Selsted Church of England Primary School
Selsted Church of England Primary School is a small, rural, church school situated between Folkestone and Canterbury.
We pride ourselves on seeing every child as an individual and having a nurturing approach at the core of everything we do.
Our Year 6 enjoyed their end of school treat to Chatham where they did tobogganing and tubing on the slopes. A fab time was had by all!
Today was the start of 'Health and Well-being week' kicked off with a day of sport. This morning the children competed in their houses to score points to take through to the afternoon. The afternoon involved all the track races. There was an atmosphere of healthy competition and support for each other. Thank you to the families that managed to join us during the afternoon. The afternoon was won by St Mary's with St Peter's being overall winners.
We also said goodbye to Mr Clarke today, who has been with us since September 2019. He has led on sport and been an inspiration for many of our children. We wish him lots of luck in the next chapter of his career.
What a great day we have had celebrating our end of term. We have one week to go but this was our final full week in our current classes. Parents and carers joined us for a celebration of achievement, progress, effort and school values.
Today, Denton Class had a fabulous trip to Wildwood. They observed the animals, completed a workshop around habitats, played in the park and slept on the bus coming back to school!
Wildwood staff and the general public commented on how well behaved they were and what lovely children we have ..... we agree!
Acorn Class had their last Forest School session today, they enjoyed having their lunch in the woods. They also ate marshmallows around the campfire, made rope people with paracord and explored the woods. Luna got to attend too and she had a great time!
During transition week in 2023, Denton were asked to write a letter to themselves. This morning they opened them. They were surprised at the progress they had made in their handwriting and that they had achieved the goals they set for themselves.
Yesterday, Acorns have had a great afternoon learning a new World Faith Story, the Sikh story of 'The Crow and the Pearl Necklace'. They made their own necklaces, drew their own crows and made Rangoli Patterns too. Their super afternoon was complete when they made delicious fruit kebabs in baking club. Yummy!
You can always rely on the Selsted School community! Despite the weather the summer fair was a huge success. Thank you to all those that helped set up, man stalls and tidy away. Thank you to those who joined us and spent their hard earned cash to raise funds for the school. A special thank you to FOSS and in particular Hannah T and Hannah W for all their support and hours of work.
Yesterday our children worked in their houses for the day designing products to sell at the Summer Fair today. Each group were given a budget of £10 to buy resources - which house will raise the most profit?
Come to the summer fair today and buy their goods!
Don’t forget our summer fair tomorrow from a 12pm
Bring the sunshine with you! 😂
Today at Forest School our Acorn Class enjoyed making faces from natural materials, listening to a story around the campfire, chilling in hammocks and on the swing and drawing with charcoal.
It's voting day at Selsted School!
The school hall is used as a polling station and we wanted to take the opportunity to teach the children the importance of democracy and the power of voting. We therefore voted for our new House Captains for September. Folkestone Council provided us with an official polling booth and voting box too!
Last night we sent a group of children to the District Sports Event. As a team they were placed an impressive 2nd place. Individual events received 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings too. Well done!
Wootton Class had a great day at Wingham Wildlife Park (despite the rain). This trip linked with the class topic 'Going wild' and wildlife conservation.
Swingfield Class had a trip to The Warren this morning linked to their Dimensions unit of work called 'Global Warning'. They looked at sea life and spotted for signs of ocean waste that has been produced by humans.
Yesterday Year 6 had beautiful weather for Forest School. They learnt social skills and friendship, developed physical skills, creativity and imagination. All of this was learnt through playing games, relaxing in hammocks and making bracelets (using the Nordic sling). They also ran down the hill as fast as they could! Fun!
Today Mrs Woodgate and Mrs Hills were surprised by having a birthday lunch in their honor! Both are celebrating 'big' birthdays this year. Mrs Hills' birthday is on Sunday and Mrs Woodgate actually has 6 months to go but because her birthday is on Christmas day she enjoys two celebrations a year - like the Queen!
Although she isn't very happy that she has lost the last 6 months of her 40s!!
Some of our Year 6 children have decided to brighten up the school by repainting the fence, gardening and tidying up....our children are great!
Today at Forest School, Acorn Class enjoyed a focus on minibeasts - they made minibeasts from sticks and leaves, searched for minibeasts and made bug hotels. A great time was had by all!
A great summer disco organised by our fabulous PTA (FOSS).
Have a great weekend everyone!
Acorn Class had a lot of fun today at Wingham Wildlife Park! They enjoyed seeing many animals including giraffes, chimpanzees, flamingos, meerkats, reptiles and nocturnal animals and they even saw dinosaurs! A trip to the play park and the gift shop, as well as lunch completed a fabulous trip. Something which was mirrored by many of them falling asleep in the minibus on the way back to school!
Today at Forest School, Acorn Class listened to 'Stanley's Stick' for inspiration for stick creations. They peeled carrots to practice whittling skills, did leaf rubbing and enjoyed the swing and free play in the woods.
A fabulous poem written in class today when discussing pollution:
If we’re going to stop this we need a fair resolution,
Let’s all make a big effort to stop air pollution.
With all the oil leaks we must stop them from dripping
What about the chemicals? The marine life are slipping!
What about all the plastics like nurdles
that are harming sea life, fishes and turtles?
How are we going to stop all the rubbish and litter
that’s making our planet die quicker and quicker?
What about garbage that we need to recycle,
that’s causing carnage and being very spiteful?
What about plants we need to protect
that’s giving them all a shrivelled up effect?
All the beautiful animals paws, tails and tentacles
being poisoned by fizzes, foams and chemicals.
By Freddie, Ralph, Perri and Seb (Swingfield Class)
Today our Acorn Class celebrated their Dads in preparation for Father's Day on Sunday. They sang a song, shared homemade gifts and cards and shared heartfelt messages. Happy Father's Day to all our special Selsted School Dads!
Our Year 5/6 mixed football team took part in a tournament today with a group of schools we regularly work with (St Eanswythe's, St Peter's, St Mary's, ChristChurch). They played really well and got to the final. They finished as runners-up. Well done team Selsted!
We love Friday morning 'Book Banter'. Our children share books with friends and older/younger pupils and there is an atmosphere of joy - reading for pleasure at its finest!
Our Year 1/2 children attended the Rapid Fire Cricket tournament yesterday. They played really well and came 1st! Well done Wootton Class!
