets. We achieved our best auction to date, our fabulous golfers had a great day.

Huge vote of thanks to all those who hosted fun and games stalls on Monday, all rounded off by the fabulous Raindrops choir!
