So by advertising the fact we will be stocking Blubells Ice cream ready for half term and the summer months we have completely jinxed the weather!
If it’s something wintery you’re looking for today then we’ve got what you need! Roaring log burners, delicious coffees and hot chocolates and the Soup of the Day is Leek and Potato!
There might be a few buckets dotted around the building to catch the leeks but it all adds to the charm of the 200year old building!🤦♀️

As we head into our hotter months we have made the decision to pause our offering of Sunday Roasts (we promise they’ll be back in September!).

Hackwood Farm - Our Story
Hackwood farm is located just 10 minutes by car from the centre of Derby in the village of Radbourne. Part of the Radbourne Estate, Hackwood Farm in its current form dates back some 200 years when it was a working dairy farm until the 1970’s.
Georgina and Neil Crofts moved to Hackwood Farm in 2010, when the farm was empty and awaiting a new lease of life. Their plan – to take out a 12-month tenancy to develop a farm shop and café. The first 12 months gave them enough time to prepare their own planning permission, research for the development and restore furniture, mainly found on eBay with the help of family and friends! They arrived at the farm with no experience in farming and even less in setting up and running a café; they hadn’t even worked in one! Neil worked as an environmental consultant and still does and Georgina an air hostess. Within the first few months the couple took on a herd of rare breed pigs, chickens, geese, sheep and Georgina opened a livery yard for local horse owners.
Despite their lack of experience, the concept was a clear one; to invest everything into local food from local suppliers and for the café to offer the absolute best it could in food, drinks and service. Toward the end of 2010 planning permission had been granted and the proposal was to convert a single story ‘U’ shaped former milking barn into a café with an adjoining farm shop. The building was in a poor state of repair and was in use for storage by the estate’s gamekeeper. The plans included the renovation of the building whilst retaining original features, such as the wooden beams and rustic barn doors you see today. Internal works also included providing toilets and a fully operational kitchen.
Hackwood Farm Shop and Café opened its doors on Friday 1st July 2011, the first day being busy and not slowing down since! In 2012 after several successful months Hackwood Farm opened its butchery and two years later the delicatessen. Each of the departments work together to bring you the award-winning Hackwood Farm you see today.
