You may have heard the expression "It's time to toast the happy couple." However an individual with autism may struggle to grasp the intended meaning of such figurative language. 🥂
To support with this phrase an alternative might be "let's raise our glasses to the happy couple." 💙
Changing certain expressions into more straightforward alternatives can make a significant difference.🙌

Existing EHCP's are in the process of being transferred to the online system.
Training and advice for parents/carers will be available and we will let you have details on how you can access that support in the coming months.

Can't figure out why your disabled child is upset? Ask yourself these questions to try to identify their behaviour triggers.
It can take time and practice to work out your child's triggers, but this is key to finding strategies to deal with them.
If a certain behaviour keeps happening, you may want to keep an ABC behaviour chart to help pinpoint and remove triggers.
👉 Learn more about ABC charts and how to create one in our Behaviour Guide: contact.org.uk/behaviour-guide
The trigger questions listed in this photo are also available to read in standard text format on page 18 of our guide.
👉 For more advice, visit contact.org.uk/behaviour
Do you have autism, or a learning disability, and want to improve your maths qualification?

Do you feel that your autistic child is accepted and understood in society? What's one thing you wish the general public had a better understanding or awareness of?
Autism Acceptance Week begins today and aims to raise awareness of the barriers and discrimination that autistic people can face.
In a mini poll, we asked families about their experiences of raising an autistic child. 94% said they don’t feel their child is accepted and understood when they’re out and about.
The top three things parents say people don’t understand are:
👨👦👦 Their child’s behaviour (things like not playing or following instructions in the same way (86% of families polled)
👩👧Their child having meltdowns and getting very distressed (79%)
👪 Or not being able to speak or communicate as others might expect (70%)
Lily, mum to five-year-old Olly, explains what life is like:
“Parents of disabled children are just like everyone else. We just want to take our kids out swimming or to the park.
"My son Olly is autistic and he does things all the time that someone might consider unusual or naughty. But those things are just sensory processing needs and they’re normal for an autistic child.”
