Resuscitation Council UK welcomes the Department for Education rollout announcement of all state schools being given a defibrillator this academic year.

Commenting on the announcement, Sue Hampshire, our Director of Clinical and Service Development, said:

“It’s great news that a defibrillator is being given to every state school without one during the current school year. Early CPR and defibrillation can more than double survival rates, this initiative will help to save lives, and anyone can use a defibrillator, they tell you exactly what to do.

The DfE programme will achieve even greater defibrillator coverage across England if they are placed on school gates and accessible to whole communities, rather than being locked inside schools.”

It is estimated that around 70,000 defibrillators are not registered in The Circuit.

The Circuit – the national defibrillator network, connects defibrillators to NHS ambulance services across the UK

If a defibrillator isn’t registered then emergency services don’t know it exists therefore it cannot be accessed quickly to save life.

Fantastic days work delivering RPE training to employees at MVV Dundee

Increasing the knowledge and understanding of the use of, and care and maintenance of RPE is so important in reducing occupational lung diseases.

We are delighted to have provided volunteers of Wellbank Village Hall with their Emergency First Aid at Work yesterday. Yes that’s right, yesterday was Sunday!

Here at Shield Scotland we don’t just deliver training Monday to Friday, we deliver training when the client needs it. We shape our training to meet the clients needs and requirements.

Face fit testing for tight fitting respiratory protective equipment is a mandatory requirement, in order to ensure the selected facepiece is adequate and suitable for the wearer.

Helping to protect individuals from developing occupational lung diseases by ensuring they wear tight fitting respirators that are not only adequate and suitable for the task, but actually fit the wearer 😷

One of the main issues for this particular industry is “baker’s lung” a form of occupational asthma which can occur when working with flour and can lead to other respiratory problems 🫁

Always happy to welcome another new client and a little lunchtime break in the sun was a wee bonus! ☀️

Stopped in by the Angus Grill + Larder on the way back from delivering first aid in Aberdeen and check out the piece of life saving equipment they have mounted on the wall outside!

Fantastic to see! And not only do they have one, but they have gone the extra mile to make it a public access defibrillator! Well done folks!

Thankfully William knew how to perform CPR whilst remaining calm and focused. Williams actions lead to saving Johns life.

Did you know on arrival of paramedics, they are more than likely going to tell you not to stop CPR, this is to allow them to do other life saving procedures.

First bus driver saves passenger in cardiac arrest on board busy Glasgow route John McCann, 62, says he's been giving a 'second chance at life' after he fell ill on the 57 route travelling from Pollokshaws to Glasgow.

Although Covid restriction are slowly being lifted, we understand that in some close contact situations like learning first aid in a group environment, many people may feel more comfortable with added measures to reduce any risks.

This is why, on a Shield Scotland training course we will continue to provide our learners with face coverings, hand sanitizer and gloves should they wish to use them.

Although when it comes to gloves we like everyone to wear them!!!!

Why?

Well would you treat a bleed or a burn in reality without gloves? Ideally not!!

So why would you train without gloves?

At Shield Scotland we are firm believers in training for reality, not just for the sake of training. Yes, your bandaging may look lovely and do the job it was designed for but have you passed on an infection to your casualty or vice versa.

As a first aider we always try to “prevent things getting worse” and giving your casualty a subsequent infection by not doing the basics isn’t what we are aiming for.

If you “train it” you are more likely to “do it” and if you train with us we can guarantee you leave our course doing it to the best of your ability.

Busy day today…….. started with an early morning visit to MVV Energie AG thanks to Mimi Mwasame (MCIPR) and Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce for arranging a business breakfast. Great bacon roll and a walk round the fantastic facility.

Then some admin during which time received an email from Scottish Youth Football Association awarding us with the status of a recognised SYFA first aid provider.

Then upto Longhaugh South Site, Dundee to Campion Homes where I carried out some face fit testing for Kilmac Ltd employees.

Very enjoyable and productive day indeed
