Despite Kurt’s best efforts to repel Schalk’s attacks this match shows that a reactive approach is not sufficient when it comes to chess or cyber security. A lack of strategy and coordination will ultimately lead to the inevitable outcome – whether on the chessboard or in the world of cyber security.

Drawing on our chess analogy, much like chess, cyber security is all about strategy. You may wonder what the "wall of pawns" has to do with cyber security. It's simple: much like the "wall of pawns" in chess, the firewall is the first line of defence in cyber security. The "wall of pawns" creates a solid barrier to protect valuable pieces behind it. Similarly, a well-configured firewall protects your company's valuable data from unauthorised access by malicious actors.

Firewalls, like pawns in chess, may not be the most glamorous components but are essential to the overall strategy. They filter out potential threats, prevent unauthorised access, and create a secure perimeter around the network.

Just as pawns are complemented by more powerful pieces, firewalls work as part of an overall system that should include intrusion detection (IDS) and intrusion prevention (IPS) systems, along with other tools, to provide a multi-layered defence against cyber threats.

However, simply installing a firewall isn't enough. Firewalls need to be configured correctly, monitored, and updated to be an effective part of your cyber security strategy.

📣 A recent wave of scam calls have been targeting businesses across the Isle of Man. Fraudsters are impersonating representatives from specific banking institutions, trying to obtain banking details, and gather employee information to access bank accounts.

REMEMBER: A legitimate bank will NEVER ask for remote access to your computer. If you receive a suspicious call, do not engage with the caller, follow their instructions, or share any sensitive information. Instead, end the call immediately, report the incident to your internal team, and contact your bank directly using the official phone number provided on their website or official documents.

Stay alert and safeguard your business against these threats!

Yesterday afternoon, Kurt Schrauwen and Schalk Rust led a webinar with CISI, exploring the dangers of cyber crime, attackers' methods, and strategies for individuals to act as the first line of defence against cyber crime. A big thank you to Nigel Sydenham for hosting the session.

With over 100 attendees, it was a valuable opportunity for Riela Cyber to raise awareness, answer questions, and engage in discussions on this important topic. If you missed the session, you can watch it on CISI TV!

🤸Earlier this week, embraced and the theme of 'Movement' by welcoming Janet from Shine Om Yoga to the office for some afternoon yoga and stretching. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to try something new and incorporate mindfulness into our day. Staff returned to their desks feeling rejuvenated, energised, and with a newfound passion for yoga (As you can tell by the photos)!
